Thinking about it in the long run, perhaps SNK's jump to 3D was a massive mistake. I think SNK right now would be in a much better spot in the current FGC climate and still stand out if they stuck to 2D and were able to perfect those visuals and modernize them.

Yes, KOFXIII was crazy expensive, tanked the company, consumers snubbed it for being 2D while the industry shifted to 3D as the standard and all normalfags seem to hate anything not 3D, so it's understandable they abandoned it during that current climate. But they are in a position now where they can't stand out in the pack at all, Street Fighter does better 3D realism, Arcsys does better 3D anime artstyle, SNK currently excels at neither, and with Blazblue dead there's no modern fighter with 2D aside from UNI which never got popular. It would be a massive gamble and playing the long game but I think it could (coping) have worked out for them with some luck.

In the past it was impossible for SNK because of the debts they had - it was either go big or go home.
Current SNK is debt free (I think), but for them to return to 2D they must accept having small teams, tightly controlled budgets, being a small fish in a big pond, etc. and with the current state of 400+ employees and the last CEO filling the heads of the Saudis with ideas of rivaling Capcom - I don't think it's an option.

I never got this story about how KOF12 and KOF13 " tanked" SNK. The thing about SNK is, their products now are just so STERILE. Nothing they've made in years have felt high-effort in visuals which everyone knows by now, and also presentation in-general. The UI in their games are power-point tier, the menus feel lifeless, etcetera. Just compare COTW menu to SF6 and Tekken 8's. Compare both COTW and KOF 15's character select to SF6's. Their games are such a far-cry from the others in presentation. Tekken and SF feel lively, big-budgeted, and high-effort, while SNK's stuff feel extremely cheap, indie, and low-budget in comparison. SNK couldn't even be bothered to do the dumb little virtual arcade-center lobby thing most FGs, including even niche ones like Blazblue do now. Instead, they just have an ugly, puke-green/yellow screen with square-boxes everywhere. The kind of marketing they did with COTW as if it's some kind of product that's some AAA-tier creation with the same amount of spectacle as SF and Tekken is bewildering. Not just the extra damage you're able to do, but given that you use less REV Meter you should be able to do longer REV Accel combos/blockstrings, or more of the shorter ones.
