Take good fights and use your team's abilities, for example I had a legion that did poorly but all she had to do was blink + duel on top of a carry while we bursted him. Use smokes, etc.
I think it's sometimes possible but thing is many players lose their shit when they're not winning like a bunch of little kids they are and start griefing, pinging and shitting up the match.
Just because there's a gold advantage doesn't mean you can't press your buttons and clutch something out.
I manage to pull games like this with Lycan, I send my creeps at one support, burst down the most troublesome guy with my team, etc.

You're a duel bot with a strong dispel that can win fights. Obviously go with a 4-4-1 build instead of maxing MoC first or second as your 'parry' scales with farm. Talents to match your role as someone that disrupts fights and keeps your team alive.
I'd recommend getting an early echo sabre (as it solves your mana issues and can be disassembled into an ogre club for BKB or the lotus orb component)

Your best facet is spoils of war because giving your team's actual carry damage is far more valuable than stacking damage on yourself. The barrier on overwhelming odds may help you out when laning but since the game tends to go past 10 minutes it doesn't matter.

Usually cores' itemization is something like this:
farming item(s) -> mobility -> sustain/dispel -> lockdown -> damage
or
farming item(s) -> mobility -> sustain/dispel -> damage -> lockdown
or just some combination of those
or something like that. usually heroes have an ability that does one of those things, so you don't need an item that does it.
Faceless Void for example, has no farm ability, has mobility with Time Walk, has sustain with Time Walk, has lockdown with Time Dilation, Time Lock, and Chronosphere. So as you can see, you lacks a farming item and damage. So those are the priorities with FV is farming items and damage. Then maybe a dispel with BKB or Manta.
Antimage for example, has mobility with Blink, sustain with Counterspell, and some damage with Mana Break and Mana Void. He lacks an ability to farm and dispel and lockdown. So those are the priorities with Antimage, you go with battle fury for farm, then manta for dispel, then basher or skadi or something for lockdown
but you can kinda do this with other heroes too to try and carry with them. Leshrac for example, can farm with his ult, no mobility, no sustain or dispel, some lockdown, and has some damage. So you need sustain from mana to farm with your ult, so you buy like mana boots and raindrops and clarities and void stone and a kaya to help sustain the mana to farm. He has no mobility, so blink is good on him. he has no health sustain, so you go bloodstone for health sustain. he has no dispel, so you can go euls for dispel. and then you can buy Shivas for more health sustain, damage, and a little lockdown from the slow.

Former League player here, 643 hours in (more like 550) and I finally hit Archon, I'm slowly understanding this game. These games, even though both are moba, really aren't comparable. I was the top 0.5% of the playerbase (Master) so it definitely helps but the skill doesn't transfer from one game to another, unlike in FPS games.

well I rarely play mid so it's mostly 2v2 and people often just sit on the lane instead of roaming in this shitter elo. Anyway the laning is completely different because of mechanics like denying and pulling. In League you can't impact (well you can, but barely) the lane equilibrium and you definitely can't just fuck off to jungle or tp to the other lane.
What transfered, for me at least, is the knowledge not to overcommit, not to walk up for no reason and to sometimes just give up the creep if I'm about to take a lot of damage. Just the very basic stuff

The most mindbreaking thing in dota for me at the start was the all-around invisibility. I get how to combat it now and when to expect someone invis, but I think I still don't get how to actually snowball the game. My teammates don't really want to do tormentors, there are games where we take 6 towers and just kinda don't do anything for a good while.

this is an issue for me in high Legend too. when I was playing a lot about a year ago people were doing them regularly at this MMR so I guess moving them from where the Wisdom Shrines are to the corners changed people's opinions of them.
I think they're mostly ignored because their benefit in the past was to help supports get more gold, but gold isn't a huge bottleneck anymore due to many changes, such as passive gold being reliable instead of unreliable.
