the more 'cord tries to force bosci the more the thread fights against it, love it

Hypothetical situation, what do (you) do?

Day 21 on a Thread for Project C-Con โ "Unexpected Breakthrough" Edition
Journal logs are being posted into /agdg/ daily.
Made okay progress tonight working on C-Con โ all possible because I donโt have a shift at work tomorrow, so we should be alright pulling off a dev-marathon tomorrow too.
Anyway, today was really cool in that Iโm really digging this C++ German guy tutorial, itโs unlike any other course Iโve done. He sort of just rambles to himself and doesnโt hold your hand, uses key-binds without even telling you, does sleight-of-hand stuff accidentally... so honestly, you end up learning things on your own while following along as best you can. Legit a learning curve but for someoneโs teaching style, somehow.
Whatโs awesome is weโve gotten to a part where weโve instantiated and defined basic movement using C++, and itโs exactly what Iโve been looking for. Default UE5 movement feels frictionless; which makes you slide around, sluggish, realistic, and doesnโt appeal to my taste or what C-Conโs movement will be in the far future. Working in C++, though, I basically programmed basic movement from zero, which means of course instantaneous, with no sort of inertia, which is exactly what I've been looking for.
Iโll definitely be bookmarking this knowledge for later when I eventually make my first real custom system on my own: a basic third-person character controller from scratch.
Anyways see you in the next log tomorrow, goodnight Anon.
What is Project C-Con?

I don't expect Ctesiphon to sell like hotcakes, I just want it OUT so I can move on to something else with a full release under my belt.
If you want my cope, the game has already gotten me a job twice. So if you credit that, it is already earning me six figures AUD a year.
>>528245108wtfwtf based??

is your 6 fig job harder or easier than making your game?
>>528246042Chicken guy right? My man!
It's like we're already so far from everything that we're used to doing it all ourselves.
>>528246224Way harder because I have to read other people's code all the time. And due to churn at corporate clients, we often can't ask the person who wrote it because they usually don't work there anymore.
>>528246042Didn't reply to the other part: did this offer include an IP clause meaning they would have owned your game? Because I wouldn't have taken it either. I make a point of asking in the interview and try not to apply for actual "gaming" jobs.

AI is great for both retard devs and pros alike. I use it every day!
When it comes to youtubers I don't think I've ever found a channel that consistently makes good content. I feel like most of them don't actually know what they're doing. Which leads to poor implementations and the inability to go in-depth on concepts.
>godot is close to 4.5
>still feels like a 4.1
the last 4 releases are nothing but bugfixes for shit they broke when switching to 4.x, drawcalls on tilemaps are just getting fixed in 4.5, this is mad
I almost posted progress, phew that was close.
>>528251797You can find all the information you need online and, assuming you know basic algebra and high-school math in general, you'll be fine.
Paid courses are only good if they provide you with some form of certification.
>>528250757Not a virus. Also please don't embed scripts into scenes. You have one embedded into "monke run.tscn". It's just not a good thing to do.
>>528252130>the last 4 releases are nothing but bugfixesNah they added Jolt as a module in the engine which is the best thing ever. And they have been improving the shader compiling situation. GDScript traits will most likely be in 4.6 as well which will be epic

>>5282498682D is pretty good, has a solid of content and is well structured.
3D is lacking in content at the moment and not worth it if you're tight on money.
It's nothing you can't learn for free, you're paying for a structured course with exercises and the "workbooks" with a demo scene that you build on over the course of a module.
A lot of youtube tutorials are dogshit timesink grifts that won't leave you with any skills. Most of the learning you need to do is stuff you'll need to figure out solo by trying, but GDquest at least pushes you in that direction.
>>528253274Use procedural generation.
>>528253494Forgot to add, it being text based is the biggest draw compared to youtube, it's so much quicker to read each lesson than sit through a 20m-2hour video, then having to seek back through it or pause it every 20 seconds to get the info you need etc.

