>>526969781Rest your balls on a grid based map and apply a toffee hammer with varied force on a timer.
It will probably be more fun.
Are there any 2D gridded games with turn based combat that aren't considered roguelikes?
>>526985669Those are just traditional turn based RPGs like the Avernum series
>save load system>non random world
>>526985796Oh right, I forgot. The kick in the balls after you die is a mandatory part of being a roguelike.
>>526986412It's both, the world being random and there being a save load system means you cannot bring prior knowledge to your subsequent run either.
I mean random + permadeath is the combo that defines roguelike and roguelite
Another counter example is ironman runs in say, Baldur's Gate or Pillars of Eternity. There is a single save file which is deleted if you die but the world is deterministic. This means that the "meta" for these kinds of run is to do really degenerate things like sneaking around, getting quest rewards before engaging in any actual fight.
>>526985669tactics games like Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, and X-COM
>>526992956except your cock.
your cock is asian.
>>526997143It's a knot thoughbeit
>>526988061Isn't that sort of the meta for some RL?
>>527004901If you stealth around in an randomly generated area, you are taking in a lot of risk which is part of the game. If the level is deterministic then it's different, you always know what the reward is so you might not even undertake the same sort of risk.

she died shortly after...
>>526988061I think CDDA would be better without permadeath but instead a punishing save system
>>527021650That's how it already is for the most part.
Dying is impossible after the early game due to insistence on "fair" combat. Anything that could pose an unexpected threat to unprepared survivors gets removed and this has been going on for a long time. 120mm tank drones, flaming eyes' dangerous abilities, nuckalavees.
Therefore meaningful permadeath does not exist.
And when it comes to the save system, it's punishing due to technical issues.
Autosave is too slow to keep on, that would break the gameplay flow. So you might forget to save for a long time and then the game crashes. And there is always a tiny risk of save corruption, especially when dealing with old data.

Don't rest for health, food is actually scarce and only eat when you're starving and have about half health or so
SPD is one of those games where you want to save your scrolls of upgrades for the late game gear, if not you'll feel the pain when you start encountering dwarves. You can use 2-3 of them to help with exploding skeletons or such but the rest should go to the endgame gear
Learn its surprise attack system and pillar dance
Enemies in ranged are very dangereous so you want to either los them, cc them or one shoot them, even as a hunter or mage

Cataclysm - The Last Generation
From the anon who posted the link
Ignoring the community/dev interactions, which cata fork has the most fun kind of autism, fuck gameplay balance restrictions, give me believable/consistent values for everything.
Cataclysm fork that's based on a 10 year old build of CDDA that will get developed for a year by two guys before getting abandoned with grand total of 3 new features but will otherwise play exactly the same as decade old CDDA. You may call it shitty and barren but i call it Cataclysm Dim Dawns - The Generation Z
>>527263023>Cataclysm Dim Dawns - The Generation ZKino name, make a fork based on it right now
>>527262562CDDA has cool locations and new items and better UI/QoL but OCdonutsteel cyborg robot faction and realism autism anti QoL sometimes
BN has less of everything, both good and bad and you can make flying machines. Z-levels are also better(?) but it has a lot of unfinished content and remnants of CDDA developement like quests that are just broken because they were unfinished when BN forked off CDDA
Last Generation is still too new and lackluster

>>527238394for butthurt? here
>>527266424>CDDA>better UITLG was literally started because DDA UI sucks.
It's in a really awkward place where half the UI is good old asskey but the other half has been haphazardly moved to imgui.
Some monospaced elements look like shit because they are rendered in a proportional font, some UI elements don't have line breaking so you can't even read the overflowing text that doesn't fit its box, some old UI elements have buggy imgui-like behavior and may render partially offscreen, etc.
The move to imgui is going to take a long time before the UI is back to at least as usable as it was. Not gonna be finished for 0.I. Maybe 0.J in a few years.
>>527274189>without being trivial like bnHa.

