Are monsters still able to absorb human souls in Deltarune like they were able to in Undertale? Maybe thats the end goal of Snowgrave, for Noelle to consume us and take us into their body as a new borderline god in terms of power

I think the point of Snowgrave is to save Dess at expence of everything else. Noelle is braindead and is "used up", Susie and Ralsei are backstabbed, festival is turned into a tragedy, (You) are "used up"...
Snowgrave "breaks" the world by breaking the prophecy. (You) think that's the only way to save Dess from the depths of code she's stuck in. To pull her out of the cracks of the broken world.
Likely in Neutral Ending we'll never know about what happened to Dess. Only in Snowgrave Ending and Secret Ending.

After replaying the chapters I think I have a vague idea what'll happen in Chapter 5.
The field of gold and pink, charred
in an inferno of jealousy. I believe 5 will be the "end of an arc" due to the fact it was going to be bundled with 3/4 - so things will become dire and serious here. Either The Knight or Asgore who's been convince by the Knight will open a Dark Fountain in the middle of the Festival as an attempt to prove his innocence or truth of whatever he's been working on in his hidden room. We'll see Dark World versions of a lot of Lightners, and Noelle will be a party member again. Carol will likely be the main antagonist since she is funding and supporting Asgore's crazy habits because she's working with the Knight, and will probably have a Dark World form kind of like the White Witch from Narnia. The festival itself will feature the colors pink and gold heavily which will hint at the true nature of FRIEND who will be the holder of the final shadow crystal.

The first chapter of Deltarune was released in 2018, and there are still more to come. But speeding to a quick ending is not the point.

In groups of three, the characters in Deltarune set forth to explore a universe spun off from Undertale, a 2015 game that sold millions.

The battlefield reeks of “dusty mustard.” A fanged, freckled character threatens to bite off someone’s face. Coat racks talk, and you’re called a thief when you purchase something from a store. Such is the topsy-turvy world of Deltarune.

This stunningly imaginative role-playing adventure is perhaps the most lo-fi of the earliest releases for the Nintendo Switch 2. But through four expansive and generous episodes — two of them newly published, the others from 2018 and 2021 — Deltarune proves to be the most surprisingly wonderful of those games.

Very early on, as a group of lovable misfits tread through the darkness to bring balance back to their world, the question one could ask is, How could these “prophesied heroes” save anything, even themselves? Perhaps that feeling of doubt surfaces because the pixel artwork is reminiscent of 1980s Atari visuals instead of the assertively modern graphics of, say, Mario Kart World.

But Deltarune’s art style is a trick. Simplicity makes these sprites more endearing, more seemingly real. This merry merging of computer dots transforms into beings who are edgy, flirty and multifaceted. The lovably punky human-monster Susie, the one who threatens to bite faces, ultimately opens their heart to another character. Kris, their face partly hidden by strands of hair, is the silent, introverted teen hero who leads the way. But Kris has something of a dark side, too.

That variety continues to hit home in Deltarune (an anagram of Undertale). Yes, a sword can kill enemies during turn-based battle. But putting foes to sleep and pacifying them is not only less cruel. It’s much more satisfying.

Deltarune spans the ages of animation past. While it’s clear that The Legend of Zelda and Pokémon are influences, another inspiration is decades older. When Kris dutifully leads their party members through a church past ghostly, praying angels with antlers, they move in single file with short, dutiful steps, like Linuses or Lucys from a “Peanuts” cartoon.

The simplicity of Deltarune’s art style makes the sprites more endearing, more seemingly real.

Some of the game’s writing could be pared down to be clearer and, especially, grammatically correct. But it’s the riffing, improvisation and satire that allow for a deeper attachment to the characters.

Take the complex slide puzzle in a library-themed maze that involves playing pianos and moving shelves. At one point among the tomes, you’ll read perfectly nerdy puns about the Dewey Decimal System. Elsewhere, Noelle Holiday, Kris’s reindeer-inspired childhood friend, lives in a mansion that’s a twisted homage to Christmas.

The soundtrack, more than 150 pieces composed by Fox, is remarkably diverse. A slightly unsettling, upbeat theme plays as the trio competes in a game show. At another point, a samba inspires real-life toe-tapping. On the game save screen, three repeated notes are spot on. They sound like the foreboding groaning in Einstürzende Neubauten’s classic “Stahlmusik.”

Speeding through Deltarune to a quick ending is not the point. It’s meant to be enjoyed gradually, a trip along startling roads less traveled with your virtual friends. Moving through life with Susie and Kris recalls teenage adventures. They’re full of abandon and occasional recklessness, if not supernatural moments of dread. To absorb the experience with each of the five senses is to satisfy every part of the mind.

It took Fox nearly 10 years to make four of the seven episodes he has promised. It may take another decade to complete the series. But spending a full week with this masterpiece is nothing short of a blessing.

I never really grasped that Ralsei is telling us to close our eyes so The Soul can go do something else while he talks to Kris.

I think this makes Ralsei WAY more sus than we know because he's the ONLY character besides the phone caller/knight that knows Kris has The Soul inside of him.

It also mentions that Toriel's the only one who's taken the book out, and that it was years prior. This and the presence of "giant human movies" makes me wonder if maybe humans used to exist but somehow just miraculously disappeared. The Dark World is very game-like AND dream-like. So "Flirt" is an option that was added because SOUL remembers Undertale's "Flirt" act. But neither Kris nor SOUL actually have skills to pull it off, the dark world irself takes care of that, because it's dream-y and game-y.

i still find it so fascinating how so many people seem to know of much older influences and newer ones like this game in and of itself but COMPLETELY missed the coolest shit ever that this game was actually based on, not 80s atari games or peanuts but 90s badass jrpgs, knowing not everyone grew up with them like me or even played them later is so fuckin sad man they're like core essentials and amazing experiences but they didn't stick in referencable pop culture like stuff that came before or after even if so many hyper-popular more recent indie ventures are directly or very heavily inspired by them