I'm trying to duck code the method in the object as a generic "interact" function, would it be easier instead to check for specific interaction objects to trigger a state change?

pro: no sunk cost fallacy and you'll work 6 months on a new project instead of trying 6 months to make the old one work.
con: you might not know that the project you work on is shit right now, but might become really cool when you keep working on it.
nevertheless, i think the real problem is identity issues. if you know for certain who you are and what you want, then you cannot project hop.
if you listen to rap music everyday for 10 years, then you just know rap is the right genre for you. you don't need to genre-hop. same for gamedev.
identity trumps everything in terms of consistency, that's why people shill for nationalism and traditions.
i think internet destroys identity, because there's so much random content that makes your brain skip between contexts. everytime it starts to build an identity it immediately quits again.
or maybe our identity is a taboo. since we are here on 4chan we are open to rekt videos, porn, racism, bullying etc. - maybe the game we should make wouldn't even be allowed on steam. maybe we are psychos and we don't want to show our true colors in our game.

>>528283949What a strange post
>>528284505I hate the concept of difficulty selection. How do I plan to handle casuals you ask?

You can use cheatcodes to make the game easier
>>528284618i should've asked chatgpt before posting it. it's better to make it difficult at first then toning it down because it allows you to test mechanics to the fullest and find out what would frustrate the player.
it's more abstract when it comes to turn based games where damage avoidance isn't always guaranteed so i should've specified that.
>>528278770Keep struggling fren
>>528284830I still hate difficulty selection. If you are adding it to your game, make sure to actually mark the "intended" difficulty according to you. I hate when I have to dig through forums to figure out what difficulty is a game designed around, and what are added later as a hack.
>>528285193my game will just have one difficulty with options to cheese the game
no one really mentions this but back then you didn't have to compete with live service and mobile games that were designed to keep players playing one game forever.

They're just completely lolrandom. they're just inserting goto into random scenarios, often straight up replacing the original character with goto and not modifying the joke whatsoever
im starting to think that bocchi is some kinda meaningless brainrot, and that goto has no personality or identifiable traits that would facilitate creation of humorous content. It's almost like they WANT to reference bocchi, but there's NOTHING to reference, so the end result is just "look it's an image of goto and she's uhhh basically not doing anything at all"

i'm making a multiplayer game
>>528285494The people who play one game forever are actually very open to new games. They just want the game to be good. I play like 2 games a year on average. One of them was Indie, Stardew, the other was from a AA studio, Helldivers. I'm playing D4 now just out of respect for what the series once was. But it's shit for the most part. If you can't beat AAA in terms of fun, you have an issue. Now really is the time of Indies. We can make far larger indie games than the past, and AAA literally cannot make a good game as a result of western business law, western philosophical under pinning's being broken, and anyone with a clue has pretty much retired or will never reach management due to skin color and gender identity.
>>528286196me too. im making a multiplayer game as a single person

But I already work with an artist, allowing for twice the game to be made than if I did it myself. Even Stardew was likely held back dramatically by Eric making all the music and art. There's actually not much to do other than farm and a few mini games.
>even if i worked for 4 years and the game was a flop, I would have learned so much, I would have grown as a person and I would have the dignity of like, I had finished a project and I feel that is important too and that can, you know... if you keep that going, eventually, you're really increasing your chances of something happening... it's better than doing nothing!

>>528286316how does an indie making a turn based game compete with the likes of gachas with their giant budgets and player retention tactics?
>>528286464>Even Stardew was likely held back dramatically by Eric making all the music and art. There's actually not much to do other than farm and a few mini games. It's very telling that the main area of the game where he did contract help (getting hired testers to refine the addiction loops) was probably the most key part to Stardew's success.
Also, he sort of did have help on the art. He refuses to credit them because he threw out the contractor-made assets and replaced them all with his own, but his art style would have been drastically different if he did not have those contractor-made assets as a reference. The huge style changes that can be seen in the "iteration timeline" pictures are due to switching his style to imitate the contractor-made references.
>>528286464>Even Stardew was likely held back dramatically by Eric making all the music and art. There's actually not much to do other than farm and a few mini games.Disgusting take. Hopefully bait