>>527275773i meant to quote the anon complaining about the discord
>>527275872I believe so.
Some old asskey textboxes occasionally get overdrawn so they don't fit the screen. Happens with the item action menu for example.
The same UI elements never had any issues before the imgui migration started.
>>527271252It's the opposite of casualization, they design the game around tournaments and streamline everything that gets in the way making it worse for 99% of players.

took another 2 weeks moving stuff to lua but I can start working on content now (for real this time)
Here is the most basic output ... generate a starter area with an NPC who tells you to go to a town to the north, then there's a town to the north. Some random areas around.
How do I make a roguelike with zero coding knowledge
>>527285626what if you don't talk to the NPC and go north
is the town real or you imagining it into existence?
>>527287757That's actually a possible direction the game could take, where areas aren't generated until certain events take place. Not gonna do it in this game though.
Nu-DCSS shapeshifter is literally the dancer class. Idk why they didn't put these mechanics into a new class and call it the dancer because the entire gimmick is that the size of your melee hits doesn't matter, only the fact that you attacked to proc the ability. You get magic effects when you move and when you attack, so you're pigeonholed into Wu Jian Council because 2/3 of your level 2 forms require it, even though Okawaru would be better in most late game forms. You can train with a weapon but 2/3 of your level 2 forms will waste all your weapon training. You can find great armor but 2/3 of your level 2 forms will waste all your good armor drops. But also you need to still collect good armor pieces for later forms and because your flux talisman is mandatory for unfucking your resistances if your current form is weak to an enemy. Then your inventory ends up crammed full of more items and rings than any other class because you need different things for different forms, and you have to get dressed for the fucking prom before you go into every new area.
Shapeshifter is now the Ballroom Dancer class. There, I figured it out. That's the class fantasy they were going for with Shapeshifter.
>>527281491Give an example of a feature that was removed that made it worse

>>527378731Verity? Horse?
To win at roguelikes one must first degrade themselves. Imagine oneself as a dog in some old Soviet lab salivating at the idea of winning at a roguelike, only to die over and over for months until a win is achieved. At which point, you are allowed to scream out loud "PAVLOV, BRING IN THE TODDLERS" because you need nutrients, you need red meat to for neural connections and finish conditioning yourself. Only to wake up and to die again and again tomorrow.
Do I need to cut my dick off to be good at and enjoy roguelikes or is that more of a result.

>>527420156Every ruin you find is automatically recorded in your journal. You can put a marker on it so it always shows on the map and/or make a custom entry with a note if it's something you want to come back to.
As for whether or not it's worth it - it's completely random. Some ruins can have tons of books or even randomly generated artifacts, some only have a single chest with two copper nuggets or some shit. Historic sites are always worth it though.

CDDA has a funny item duplication bug
- There is a 18L cement sack that counts a book as it has the recipe for mortar
- You can scan books into electronic devices
- E-books can only be read, their other properties are retained but unusable
- You can easily make copies of your e-books
- You can tell a follower to read a specific e-book which removes the e-book pseudoitem from the device and adds the physical item to their inventory

How important are full resistances for extended in DCSS 0.13? I have a Minotaur of TSO that could get almost full elemental resistance if I hold out for gold dragon armor, but I am tempted to get moving with a storm dragon armor due to no other source of relec. Additionally, how valuable would it be to tap into some spells? I have 16 throwing and invo, I am tempted to just max out armor and invo first but I have found books for haste and controlled teleport. It seems like abyss is pretty scummable at this point and if Pan is anything like nuDCSS I could probably farm exp for those there. So far I like this version more than trunk but the dungeon is too long, I can tab through most things but a spellcaster or skald would probably be a slog in this one.

