I think part of combos being Burst safe is fine so long as it's done in a way where you'll route differently in order to Burst bait, but that wasn't the case with the characters who could just autopilot it, it just happened. The absolute minimum I'd want is for it to at least feel like a unique strength in that character's moveset that balanced out some other flaw, but it didn't feel like there was any particular rhyme or reason to characters who would just autopilot it. If anything, the characters who could to it needed it less than others, it's not like May or Nago were struggling to do damage and them being so Burst safe felt like a way to balance it out, they did loads of damage and just got to be really Burst safe too without having to put any thought into it.

i just don't like the idea of burst being baitable in a game with extreme overwhelming obnoxious offense. It costs a shitload so let me out of your stupid combo ALWAYS

I used to like doing sick readz on a burst when I played Anji by using butterfly instead of fuujin in a combo which would leave me just barely out of the burst range.

Burst is a crutch mechanic. Every problem with the game would be five times worse if burst did not exsist.

If they removed it from the game, arcsys would actually have to balance shit, or else it would basically be unplayable.

burst is needed far more in this game than the previous ones because avg damage is way higher and situations are more scramble focused but they fucked up the burst design because hitting burst is a lot stronger due to it being a knockdown with strive's lack of air tech and positive bonus gives you not just meter but also burst back. Burst is far stronger here than it was before which is what makes it feel a lot worse. I remember playing millia on release, the situation of getting hit by burst and knocked down made me feel like if I didn't bait burst I would probably lose the round from it. Terrible feeling.

I had to look it up too; the Tolouse Metro runs on road tires, just using rails to keep it aligned. So while it might offend anorak-wearing train purists since it's not steel wheels on steel track, I'm not sure why people get mad at it otherwise. Which characters are the best versions of themselves? What I mean is that everyone else besides these characters is just a worse version of them. A character can be bad but not a worse version of someone, and a character can be good but pretty much a weaker (even if slightly) version of someone.

HC is, for better or for worse, the only truly unique character. every other character in the game is just "[other character(even if from another franchise)] but..." but I legitimately cannot think of a time in a 2d fighter or brawler a time where someone like HC existed. Even in singleplayer jump n' shoot games, it is incredibly rare to have an auto-aim hitscan projectile be the core of your plan, let alone exist at all. If you reduce characters down to core gameplay elements, they're all mostly the same and have a pedigree that goes beyond fighters, both sideways into other genres and in that fighters took cues from games that existed even before them.

Closest I can think of is Axl/Model A from Megaman ZXA, but even then, that character's homing hitscan attack was effectively a super and would hit the entire screen; they had access to a very fast homing projectile but you had to "scan" the area in front of you to lock-on to enemies, it wasn't automatic with RNG drift like HC is/was.

No, I mean in terms of archetypes (kind of). Let's say we have 5 characters that heavily emphasize controlling space (or pick any specific gameplan/idea). 4 of them are good (one is slightly better than the others), and the last one sucks ass but is so unique in their execution/idea/gameplan. So of the 4 similar ones, 3 would just be a worse version (no matter how slightly) of the best one and that 5th character despite being shit has a real reason to be played since they aren't just a worse version of the best of the original group.

As an analogy, think of very similar bands/movies/whatever but one is the best, and then think of one of those that might be shit but it is so unique in its idea that it can't really be compared as a worse version of something else, and is just uniquely shit. Do you get what I am saying?

well if you shrink it far enough, every character's goal is to place a box on the screen where you are not allowed to be in a certain large group of states (i.e. not blocking, or airborne against grabs, except for airgrabs...)
if you're in that space, you lose points. whoever loses all their points first loses the game. the only meaningful way to differentiate it beyond that is how those boxes/spaces are made.

So it reduces us down to Pot (only access to an untechable airgrab), striking characters (the box is placed in a specific place relative to the placer but does not meaningfully move), and projectile characters (as before, but the box moves a lot, though in a predictable way), and HC (places the box relative to you rather than relative to himself) and maybe Test (projectile, but the motion is tracking or at least not completely set)

You have this all-rounder with no weaknesses, strong tools for every situation, and some situationally fucked up mix and interactions... and he's not even in contention for being a top tier, because he doesn't just automatically shut down your ability to play the game by existing, doesn't take off 70% from any mix, and doesn't have loopable offense that's either safe or can only be punished with throws and low damage combos, his only free pressure reset is Fondue Curve and if your opponent sees it coming they get a free CH combo of their choosing.

I feel like there should be a general hitbox rework because it really feels like half the cast follows a different design philosophy than the rest. This isn't even about the characters being good or bad, Sin had the same issues when he was bottom tier as he does right now with the hitboxes and so do Anji, Ky, Elphelt but not Nago, Slayer or Johnny for example. The way some hitboxes are just shaped, when they become active and how they extend through the active frames just feel inconsistent as fuck

His conversions were buffed so much, that was the main reason he had no damage in the older versions but he's absolutely not low damage anymore. Even a simple anti air 5K can lead into 40% and a wall break, getting a hammer or the weights which are all really common on screen give you the ability to convert off of anything.
He also always had good buttons by themselves which just weren't up to par because of the said conversion issues.
The guy can have two pseudo bursts active without any meter on the screen on top of his range meaning it's harder to get good combos on him so his survival is also good.
TL;DR yeah I agree, he's fucking good this patch.

What method does Daisuke use to decide whether a Dipper can combo or not. They're all dishonest moves that go over half screen and hit low real fast, but some combo and other's just don't.
Stun dipper doesn't combo.
Gun dipper doesn't combo.
Fujin dipper combos.

It doesn't feel like the criteria even makes sense, since Anji and Nago are both flat out higher damage characters than Ky and also have safer dippers.
