The games after VII are a huge roller coaster in terms of quality. VII was epic, SvS is one step forward two steps back, GMRE looks a little better, I like the design of RvD and it seems like Compa threw all its experience (both technical and design) out of the window and burned through their budgets with the release of Scarlead.

The translation was censored post-release on PC and PS4/5. Someone at IFI fucked up and didn't show the ESRB any swearing. Rather than doing the right thing and resubmitting the game for a proper rating, they chose to censor it.

What this means is that the PS versions can still be played uncensored if you refuse the patch, but the Switch version comes with the censored script out of the box. The Steam version these days presumably comes pre-patched, but there's a decensor mod IIRC.

The writing team has been a revolving door since mk2. Only one of the writers from HDN stuck around for mk2 IIRC and then they left with V while the other writers from mk2 remained and a new guy joined in. The Re;Birth trilogy had the new guy from V, likely as a consultant, and new writers from Felistella for the new content. By the time VII went into production, none of these writers remained. Oddly enough, Tsunako got a writing credit in VII for whatever that's worth.

And then none of those writers stuck around for the releases after VII.

The main issue is everyone assumes South Korea is a haven for Ecchi. For how much I complain about devs like Compile Heart not making the kind of material they used to, I concur with basically everything here.