The problem with this shitty general is /vg/ moves too fast so people need to bump. That said, the autists who inhabit this general are extremely unhelpful and just say inane shit, so this is largely a containment
>>527861707Tinkers are just that good. Having an actually good shop also helps.
There are only two problematic areas in Ember's midgame: the desert and the bug cave. If you manage to go through them, the later game is just a cakewalk with an occasional difficulty flashbang (like fighting the paladin waifu).
>>527889039The Paladin boss is just awful, so many runs where I just have to skip her and clear other contents first (even part of the final dungeon) because melee classes vs an enemy that spams AOE silence + continuous damage is stupid.
Still has to clear her since she unlocks a later event for a good ring drop though.
>>527889403Ring of Lost Love is nuts, if you kill John you get +6 CUN and DEX. (oh wow its what gunslinger uses), +10% all damage, and +10% all resistance. It feels almost mandatory.
>>527889039Yeah the radiant horrors in the desert were a bit of a problem. I also think a lot of the reason its easier is due to it being much shorter. Much less likely you encounter a rare or a boss that perfectly counters you and much less likely you make a game ending mistake because the game is shorter.

I have played a little tiny bit of DCSS in the past.
>>527902115Between the two, play PoA. DCSS team keeps removing content and making the game worse, and if you must play DCSS, try bcrawl. Also PoA is probably the easiest traditional roguelike, so you can actually win the base difficulty within a reasonable amount of tries. Also try Golden Krone Hotel, its also easy and beginner friendly.

Time for some Deck bcrawl
>>528035185Sometimes you get tired of dying in rift wizard and you want something with deep character customization but much easier, and in this case the easier comes from the fact that the combat itself is very simple.
>>528034621>any general beginner tips? The combat log is your friend. Open it and search through it during combat to check how often you are triggering your effects.
I also generally recommend focusing on one or two gimmicks. If you're an attack build then focus on making those attacks better or triggering effects off those attacks. If you're a summon build then just make those summons stronger or find effects that your summons can activate. Don't spread yourself too thin.
>>528034621Also you get your prestige class at 25 skill points spent in any two schools. That takes a long time on cycle 1, but on higher cycles you get your prestige class instantly. If you spend points in 3 schools randomly you won't get your prestige class for a long time.
>>528034621Going for pyrokinesis/pyromancy/flame healing will get you quite far.

>>528052343I still haven't tried cause I figured it's too dangerous And didn't want to die in the desert lol
>>528052290Yes there are Z levels. They were testing a burrowing claws mutation that could dig down anywhere without needing to find a staircase, but I dunno if that is going into the game. I think the main branch of the game still requires a mid/late game item called a spiral borer to make your own staircases.
It kind of trivializes a lot of dungeons if you dig into them from the side, so I can see why they might not want a level 1 mutation to allow that. You can already do it by going underground somewhere else and calculating how many zones over to dig to get to the quest dungeon, but it's a pretty niche technique.

Does anyone have recommendations for roguelikes that are more "tactical" like Cataclysm/Infra Arcana
Games where you don't just mash O to zoom around the floor before tabbing a conga line of enemies in a one tile hallway
Destructible environments, stealth, traps, tools that aren't fucking unidentified scrolls, immersive elements are a plus
>>528057278If you want stealth in a traditional roguelike look no further than Shadowed: The Demon Castle of Ooe. Big stealth focus (you get bonus xp for sneaking by dudes instead of killing them but you get items for killing them), a large focus on consumable items and optimizing every move (fatigue system means you canโt make careless moves), and you need to prepare your items ahead of time before using them and you have a limited number of preparation slots dependent on your class.

