I'm revisiting MH World and is it me or is the movement while mounted extremely finicky?
Say i'm mounting a Rathian, i'm on its midsection and I want to move to its head which is on the left side of my screen. So I flick my stick left and for some reason my hunter decides to go to the fucking tail instead. I just wasted an entire stamina bar on a mount because my hunter simply would not move where I wanted him to go.
Am I just stupid or is there something i'm missing here?

the sword attacks feel like wet noodle slaps and the big axe attacks have so much windup that even trying to take advantage of a monster standing still or recovering from an attack doesn't work because they still move before the attack happens
or the most frustrating thing, setting up an attack, the monster turns a little and slides you to the side a couple inches, and then your attack misses entirely and you get hit during your recovery animation
plus it's really hard to aim the saed especially on mouse and keyboard, and the range it has plus the further range of the explosions makes it feel bad on smaller enemies
plus it doesn't even do that much damage compared to how much setup it takes, and there's no defensive or evasive option like what greatsword has when you're doing the attack
do I just need to get good? I understand the weapon and the flow of phials and charging and combos but it just does not feel good to play a lot of the time and it feels very one note
at least other one note weapons like insect glaive pump out damage, or other low damage weapons like gunlance are fun and have complexity

I mean considering i have a relatively small amount of hours in wilds i might just be unfamiliar with the deep ins and outs of why focus mode actually sucks but i just found the feature to be fun and rewarding for better positioning or moving around a monster in ways we otherwise couldn't do before. It gives more control over the hunter's movement which means more skill expression for responding to or dancing around mons. Also, I don't particularly like offsets or everything getting counters and so i never used them for my time playing, same as when i played through gu i only used guild style and never used hunter arts for 90% of my playthrough, so i don't really have a strong opinion on them besides not liking them in principle.

last i played you still needed to go to the monster and either be some distance away from or towards it to hit it, and then not be where it's attacks would hit you, which is to say positioning. All im saying is focus mode gives you more options for controlling and engaging that positioning skill which means more skill expression regardless of whether or not the game actually demands it from you.

i pretty much just use the grapple hook if i use a gs. i think the gs standard attack is pretty bad, but the grapple does as much damage as a fully charged gs attack. and it's also quite reliable to target the same body part with it. and grappling gives you good mobility, and if you time it you can even evade attacks. so grappling complements gs very well.
but i think the fun of the game is learning the trick weapon combat, so i definitely want to do that.
