Infernus is a gimmick character that has lower direct damage because of his fire buildup passive. Spirit (the purple items) make abilities and passives deal more damage.
Mirage or Geist might be better if you just want to shoot at people's heads, but you're probably feeling weaker because the enemy has more souls than you.

I fell off all the way from Emissary to Arcanist in less than 2 months. Before that I started on Archon and fell to Emissary, which I felt it was fair since Archon felt a bit above my own skill, especially since I was relatively new. Then I felt the games were more balanced and I could hold on my own pretty well and stayed there up until recently with no issue. The problem with gun is that the best users of gun builds have traditional ad carry levels of damage without any of the traditional MOBA drawbacks that come with it.