>>528136674SHAPESHIFTING REWORK IS A BIG FUCKING SHIT ON MY PLATE
>>528124063The implications are horrible if it isn't.
>>528124448I absolutely cannot stand the art style and unfortunately for that reason I won't play it. it's just too jank
You guys ever notice that there are shapeshifter enemies in DCSS? The mages who used to use transmutation magic before it got removed? Well the devs didn't notice them. At least not the devs who made the shapeshifting rework, because they forgot to rework the shapeshifter enemies. Just oops, our universe isn't logically consistent anymore. We made the players shapeshift with talismans that take 5 turns to shapeshift, but these enemies? Nah, they do something else that's not shapeshifting I guess. Just handwave it as an innate ability instead of making the shapeshifter enemies follow the same rules. Don't make them stand still for 5 turns to transform, and DEFINITELY don't make them drop talismans. Noooo, that would be way too nice if the player could kill an enemy and pick up his weapon like every other fucking weapon in the game.
And while we're at it, why are talismans so fucking goofy if they're supposed to be the shapeshifter's equivalent to a weapon? Sure we have shit like Glaive of the Prune that you'll find 1 in 1000 runs. But every run you're going to drop some talisman that turns you into a tea kettle or a beehive. Did the new devs not understand that the weird shit in DCSS is RARE because it comes from the fucked up mind of some powerful but demented wizard? It's not like you find evil artifacts just laying around on the ground in the world of DCSS, but now you do because SUPER SPECIAL SNOWFLAKE DEV wanted to add their special twist to the new versions by putting wacky jank into the starting item list of their rework. It screams of a vanity project from a dev that just cares about attention, not the quality of the game. The talismans are the equivalent of the minotaur's axe, but you pick up a talisman and it doesn't just say 7 damage, -1 acc. No, it has to have four paragraphs explaining how this special talisman gives you 15% bonus HP, bonus ice magic, ice breathing, weakness to fire magic, and crippling agorophobia (including wooded areas).
And why the fuck are half the new forms basically yelling "PLEASE PICK ME NON-SHAPESHIFTER PLAYERS!" The only reason a minotaur or troll is picking up a form is because they're grinding your DOGSHIT INFINITE EXP ZONES that shouldn't exist in the first place, and the fact the devs are encouraging this behavior by dedicating half the shapeshifting rework to them is ridiculous.
Who the fuck even asked for negative resistances on all the new forms? You invented a problem with the 5 second shapeshifting time, then invented a situation where that problem could FUCK YOU by putting negative resistances on the forms, and then invented a solution in the form of baubles that take you out of the form, and then YOU DIDN'T EVEN FIX THE FUCKING UI FOR PUTTING ON THE ARMOR THAT I NEED ON MY SHAPESHIFTER NOW. I literally have to take my form off and then put my armor on and then shapeshift again and meld that armor because your stupid fucking UI won't let me put the armor on as a melded piece, and I have to do this whole process gearing up my melded slots because you have now made it mandatory to have armor for my bauble form, and IT ALL CLOGS UP MY INVENTORY TOO BECAUSE I HAVE TALISMANS AND ARMOR on top of all the usual shit clogging up my inventory, and for some stupid reason you're inventing dumb fucking systems that require more and more item slots in a game that still has 52 max inventory slots as a limitation of the 26 upper and lowercase letters on a keyboard.
>>528141816>is that a flaw in the current scientific model of the universe? aiiiiieeeee save me niggerman I'm going insaaaaane
>>528124063Videogame PRNG is completely deterministic as well, you are autismoing about the wrong thing.
You know what is especially dumb about this new shapeshifting rework that supposedly attempts to give the player more freedom to play their shapeshifter in different ways, like giving you forms with or without armor? They completely fucked the freedom to pick other gods, so the class is more pigeonholed than ever. Why the fuck would you ever pick any god other than Wu Jian when 2/3 of your protean talisman forms become a thousand times better with Wu Jian's ability to move and attack at the same time? This should have been the obvious implication of a form that rewards you for the action of initiating an attack, no matter how strong that attack is, but for some stupid reason the devs did not think like hey, maybe the shapeshifters want to play Chei? Maybe they picked Naga like we suggested on the starting screen? No, we must adhere to this rigid dogma of making every new feature added to the game since 0.28 depend on your positioning. You will walk to activate all your abilities, and you will like it. Fuck you if you want to play Naga. It's already a terrible race so we'll ignore that we're nerfing the shit out of one of its recommended starting classes and justify it as "Naga is a challenge race."
>>528124245who even cares about this shit enough to do something about it, why would you ever need to resort to cannibalism at all when you get enough meat to last half a year from a single cow and there are farm fields with infinite corn an wheat everywhere. literally the only reason to ever engage with cannibalism in the first place was for morale and even that is such a tiny benefit is basically worthless.

