Lasker's was the other I was thinking about. Very well detailed, though it feels more for "advanced beginner" than pure beginner. His faux-biblical writing style could also understandably grate.
There's also Tartakower's (French) chess primer, Znosko-Borovsky's "How Not to Play Chess", and Euwe's "Practische Schaaklessen" (which was translated into Russian and used as a primer over there for decades) but I haven't read any of those yet.

Anyone over 2100 strength would have to accept that if they play extremely accurate games, they need to either identify themselves in some way as a known legitimately strong player, or get booted from the paranoid tournaments - with no hard feelings. Essentially, we would have our own 'fair play' policy with very strict standards, and being ejected from these tournaments would not necessarily be an accusation of cheating

idk if it would be worth the effort, because I don't know exactly why the tournaments fell apart. I think it was a combination of factors, including catmixer's infiltration, the move from /tg/, beary ending his channel, doxing threats, 'weavers are cheaters' rhetoric, etc. and all of these tending to decrease enthusiasm and make people less likely to take time out of their day to participate
