It's a bit distressing to think it's been 6 years since Chapter 1 first came out... But other than that, I've had a great time with it! Gameplay wise, I don't think it could be more of an objective improvement from Undertale's systems. Keep in mind Sunny dreamed of killing himself presumably every single night. You can pre-emptively wake Sunny up by having Omori stab himself in White Space, which is a strong indicator that this is the usual for him, while stuff like waking up after Black Space is the unusual. And considering he can actually go through with it after two button presses with minimal hesitation on Sunny's part, Sunny wasn't exactly in the most stable of places. And he carries that knife around almost all the time. The only reason he never killed himself until any of the bad endings is that he was just that mentally shut down and repressed that he could exist as is.

It's another interesting addition to the idea of Headspace being real and so are the characters in it when they can notice some of the oddities in the world. Black Space even has a role in Sprout Mole history, their ancestors digging too deep into the world and finding the Deep Pit which swallowed the majority of their kind. Or maybe Sunny's just that much of an attention freak that he allows even the things which should be shut out of his dream have a role and purpose in its narrative.

Thinking about it now it almost feels like maybe this was from part of earlier dev time when it was intended for the characters to acknowledge more of the stuff with Black Space (like the black letters dialogue).

It might be. It's really interesting how Black Space has different names depending on who's talking about it. The Abyss, The Shadowy Chasm, Dark Void, Deep Pit. We know these are all referring to the same thing thanks to Hitchhiker telling us, and also these particular bits of dialogue internally being stored under dreamworld_extras_blackspace. But it's especially interesting how it genuinely plays a role in things. Namely the Sprout Mole example I gave. They feel like notable outliers because these people feel like they're talking about something they only know from legend, compared to someone like Daddy Longlegs or Mr. Outback who clearly are in-the-know about these things. It's an odd bit of history to Headspace that feels like its ignorant inhabitants being caught up in something beyond them.
And on the topic of an Omori enhanced edition, I'd really like to see the often talked about faraway_conditional expanded. As of now, what exists feels like a few ideas that were written out and left on the cutting room floor because they just didn't have time to implement and make it substantial. Especially the part where seeing the real world versions of Sunny's friends impacts how they act in his dreams. Aubrey being more violent when Kel pranks her, even to the point of shocking herself, is a really nice showing of Sunny's dreamworld being shaken by what he's experienced.

Trying to think seriously about this now, Otherworld does seem pretty nice, but that might be because it has the most clearly "residential" area in the game, with the most relaxed environment, and a lot of details of where residents actually live aren't shown (and might not really exist since it's not part of Headspace's narrative for Omori to explore).
Vast Forest seems... well, vast, and without too many actual houses. Presumably the kids at the playground don't need homes if they stay up all the time via Dream Logic, so we never see what those homes are like. I assume Sunny wouldn't dream up shoddy places for them, though, so it should be a nice place.
Pyrefly Forest has even less apparent habitation, the unique threat of Rare Bears and the King Crawler and Carnivore, and a pretty dismal, spider-infested atmosphere, and that only ends with the Sprout Mole Village and Sweetheart's Castle, which are unfortunately full of Sprout Moles and apparently managed and/or controlled by Sweetheart.
Orange Oasis is a popular tourist destination and the people there seem content to live in perpetually clean and fresh food houses, plus there's probably good job opportunities relating to archaeology. I do wonder if it's uncomfortably warm or cold, though- that's how real deserts are in day and night respectively but if Headspace is sorta in a weird stasis of conveniently bright nighttime it might just be temperate year-round.
Underwater Highway has houses alongside it but there's problems with Squizzards, road potholes, Jawsum owning most of it, the toll gators, and proximity to a known murderer and organ harvester plus her sisters in crime. And we sadly don't see what the city's like.
Deeper Well is a no-go and I haven't seen Snowglobe Mountain (probably no-go as well).