>>528147103The most annoying things it can do is debuff speed and disable crafting. The latter makes negative morale traits pretty much unusable simply because of the annoying pointless maintenance they add to the game.

>>528149226Classes traditionally don't intrude on your character's mind. >>528149971After you run around a lot in CDDA your character feels tired. Is that also bad that the game tells you how your character feels? >>528150390Muscles having exertion limits and giving a signal as to such is a simple biological reality that takes an extreme physical abnormality to alter, an adult man choosing not to be an emotionally volatile pussy, on the other hand, is not. >>528152419>>528153826The stat is called divine intervention and getting some fucking vigor. But specially oneshotting everything as soon as you enter.
Somethings that are a huge fucking deal in PoAchra but the game never explains
1. If you don't have space, you do >*NOT*< trigger on summon, if there is 10 spaces and you summon 16 guys, you will only trigger 10 on summons
2. Enemy scaling is MUCH higher than your own, manfighting enemies without any powers isn't a possibility at C10+
3. Summons scale much worse than you do in stats
Because of those factoids, the best summoner builds aim to trigger 2 things, on summon and on kill/death, you want to enter a loop of summoning guys and killing them, an easy thing to do is Koszmar, Blood Cult, A heal (Life cult or Eresh) and a way to scale those triggers and kill your own dudes. The loop is that on summon triggers self damage (blood cult) which triggers Koszmar's psy nuke and lifecult stops you from dying.
Another way to get a shitton of triggers and scaling is stuff like Archmage+cadaver chant+star cult.
If you want to make a full on summoner build where your guys actually fight, or pretend to at least, you might want to look into summoner oozemancer (and likely the pantsless race+'on standstill triggers game turn').

