This and UG American Revolution were the only real 'Total War killers', problem is they had no budget, had unpopular settings, had a small team working on them and then the studio got bought out before even finishing American Revolution.

I'm not up to date with the lore but as I recall they were basically turned into green humans with a kind of 'noble savage' feel to them, they got a lot of attentio throughout the years but I wasn't really a fan of them. Warhammer orks and especially their 40k counterpart the okrz are much more one dimensional but they have a real charm to them that the Warcraft ones lack imo.
I can easily get invested in the Warhammer ones as a species whereas in Warcraft I was only really invested in a few of their named characters.

The Thanquol part seems a bit too punishing, with very few upsides. I keep hearing that Shogun 2 is the best gunpowder TW and the naval combat and artillery really is way better than the ones in Empire and Napoleon but the actual line infantry vs line infantry combat is worse than even Empire with all it's bugs, nevermind Napoleon. The sound, the smoke, the animations just feel weak in comparison, melee infantry and cavalry are also too strong for the first half of the campaign so battles just devolve into the usual melee shithousery way too often.
