I had to look into this out for myself. Apparently in the 2018 demo version of Omori, the Mailbox was a completely different character. This white fox masked girl named Cheers would pop out of the mailbox to sell you items instead of staying inside. As we all know, this never happens in the final. There's always something new to learn. I didn't know this character existed. I imagine people saw a fox masked girl and connected it to Inko, the only other fox masked character we know of in Omori's development history.

I think she still would have ended up a similar person. Just more well adjusted without a tragedy like Mari's death and her old friends falling apart like they did. Her friends still being around to reel her in. But sad as it is to say, I still think the friends would have slowly drifted apart anyways. Hero and Mari heading to college would keep them away for long periods of time where they'd have new lives and meet new people, Kel would slowly start making new friends in sports which would take up his time, and Aubrey would probably find her interests more aligning with Kim and the others, leaving Sunny and Basil to probably either be orphaned from a friend group or merge with Aubrey's new friends. This is more of an eye of the beholder thing. I personally stand by the idea that Aubrey went to Sunny because she wanted an non-judgmental ear to listen to and take in her troubles, not someone to solve her problems or offer substantial advice. I think she'd have to gone to Mari or Hero or even their parents if she seriously wanted help in her situation.

Sunny clearly does care. They sit next to each other and exchange glances in a few scenes, when examining Aubrey sleeping on the couch the dialogue shows he still cares, and on Memory Lane she changes into her grown self if you want to use that as symbolism. And you can find grown Aubrey and Sunny on a swingset in the docks area of Black Space 2 only if you go outside.

Both love steak and the few instances they'll fight is over the last piece. They have separate beds, but usually share anyways out of habit.