Is there a Cataclysm save maintenance guide somewhere?
The game generates way too many overmaps - 6 in every direction. For old saves, every major mapgen update also requires you to move 6 overmaps in a given direction to get new terrain. All the while generating 6 maps in directions you'll likely never visit.
If I understand correctly, the 180x180 overmaps are saved in "o.x.y" files. For example the overmap coordinates x 6, y -7 would be o.6.-7. The overmap vision files follow a similar pattern, "characterid.seen.x.y"
But how do the overmap coordinates correlate to the directories and files under /maps/?
And what is the function of the .mmr files in /characterid.mm1/ directory? Is this map memory? The numbering is different from the directories in /maps/.
The debug menu's overmap editor's already-generated map highlighting tool is invaluable but it doesn't help explain how the map coordinates are correlated to overmap coordinates.
the line between gameplay features and unnecessary realism is thin and CDDA just about nukes that line.
imagine, if you will a turn based roguelike with primary combat being ranged.
now, will it be fun if there were realistic gun mechanics?
e.g.
if you use a pump action shotgun you need to press an item action (let's say it's space button) (this adds one turn delay between shots)
if you use a bolt action rifle you need to press the item action button once for each bolt movement (this way, you need at least 3+ turns to reload if it's single shot)
and should there be magazines? honestly, after playing both CDDA and BN I can say that it's just tedium DESPITE adding a new gameplay mechanic of managing your mags
so I'm trying to decide which way to go
I can go plain and simple, no magazines, R to reload, F to shoot
I can add special behaviors for guns like bolt actions, lever actions, pump actions, chambering mechanics (having to cock self-loading weapons...)
I can add magazines..
this is mostly just discussion because I'll definitely do the easiest way for now but eventually I'll improve the system
>>528255692Synthetik does reloading right?
Well, they are an action roguelite or something but still.
>>528256808it's a question of how many layers of complexity I want to add
some games don't even have reloading (e.g. guns feed from ammo directly)
1. reloading (gun contains ammo)
2. magazines (gun contains magazine, magazine contains ammo, no magazine = no shooting unless you allow insertion of one in the chamber directly)
3. whatever this step is. chamber mechanics (having to cock guns) and all that entails for all types of guns.
all of these steps add a level of complexity and turn requirements in combat
>>528255692DDA style mags+pockets that allows you to build your personal loadout is great fun *IF* it's balanced just right.
But DDA makes it too easy to become so powerful that you can just carry a gun with big drum mag and a bunch of loose rounds in fast pockets, which isn't much different than having no mag system at all. Larger mags should be more prone to causing feed malfunctions and messing up the gun's balance should also be reflected in its stats. And reloading mags should be slower and give you a stacking debuff like sore fingers so it's not a good idea to continuously do it mid-combat.
>>528259118>DDA style mags+pockets that allows you to build your personal loadout is great fun *IF* it's balanced just right.not a fun of pockets.. uh..
pockets are a pain in the ass to manage with keyboard only controls
maybe x-com (ufo defense ofc) like pockets?
so your character has fixed slots that are available once you wear the right clothing?
e.g.
backpack container available once you wear a backpack, takes 3 turns to put in / take out
leg and forearm slots, belt slot..
idk idk, it's all so complex
>And reloading mags should be slower and give you a stacking debuff like sore fingers so it's not a good idea to continuously do it mid-combat.that's a really good idea, noting this down
though doing it mid combat should be deadly as is (if it takes a lot of turns of course, if it takes 1 turn then uh ok)
>>528259484>pockets are a pain in the ass to manage with keyboard only controlsThey can be nice when you configure them to your liking and everything automatically works just the way you want.
DDA isn't quite there yet, because it only respects pocket settings in your inventory. When sorting stuff into vehicle storage (whether through zones or manually dropping) any pockets and their settings in the storage are ignored, you just dump everything into the root container.
>maybe x-com (ufo defense ofc) like pockets?I play a lot of OXCE and managing inventory is always tedious, because you can't automate it as well as in DDA. You can set a limited number of loadout presets but there's always more micro moving items around unless all your units are ultra generic and boring.
>>528259118>And reloading mags should be slower and give you a stacking debuff like sore fingers so it's not a good idea to continuously do it mid-combat.this is stupid as hell. it should just be way slower to load ammo into mags than loading mags into guns, since you know that's the entire reason magazines exist. taking out an empty mag from your rifle and stuffing it full of loose rounds from your pocket takes what, 100x as long as swapping a mag or worse?
You would have to load hundreds of mags for finger soreness to become a meaningful issue especially if you were neck deep in combat juiced on adrenaline, and finger soreness as a problem at all is completely negated by the existence of stripper clips which are also in game and make the 'reloading a huge drum mag mid combat' thing even faster and better.
>>528255692You're confusing realism with micro-management. Having different keys for different things is no more about realism than having separate keys for moving your left and right legs when moving.
Use reality to inspire interesting gameplay (different guns work differently so weapon selection is relevant and interesting) and to help convey things to the player (bitches know shit falls to the ground, so that's where dropped things should end up).
Are these ammo mechanics actually likely to add interesting gameplay or just tedium?
>>528261060>taking out an empty mag from your rifle and stuffing it full of loose rounds from your pocket takes what, 100x as long as swapping a mag or worse?IRL that is, the problem is that in game you can load mags way faster than you can IRL meaning the purpose of magazines at all as a firearm component is lost.
>>528261076>Are these ammo mechanics actually likely to add interesting gameplay or just tedium?that's what I'm trying to figure out

