uhhh... i think the only unit that you can't get is Lotta from an event, who is a decent unit but not the end of the world. although i think you can actually buy her with ingame currency but it's prohibitively expensive idk how that works.
and yes you would have missed some event specific skins.
the main thing you've missed is the stories for all the events we've had because for some idiotic reason the devs still haven't put in the feature to watch past events. so you'd have to youtube the event stories if you care about the lore.

besides all that shouldn't be that bad.
and as far as i'm aware there's no difference between standalone vs steam, although if you play on phone too i don't know if playing on steam makes that harder. i play on standalone and have a sunborn ID (username/password you can make) and i just have to type that in on the phone app and it works fine, not sure if steam messes with that. you can probably just make an account in the steam version too but i haven't tried

The game has two different publishers which are region locked. You can play on each publisher's standalone version just fine but Steam will force you into whatever publisher is for your country.
The publisher thing isn't that big of a deal, it's the same game you just play on a different server. The majority of players are on Darkwinter but there's still ~200 or so 4chan players on Haoplay Global.

They use different accounts. If you don't want to bother with it just use the Steam version and that'll automatically also match your mobile version. If you want to play on a different publisher you'd have to use their standalone client or a third party store with the download for that publisher.

there's a game mode called expansion drills that can be challenging without good characters (which you don't have since you're new) so you'd probably enjoy those. once you do get good characters you'd probably need to force yourself to use bad ones if you want a challenge though
