The tutorial mission had me thinking I was inside an asteroid in space that was being mined from the inside out. I still think that would have been way better than the start we got.

This is how the game should have been, but Bethesda just can't help but shoot their load right out the gate. It started with the Power Armor in F4, and in Starfield they literally trip over themselves to give you the cutter, a watch, a ship and a robot with zero build up. You don't earn anything, and you feel like the ship is just a necessary component for the game to work when it isn't.
You can AND SHOULD absolutely get marooned on a planet without a ship and have to work your way out. You should earn cash to buy a ship. If the game was built with this in mind, the main cities would be chock full of more interesting missions because they'd know you'd be sticking around to do them. Instead, Neon has a mission where you talk to a bunch of shop keepers about joining a union or something? In a city of corruption and drugs? Someone wasn't giving a shit when they wrote it because they thought no one would be doing it anyway.

I can write, but I can't mod. Otherwise I'd make a Alternate Start mod that implemented starting cities, along with some missions and factions in those places that make them each feel like a real place you could and should spend time in.

After installing the fuel mod, this has been a real thing for me and its amazing. Forced to go explore a pirate camp because they might have fuel. Discovering things along the way. Its the classic Bethesda formula that they themselves don't seem to be aware of.
The mod that adds a shuttle service also is a must for that early game. You're limited in destinations, so you're free, but there's still something to work towards.
Every time I play, I work my way out of neon by doing gang shit, stealing, etc, get money, buy ship, move to Cydonia, then Akila, then maybe Jemison. But I try to spend as much time planet-side as possible, and in one place.
It would have been a delicate balance, but the game should have more things limiting your freedom as much as enabling it. You should want to stay in these places because there are fun things to do there.
The Ebbside Is Dangerous mod adds these caches to the outside of Neon guarded by gangs that you can raid and its a blast. Every city should have something like this. Like Akila having some kind of deterent to the Ashta - beacons around the city that emits a signal they don't like, that randomly go out and need fixing, forcing you to brave the Ashta to fix it and get paid

I do want to install the real fuel but it's not recommend it to uninstall it mid playthrough and my saves are a clusterfuck

It's great. Introduced tons of gameplay content that honestly puts Shattered Space to shame. Story's okay, acting is good. The only bad aspect about it is that sometimes when Watchtower enemies ambush you in space, they can arrive in incredibly large numbers which might cause you some trouble if your ship is not up to snuff, though that's probably to make up for you having multiple ships in your fleet which can render space battles easy.

The DLC's neat but MAN it's weird to be so heavily focused on one place. Really fucking with my normal Starfield pattern of doing made quests and then working in fucking around. ALSO must bitch about the concealment skill advancement challenge being melee sneak attacks when there are clearly bonuses in there for ranged sneak attacks too so why not just make it regular sneak attacks you bastards now I have to stomp off into the underbrush with a machete on some alien world that has never seen mankind before and has no fight or flight response and come back to the ship hours later covered in gore and muttering about leveling up

The gacha part of the strike is a hilarious trainwreck. I would have loved some unique ship parts (and interiors) for House Va'ruun.

Would also have been nice to have different interiors for HopeTec/Taiyo and Deimos/Stroud.

Make HopeTec look more industrial, Taiyo look more like iPhone interiors, Deimos be pure military, Stroud look like 80's luxury car interiors.

Though now I'm remembering that Stroud sidequest to help npcs 'design' the next Stroud ship. Wanted to suggest a basic design and have all the other suggestions be implemented as 'upgrade packages'. Instead have to choose the minimalist or extremely expensive jack of all trades ships to finish the quest.

Oh and I still wish for a sensor or survey module for ships.

The game needs a codex. Too many species, resources, factions, etc. and there's hardly anything about them. Ship modules need to mean something, like a med bay reducing injury recovery time, a science lab giving some sort of survey boost. A lot of the game needs fleshing out or a full rewrite, most places just lack pizzazz, not just Neon (but especially Neon). More variation, there's too few factions, armors, clothes, points of interest, it all comes together to make the game feel worse. NPCs look the same, planets look the same with the same facility with the same spacers.