Roguelikes where I can sabotage military airplanes?
>>528264410I think a simplified version of pockets would be good. e.g. holsters for handguns, pouches for grenades, belt loops for long tools etc. that have benefits over generic storage.
The cataclysm system where they autistically model every little thing like individual pockets on a pair of jeans or separators in a backpack that serve no purpose to gameplay is cancer.
They should just break items down into things that can be stored in anything like pills, small tools etc. things that can only be stored in some kind of backpack like long tools crowbars hammers etc. and then dedicated storage gear like the holsters and slings I mentioned. And also containers for liquids like the game already has.
That alone would approximate the entire autistic pocket system in cataclysm except with way, way less micromanaging and tedium.
>>528269549>I think a simplified version of pockets would be good. e.g. holsters for handguns, pouches for grenades, belt loops for long tools etc. that have benefits over generic storage.you're basically describing BN already lol
>>528269745never tried it, sounds like something it would have based on what I know of it. I would try it but I don't know if I can be assed to go through the learning curve of a game like cataclysm again.
>>528269549>>528269745it's funny too how something that the cataclysm pocket system should logically allow you to do that would actually be good you can't do, that being specify exactly what and how much of something you want to put in a container. For example take a plastic bag and set through the pocket menu for it to store 20 of every kind of pill you want to have, but of course you can't to that. So to make that kind of self-regulating storage of small items you have to painstakingly find containers and nested combinations of containers that will store the amount of shit you want to store without excess and set the conditions for every fucking pocket.
In my current game I have a ballon containing a glass seasoning bottle, a cigarette pack, a pillbox and another balloon because that was the combination of containers I had on hand that could store medical supplies in sane quantities without me having to micromanage it every time I loot shit.
>>528269843>never tried it, sounds like something it would have based on what I know of it. I would try it but I don't know if I can be assed to go through the learning curve of a game like cataclysm again.it's not really different from cataclysm
it's literally old cataclysm from way before they added pockets and colored condoms
>>528264410it's really not a problem once you get past the newbie stage and learn how it works, 5 minutes of menuing (tops) and then you get the benefits of having organized containers and gear sets for different situations that you can pull out of your car when you need it
>>528270283is it still regularly updated? I remember the last time I looked at it it didn't have the powergrid system dda has and that's why I lost interest.
>>528270297The problem with pockets isn't learning how it works, it's that it's still shit even when you know how it works, and breaks very useful player QOL features live 'V'iew and loot zones.
>>528270650it does have the powergrid system and it's updated
from some of the recent updates, they changed the old ass pathfinding algorithm to a more efficient and optimized one
>>528270297>>528270793and also it is like the ultimate example of menu cancer in video games. I can't think of a single example of something in any other game that takes so much menu time and effort for such a minor gain to gameplay.
>>528270884maybe I will try it, I'm definitely more in line with its stance about the direction of the game. The item bloat in dda is getting so unbearable that it's making the game agonizing to play. like you said apparently there is a need for a hundred varieties of colored and flavored condoms, probably because its the fetish of some tranny freak.

>/maps/ contains directories with "segments", aka 32x32 chunks of overmapHow does that work? Overmap is 180x180 omts. Can't split that to 32. Wouldn't it have to be 30x30? So each overmap would split into 6x6 segments.
Each file in /maps/ subdirectories being a single omt with absolute coordinates makes sense but fuck if the coordinates of those directories aren't annoying.

I already tentatively deleted 538 completely unseen overmaps and their empty seen files. Now trying to figure out how to fix mapgen errors in freshly generated overmaps. I'm still seeing some weird map generation bugs that only occur in overmaps generated in previous versions. Stuff like some houses missing their palettes or somesuch properties.
Another surprising thing is that the freshly generated areas aren't seeded. I get different results every time I generate them. I always thought the world reset on death feature would give youa fresh go in the same world seed, just spawn you in a different location.

>>528383568>Their grids don't have to align>their only purpose is to split up billion json files in /maps/ folder so fs doesn't choke on themSeems like a misguided premature optimization, it's not very well suited for large saves.
Splitting them into directories by overmap z-level would work better. Theoretical maximum 180x180 files per directory. That's what, 30k? I already have more subdirectories in /maps/ than that.
>It'll wreck some npcs, quests and unique locationsYeah I'm aware. There's a file that dictates which unique locations are already generated and much of the original worldgen predates that anyways. The map is chock full of duplicate unique locations, some of them turned into omt_obsolete god knows when. Plus there's a ton of player characters on the world. Some NPC camps have been taken over with ancient versions of follower basecamps that no longer work. I even have multiple ways to segfault the game on demand. There's one hub01 that gives me free stuff endlessly and loops the first mission, I have no idea why. Some towns are full of cars without wheels, other without seats. Because of deprecated parts/variants that were never migrated properly. Things are a bit buggy. Maintaining an old save is fun I swear. Nether is slowly claiming the world, just not in the way the devs envisioned.
>Generated houses are local map, not overmap. Overmaps only tell where to gen and whatThere's a lot of args on the overmap level nowadays.
Random house genned in 0.F
>oter>oter_typeRandom house genned after 0.G

If the args don't get set properly (overmap genned in older version but the map was never visited) you get bugged empty houses.

