There is no explicit in-game material that expresses romance between Shadow or Maria and the games go as far as to contradict it with an explicit label of it's own since 20 years ago before Sonic 06. If SOJ, Maekawa and the other staff wanted them to be a pure sweet hearted romance in their characters within the games canon, they should have wrote it into the games when they had that chance. But they didn't. They instead explicitly wrote them to be siblings and maintained that stance in SXSG regardless of what you feel about them. That is simply official.

It started in Sonic Chronicles back in 2008, but that game's considered explicitly non-canon now. There haven't been many good interior shots of Tails' workshop outside of Sonic Boom games, which don't have the seedling, but it appeared in Sonic Channel artwork around the time that the last season finally aired in Japan (basically, Cosmo's season was mostly made as an encore for the French and American markets, and the Japanese version more or less existed in bootleg form until they decided to air it to promote the first Paramount movie). Some fans take it to mean some version of the Metarex arc happened in game canon, some fans take it as just a visual easter egg.

The Adventure 1 & 2 adaptations draw from a -lot- of material that ultimately went unused in the games. We know about some of it due to dataminers finding dummied-out data (the name of Amy's birdie, several deleted SA2 voicelines), and some of it is theoretical dropped plotpoints we can guess at (some material alluded to in Japanese guidebook, like the implication that the Shadow in SA2 might not be the actual Shadow, which wad replaced by the android subplot).
Some people think Series 2/Season 3 drew from canned material for Shadow 05 or Sonic 06.

I like virtually any ship where Shadow is in-character. Could be Shadouge or Shadamy or anything else. But if you need to remove basic character traits in order for your ship/fanart/scenario to work, I don't want to look at it. I want to see Shadow, not some generic chad wearing a Shadow meatsuit. This goes for the rest of the characters as well to a lesser degree.
I like all of the ships frequently endorsed by SoJ, or at the very least think of them as the default. Sonamy, Silvaze, Knuxouge, even Tailsmo.
As for more niche ships, Sonaze, Barkamy, Sonknux, and Knuxaze are neat and I enjoy seeing those.
I don't have many ships I outright hate no matter what, except for IDW ships because IDW is a plague. Just keep them IC and you're good.

They *were* the default. When I was little, at least. It's shifted somewhat, Shadouge gets more shipbait than Knuxouge does nowadays, but it's also one-sided shipbait where Shadow doesn't reciprocate. Not that that couldn't change one day, but they're static mascot characters in a sterilized "no romance" kids franchise so I wouldn't get my hopes up any.
I personally see Sonamy, Shadria, Silvaze, Knuxouge, Tailsmo, Vectnilla as the SOJ-approved ships. Shadouge and Sonaze have some basis but not enough to compete with Sonamy/Shadria/Sonamy.

Honestly, that’s something I’ve been asking myself for a while. I don’t like attaching an OC too close to the source material to the point where they feel like a Mary Sue insert just made for RP with the creator’s favorite character, but I also want there to be enough of a connection to justify putting said character into that world. I gotta strike a balance.

For me, Woe at least knows of the group and their whole escapades, but she hasn’t met or seen any of them. I’d maybe think about adding more to that, but I don’t want it to feel stapled on if you get what I mean.

I like the idea of Surge and Kit's "Knuckles" character to be the most moral of the three, and the idea of Surge and Kit trying to goad him into helping them with shit because "You're basically one of us" is neat. You could do some stuff with Surge and Kit questioning if they're being too manipulative since they'd obviously hate the idea of being anything like Starline, but the idea of a rough and tumble goon who helps Surge and Kit keep their vigilante stuff on track is cool.
