You should ask their general, but probably Shogun 2. It's the most straightforward of the lot, since all clans are similar, so you'll rarely go "wait, what is this unit?".

Alot of people sleep on Atilla. Arguably one of the best modding communities across any of the games in terms of realistic historical reskins and different time periods. Mechanically its pretty straightforward for someone who has never played total war. The horde and raising mechanics are also pretty fun. Being the Huns and destroying every settlement on the map is fun. Shogun 2 is also a classic like the other anon mentioned. I've played each for over 1k hours.
Anonymous No.528164132 >>528168191
>>528124170
For the best mods, Medieval 2 Kingdoms. Mechanically, Shogun 2 for an introduction to Total War. Vanilla Shogun 2, the DLCs are a lot tougher, with agents being more relevant and all.
Otherwise, depends if you're a fantasy enjoyer, or a history buff.

I have but maybe not as many times as you'd think. I dont really care much about the victory parameters the game sets. Sometimes just getting one island and turning it into a powerhouse is enough for me.

Anonymous No.528169512

Yeah I cant blame you. The victory parameters are totally arbitrary and I dont find it fun to mold my entire strategy around holding a few random locations the game tells me to. Plus for some factions it just gets so fucking tedious to try. I've never beaten a campaign in Empire or 3 Kingdoms.

I started playing the base version of Stellaris for the first time today, it's fairly enjoyable but the one thing that bothers me is I will control every system of another faction and they are just idly at war with me doing nothing, but I still have to wait for influence points for claims, which seems really broken. Is there a DLC that fixes this or am I missing something? They don't want to give up either except for the claims I've made. Does Apocalypse / Federations / Nemesis / Overlord fix this?
Anonymous No.528177317
>>528174607
DaC has more factions and more things in general, but it does have some weird balancing things and scripts that might spawn armies out of ass for AI if it's doing poorly against the player, so you might want to look into disabling them. Maybe total war center website forum thread about DaC will have more info, or their discord or whatever the fuck they are using these days.
It has been years since I played DaC, and probably a decade since I played original Third Age.

In my highly biased opinion, Rise of the Empire is best.
It has good art style (unlike the one that came after it), has simple combat (unlike the game that came before it, also known as Heritage of kings, aka "we want the Age of empires audience"- game), and its supply lines, while sufficiently complicated, aren't full on autismo mode like some of the other games in the series.

Starting to get the hang of this game. Simply put, you don't play it like you'd play They Are Billions, you're meant to move around a lot, and get smart with your units positioning so that the enemy artillery is in range of your archers.
Bit too much micromanagement, though. It's very difficult to deal with said artillery, they kill most of your units in two hits, and instantly scare them (-50% movement speed and -50% damage).

Beating the shit or scamming your neighbors early to vassalize them would be necessary though
You want others shipping you resources to make up for being one planet and vassal terms do that best
Being a megacorp can help a lot. Worker Cooperative alone can help you make up for basic resource deficits
For your capital system, it's up to whether you're going to settle on a single bigass world to make a ecumenopolis, bother with a starting ocean paradise world to expand with ice chunks first, or go with a ringworld start challenge

Machine age adds both powerful upgrades and flavor for your machines and cyborgs, also Cosmogenesis is a crisis path trying more than once
Cosmic storms should be one of your last grabs if you're not getting a bundle with it.
Cosmic storms add space weather flavor, but they're mostly annoying more than any help. The benefits they can sometimes leave behind are often too random to plan entire planet economies around
