I'm revisiting MH World and is it me or is the movement while mounted extremely finicky?
Say i'm mounting a Rathian, i'm on its midsection and I want to move to its head which is on the left side of my screen. So I flick my stick left and for some reason my hunter decides to go to the fucking tail instead. I just wasted an entire stamina bar on a mount because my hunter simply would not move where I wanted him to go.

the sword attacks feel like wet noodle slaps and the big axe attacks have so much windup that even trying to take advantage of a monster standing still or recovering from an attack doesn't work because they still move before the attack happens
or the most frustrating thing, setting up an attack, the monster turns a little and slides you to the side a couple inches, and then your attack misses entirely and you get hit during your recovery animation
plus it's really hard to aim the saed especially on mouse and keyboard, and the range it has plus the further range of the explosions makes it feel bad on smaller enemies
plus it doesn't even do that much damage compared to how much setup it takes, and there's no defensive or evasive option like what greatsword has when you're doing the attack
do I just need to get good? I understand the weapon and the flow of phials and charging and combos but it just does not feel good to play a lot of the time and it feels very one note
at least other one note weapons like insect glaive pump out damage, or other low damage weapons like gunlance are fun and have complexity

I mean considering i have a relatively small amount of hours in wilds i might just be unfamiliar with the deep ins and outs of why focus mode actually sucks but i just found the feature to be fun and rewarding for better positioning or moving around a monster in ways we otherwise couldn't do before. It gives more control over the hunter's movement which means more skill expression for responding to or dancing around mons. Also, I don't particularly like offsets or everything getting counters and so i never used them for my time playing, same as when i played through gu i only used guild style and never used hunter arts for 90% of my playthrough, so i don't really have a strong opinion on them besides not liking them in principle.

i pretty much just use the grapple hook if i use a gs. i think the gs standard attack is pretty bad, but the grapple does as much damage as a fully charged gs attack. and it's also quite reliable to target the same body part with it. and grappling gives you good mobility, and if you time it you can even evade attacks. so grappling complements gs very well.
but i think the fun of the game is learning the trick weapon combat, so i definitely want to do that.

i know that one because i did it by mistake a bunch. it's low damage and ends the combo. i'm no expert but i think you should avoid doing that.
try tackling. it is difficult on bosses, but if you can charge -> interrupt with tackle -> charge -> interrupt with tackle -> true charge... this does a lot of damage. the tackles are a lot of damage on their own, so if it looks like you won't make the next charge tier you can tackle, it does a lot of poise damage which can give you time to charge again, or knock the enemy out of attack frames.
but timing the attacks can be unreliable, i think that the hit boxes behave in weird ways sometimes. and you don't get hyper-armor so if you're trying to time a swing at a charging enemy forget about it, your sword will be an inch from his head swinging with full momentum and he'll knock you on your ass. meanwhile the grapple is reliable, does about as much damage as a charged attack, and is a great gap closer for gs which has bad mobility.

it's not as useful with other weapons from what i've tested. but i haven't tried the great hammer yet.

It's literally gen5 gunning, do it doesn't matter for ranged.

for melee it depends on the weapon, like with Lance, GL, SnS, DB it's not really changing much about how I play. IG has to keep it on for the bug but outside that it's inconsequential since Wilds IG is a Blender.
It's actively detrimental with Hammer because outside of Focus you can release charge turning on a time, mea while Focus has to aim to turn.

Older Monster Hunter games are nothing like the new ones. There is a lot more grind and time involved. I'd say it's probably the most fun I've had with older MH titles though. I like the Pokke farm, I like mining, I like the granny who has random items on discount and the hub is really easy to navigate. The music is relaxing, I'd say it would be a perfect Monster Hunter with some small QoL improvements such as the option to put all items in box from the farm. I think Monsters are overall 1000x more challenging here than in Wilds but I feel like Yian Kutku is better in Wilds. I kinda wish all wildlife in Wilds was aggressive like they are here. You get a sense of animals being really stressed and attacking whatevers in their wilds in Freedom Unite. Kinda wish that was in everygame. I'm grinding my armor to kill Shen Gaoren. I like Monsters being hostile when I'm around. Capcom did a lot of strange choices with World, I feel that they were just trying to create a very different game and it panned out really well for them by using the Monster Hunter IP for it. The way I see it is, Monster Hunter is pushing for a very casualized action adventure game. It sacrifices it's identity in the process but in return you get Monsters. I certainly hope that Outlanders ends up amazing though. If I can get a modernish version of old MH I wouldn't need anything else to play.

The last AAA game that was actually engaging for my entire playthrough was Fallen Order. Feels bad that the sequel sucks ass. I'm hoping TU2 turns things around for Wilds cause I actually really love Insect Glaive. Azure Rathalos has a weird pattern. He flies up, shoots 3 fireballs goes down. Then either runs or dashes or flies up again to shoot fireballs. It rinse and repeats with an occasional poison attack inbetween. I think Kirin has been the easiest thing so far with Hammer. Just bomb it and hit it in the face while it runs around like an Anteka.