Spells are tools, and you need to pick the tools that get you through the levels. Items are randomized too, so you'll usually get different items than you imagined using at the start of the game. Especially in the first 4 levels, you'll usually get offered some item that is ridiculously OP and you kinda have to roll with it when you find it, because realm 5 always has some asshole wizard that is coming to fuck you if you're not ready to rock and roll by that point.
Sure, eventually you'll settle on a few magic schools that you buff to the moon with stacking items and passives, but it's hard to make a specific build that will always succeed like you can in Achra. There are 100% immunities and lots of gotcha enemies in RW2 so it's better to be flexible and rely on early power spikes from items, whatever those items happen to be. RW2 is a lot more rogueish in that sense than RW1 ever was, because the early difficulty forces you into improvising. Then you get into late game and you have all the skill points you need, so you kinda end up taking every passive that works with your spells, especially if you know how to abuse some of the game mechanics to get extra skill points. The fact 2/3 of my runs end up using cracklevoid and prince of ruin detracts from the build variety, but how else are you going to deal with bone shamblers that split into 1024 mini shamblers?
Sorry for the rant but it's not the same kind of "build making" as Achra. It's a lot messier than that, and you never get cut off from any of the good options, unlike Achra which forces you to pick 3 schools total. In Rift Wizard you just take everything that is good for your character at the moment.
>>528408413Youโre right about the Achra similarity, Achra was majorly inspired by Rift Wizard 1. However, unlike Achra, both Rift Wizards are incredibly difficult. Enemies start scaling so hard into the lategame that unless you have a plan to mitigate it, the entire map will be within enemy range and you will die on turn 1 or 2 no matter where you drop in. Despite its ball-crushing difficulty, Rift Wizard never throws any surprises at you. You have a choice of 3 different levels to go to next (with the ability to reroll all 3 once if you want) and you can see the entire level layout before you go there, and youโre allowed to drop on any empty tile when entering a level. You also have the entire gameโs library of active spells and passive skills available for purchase at all times. You buy more with memory orbs you collect along the way. Now why 2 instead of 1? It made a few key changes I think were positive. First, multi-tile enemies, theyโre cool. Second, they replaced the shrine system that encouraged making a single god spell with an equipment system that encourages using multiple spells. Lastly, they made you heal to full and regain all your spell charges at the end of each level (in exchange for making health and mana potions rarer) making it feel like less like survival horror resource management, and letting the dev experiment with spells and skills that can heal you, cost hp, or refund spell charges. Good luck wizard! And if you somehow beat the base game there are a bunch of challenge modes too.

QUD
Although I donโt find Qud particularly fun to play after 500 hours
probably not going to make it.

I haven't played roguelikes or been in this general in like a decade, but I was trying Barony with some friends and I felt nostalgic. It looks like nothing has changed for DCSS, should I check out something more modern? I remember spending a lot of time on Elona, how is Elin?
what are you playing right now?
>>528426203Honestly you haven't missed much
>>528426298Father doesn't let me play roguelikes on Sunday...
>>528427316oof that's a bummer
yep it's time to wrap it up.
>>528426203Elin is more building/crafting focused rather than adventuring
I don't care for it over Elona
>>528426203>a decadeyou should try jupiter hell, especially if you liked d**mrl
>>528278091At least Pakistani dudes can program.
Any reason in DCSS that "Nothing appears to happen" would start constantly happening? I started getting this message every turn and now it has suddenly fixed itself lol. Playing on Kimchi fork
