while I do like the Sonic/Shadow levels the best, I still do enjoy the other play styles. The problem is they have issues that hold them back. The treasure hunting stages are fun, but the gimmicks and larger maps in the later levels make them a pain to go through, especially if you're trying to get high scores. While the mech stages are more straight forward, the movement tends to feel a bit clunky and slow compared to high paced action of other stages.

The biggest jobber in Archie was objectively Blaze. She kept losing to fodder enemies like Swatbots and Metal Sonics while having virtually no presence in the main story besides Worlds Collide, being a minor recurring character in Universe with appearances spaced out by years. Why? Because at this point his work is boring, predictable, and cliché. People were already annoyed by his attempts to lazily pander to nostalgia by shoehorning references for reference' sake, but what people really hate are his attempts to modify the characters so they're more palatable to him. Instead of just writing them as faithful as he could to whatever standard, be it adventure or some enduring brand Geist, he made the mistake of trying to smooth out their rough edges.

Now, that's not even getting into his other pitfalls, like plagiarizing (unreliable) third-party sources, spurring fan drama by making reckless statements about the canon on his podcast or social media, falling in to bad writing tropes etc. But the way he handles the characters is going to be at the surface of a lot of gripes with his writing for any fan.

In Ian's defense, he has consistently stated that SEGA are sensitive with how the characters are portrayed, so how much influence he actually has over their direction is debatable. But as far as the stories and plots go, he's bragged about having a lot of "latitude" with sonic.

Generations seemed(at first glance) to be a celebration of the entire Sonic franchise. Sure, there was many glaring omissions like nothing from Shadow 05, Secret Rings, Black Knight, the Advance Trilogy, and Sonic Battle but people were willing to brush that aside due to believing that Sonic Team couldn't add them in due to time constraints. I did. In many ways it feels like I shouldn't enjoy Frontiers, but a lot of it just ends up being fun. The controls feel good for the most part, and the tower climbs (especially in The Final Horizon) are fun. I'm not fond of large open areas with no goals though, so my preferred way to play is actually the main menu, I hope the next game has more arcade modes like that, and I also want the platforming to be challenging and creative like in The Final Horizon

I only followed the game online without actually buying or playing it, and I don't regret doing so. Praise the game all you want, it's an incomplete skeleton with a bunch of different ideas put together and adhesive medical strips slapped on to it over the course of the year.

That's because its levels are made out of simples shapes like cubes and rectangles. There's nothing wrong with that of course but I don't think that would fit an open world map as they need to be more natural and organic imo.
I think Sonic 06 had the right idea with Flame Core as all the walkable parts of the cliffs are made out of smooth and flat floors with hard edges that make Sonic fall off them instead of run down them.
Do you think that would still look good in a new Sonic game? Personally I though it looked good in P-06
