Try using both during big attacks. Your skill recharges fast enough to where you can use it for smaller attacks and still build up the mega punch over time.
You get the mega punch from ALL damage, by the way. You can even build it up when using the crimsonwhirl tear, so pop one of those for every non-physical attack a nightlord does and you’ll get a punch and a heal.

Most of his horizontal and poke attacks are able to be strafed around for a punish (especially the drill, he may as well hold up a sign that says "run around me and perform a fully charged heavy attack), which will usually put you in a position to bait out his shield slam, which has such a long recovery that you can punish it with a colossal jumping heavy (just be sure not to jump in too quick, otherwise he'll hit you with an explosion). Those are going to be the most versatile and fastest arts to break stance. Giant hunt knocks them down so it might actually reset their stance and dosent work on bosses. Lion's claw or impaling thrust are what you're probably gonna want on the majority of bosses depending on how they move and how easy that makes the art connect. Just good arts in general, practical tools you can use for more than just stance breaking.

It's better on bigger weapons because nothing short of a blow that would outright kill you is going to knock out of it. So it's a big trades kind of thing which become progressively less favorable late game. There's also savage lion's claw in the dlc that let's you combo the lion's claw into another stronger lion's claw. Glintblade phalynx the weapon art not the spell does huge poise damage it's slow windup but you can combo it with something like shield counters to instapop stance break on a lotta things. It's really just how much stuff you want to put in the mix

Anons when the castle is trolls the only one you should do last is the one with a merchant right under him. His tiny area has no covers to block bombs AND you trigger 2 trolls. The one next to this one can be fought solo just use any projectile to drag him out. Same deal with others.

Why then does it feel so urgent to do dps, instead of playing normally and observe boss moves and save stamina for dodging and not swinging without an obvious opening etc?

When the game first launched people said the ring moved to fast and they panic and can't feel comfy playing. The ring does start moving a little too fast but people here overcompensated and started putting on relics to up rune gains and started maximizing DPS over everything else and now get to level 15 early into day 2 but don't know really basic stuff about the game because all they do is sprint forward and ultimate a boss then sprint forward.
Most of them also cheat and cheated in perfect relics so they've seen the conceptual topend they could do and like a drug can't get off that dragon even though they could be beating these bosses easily at level 10.

They overcorrected and can't go back. Autism makes them make bad choices when it comes to adapting to situations well.

You are utilizing it on your magic swords. You take 1 support staff as your magic bow as duchess, anon. She isn't designed as a spellcaster. No variant of spellcasting with her is right she is a dps perfectionist with her quickstep true combo chains and restaging them.
The flipside of this is Recluse, she should take 1 magic sword as a backup in case things get close. Recluse is the magic spellcaster.

Both classes want magic stuff, but the balance of which types of magic stuff in their kit is flip flopped. None of the characters are secretly the best at something that isn't what their skills tell you they are best at. They are all best at the stuff they are built to be best around. If you don't think so you don't know how to play that character right. They are all insanely strong if played as intended and never reach that level if played wrong. Even trashier characters like Rev and Guardian are best if you just do what they are made to do.

But the issue I have with spells on duchess are the two things. Mostly the speed of the spell and the overall dps (or lack thereof) weighing every single staff in the game against landing a reprise on an enemy your allies or hitting.

With that relic there aren't a whole lot of spells that can punch through the 20% malus most enemies that matter have and even come close to breaking even to dagger damage + restage

Charging things either spells attacks or skills feels like it has way more oomph in this game than ER. Some of the magic spells feel like the doom super shotgun when charged. The ragdoll tossing them even looks meatier you can feel the extra power some stuff has in this game compared to ER.

It's pretty strong, doesn't take that long to charge, has good range and the projectile is very hard to miss, I always keep it. I don't know the puzzle solution for all of them yet and don't play magic build so the magic weighted crystal reward at the top isn't always worth it for me. I can get non magics sometimes, but sometimes its only 2 weapon options not even a 3rd passive so it is just a waste unless I grab and drop and people fuck that up sometimes (grabbing the initial item I drop to make room, or not picking up the magic item I'll be
dropping and wasting the time).
But I will try to learn more of the solutions and play the magic classes more.

It really doesn't lol. Thrusting Swords aren't exactly Duchess "natural" weapon type even though she can certainly lean into that. Carian Swordceries are also just a random spell type and not a god roll: yes slicer is great but there is like whopping 3 spells in that category so far from guaranteed every run.
Starting Armament deals holy damage is also just random albeit decent (but then again doesn't synergize with Thrusting Sword part)
+1 Int basically disproves your theory about cheated gems because it's not even +3 (unless you're schizo enough to claim they cheated it in deliberately like that to make it seem less cheaty). Dude its fucking 42 + 1. It's a drop in the sea and not great on Duchess.
