Why would anyone buy this when it's not even as powerful as current consoles? Didn't we do this over 10 years ago and it was a disastrous flop.

If people are happy with the Steam Deck, they'll be happy with a device that's 6x as powerful.
It's that simple.

Unlike current year consoles, it has games.

10 years ago Steam didn't have their own OS designed for their launcher and controllers for PCs were fucking terrible when it came to drivers.
Also the pandemic moved a lot of people over to Steam so this actually works really well for grabbing that audience.

wow 6x more powerful than a device targeting 800p 30fps on games from 2022. That'll be enough for a device everyone is pitching they are going to plug in to their 4K tvs.

CPU is better than current consoles' so it fanrastic or emulating, which shills will never mention is not an option on consoles
They'll probably pull some ASU fuckery with the 8GB VRAM like they did on the deck to boost performance on that
Also if you actually need more power you probably play new games, 99% of which are normalnigger trash

>it doesn't need to play the newest games
yeah and with that mindset you can see why this thing is going to flop for normies.
another niche product, cool. But it's literally nothing special.
It will cost more than 5 year old consoles and perform worse than them.
If you defend this, you are a retard.
Go ahead and spend $500-$700 to emulate 15 year old consoles.
It's that simple.

Power doesn't matter as much as you think, having games is what matters and Valve has successfully nurtured a platform where people buy shit that they may not even play via sales and has a discovery queue can keep you endlessly buying games.
You don't need performance for many games on Steam, it's really only the AAA titles which a lot of people are tired of already.

I will unless it's over $500
PS4 games are still often locked to 30fps and 1080p even on PS5 so I could easily run them at 60 and either 1440p or upscaled 4k which is an upgrade
Plus I'm tired of other PS player on multiplayer they're fucking teamkilling retards on Helldivers

My wife has never played video games

I can now buy this and plug it into the TV and have her try some games from my giant collection.

Yes, I could have built a custom PC for this, but then there's windows and shit in the way.

Anyone that sees this appeal will save up an extra $200-$300 and get a prebuilt that is an actual upgradeable desktop that fucking shits all over this thing in everything except for size.
No console kid is giving up their library of games for a system that performs worse than the console they already have, and costs more.

>Normies
But most normies on steam literally can't play the latest UE5 games. You can even check the hardware surveys yourself. Meme indie games sell millions of units while the latest AAA shit flops and dies. There are more people playing fucking age of empires 2 than the latest payday. It's crazy.

Meanwhile the most played games on steam should run fine on the box.

Same reasons people buy Apple products. Platform lock-in and brand loyalty. It'll be priced at 599 US dollars easily. It doesn't have to sell a lot to be successful, it's a niche product with a high margin that leads to downstream benefits (hooking users into the steam storefront)

why do you care its a new competitor to the market that desperately needs to get its balls kicked in out of stagnancy, Iam absolutely rooting for Valve here because nothing but good can come from their roasting of Microsoft from the market ripping all sense of control away from them as products that work become something of a thing to worry about again, the issue is that since its a PC in nature Physical versions of games suffer. Its quite the monkey paw paradox.

I don't see how this proves my statement wrong at all. Steam Deck was a massive success and people I know with them generally enjoy them, myself included.
Personally I think you are fundamentally using the Deck wrong if you are prioritizing AAA/more resource taxing games. I mainly use my Steam Deck for Halo MCC and Super Video Golf, both games run extremely well and I don't have to bring an ass-massive console with controllers and any other cable except my charger with me. Steam's curated a huge library over the years where realistically you have so much to play that isn't new that it's not really a bother.
And even so, if the power of a Steam Machine is roughly six times more than a Steam Deck... that's a lot of potential for performance anyways, even if I feel it doesn't need it.
>>725715798
I think you underestimate the form factor + SteamOS availability. I agree that console players aren't giving up their consoles if they are content with them, but otherwise I don't see how this isn't a totally viable alternative.
Keep in mind that I got my Steam Deck for free and can get the new Valve hardware for free through CS skin investing so idk if that changes my opinion compared to someone who had to spend their own actual money on a Steam Deck.

same as everything with steam, you pay for the convenience.

Theoretically, you don't need steam. you can just pirate any game you want, throw them on your desktop, and run them all in sandboxes so the tranny crackers and repackers don't get their crypto miners on your precious gaming laptop.
in this same way, you don't need to buy a prebuilt steam machine. you can just buy all the individual components, get scammed on ebay, spend 30 minutes watching a guide on how to put it all together, and troubleshoot for the next hour because you put one of the cables on backwards or something else equally frustrating.

Or:
you can spend 1000 on a steam machine that runs all your legally purchased steam games after logging in and downloading them.

>but piracy is better becau--
Yes. But it's not more convenient
>but steam's always online so--
With all the money you saved with piracy, you can afford a better internet connection.

yeah, we all know YOU have no life. but nobody cares, especially not the people building computers. You weren't fucking with steam in the first place and you were never going to. you're too busy pirating games, having no fun, and posting angry messages on an albanian trout farming website