>>528286550>if you keep that going, eventually, you're really increasing your chances of something happening... it's better than doing nothing! This is an incredibly incorrect and dangerous mindset because it ignores opportunity cost. The alternative to wasting your time on a doomed project is not "doing nothing," the alternative is doing something that will actually succeed.
Imagine if he actually had wasted 4 years making something else instead of Stardew. The opportunity cost of that disastrous decision would be all the profits of Stardew.
>>528287092It's not bait, it's a warning to the Barone-worshipping idiots on agdg who insist on doing everything solo "because Barone did" when even Barone didn't actually do everything solo.

>>528286920I'm not saying it was a bad choice to handcraft the whole game. >>528288294A game can worse in many areas if it does one or more new things very well. Helldivers is an example. No campaign. Repetitive missions. Buggy. Yet, very successful. Truly dynamic battles with dynamic player abilities and many possible player builds took 3rd person shooters to new exciting heights. In many ways a game like Gears of War was far better. But Gears didn't have that dynamic combat. Helldivers was also pro fascism, and if you can squeeze that into your game without being canceled that's like a cheat code to winning.

>>528291106Idk how resolution really works either. I've just been starting my game and changing resolution to see how it looks, and then working with chat gpt to improve it. Between that, and using vertical and horizontal groupings, I seem to be making progress. But idk what I'm doing and my unity is super fucking outdated so who knows if what I'm doing even exists in the new versions.
At the end of the day, does it really matter how many people made a game. Obviously it's easier to make a game if there are more people. Everyone who made a very successful game at some point received and accepted help in some form.
It's dumb to have this ideal that 'no one touches my game but me'. Yes some people think that's how successful solodev games get made so the misconception is frustrating. But let's just accept the reality that 'solodevs' start the project on their own, and as development accelerates they accept help.
It's less about how many hands touched the game and more about the creation process.

Maybe the Unabomber was right...
>>528293245He was right in his observations, but his methods to attempt to change the situation were wrong, and he admitted as such later in life.
Ok I'm stuck on a game design problem.
I'm working to get the Vamps (humanoid) form into my game. So the question is: what gameplay purpose is there for transforming?
I'd like to implement it so that when you take damage or mess up, you transform back to the Vamps form where you're more vulnerable and less mobile. Then you have to survive in that state until you regain the energy to transform back.
As I write this out, I'm worried it won't be fun. Like if you crash into a building with no NPCs around, you transform back into Vamps form, can't do much, and are forced to wait until you can get back to Batty form to play the game. Maybe all the NPCs are alerted to your presence when you go to Vamps form?
Anyways... what I actually meant to write about here was figuring out when the player is transformed into Vamps form. I shouldn't do it every time the player takes damage, it would be too punishing. So I was thinking you get three 'lives' and when you take damage three times you revert to Vamps form.
But then I'd have a 'lives' system on top of the red orb HP system, wouldn't that be confusing?
The alternative is you transform back to Vamps upon losing all your red orb blood energy, and being in Vamps form replenishes it. But that means I remove the lose condition. Would that be bad? Do games need a lose condition? It would break my endless levels but no one likes those anyways.
>>528293429Yet his methods brought attention to the issue and popularized his manifesto across the world more than asking nicely would have ever done.

>>528293467>Do games need a lose condition? If you have some sort of progression system, failing to progress is already a lose condition.

>>528295324Get married, have kids, and hope they turn out more talented than me
>>528295502you could have AI guide you through Unity as you piece it together, but that's about as close as you can get right now
>>528293801>If you have some sort of progression systemMy game has barely anything really, but maybe someday it will
>>528294132That's a good thought. I think it may come down to the balance of what's 'fun'. If transforming to Vamps is a 'punishment' for making mistakes, does that mean it needs to be less 'fun' than Batty form? What if it's more fun?
>didn't read the last paragraph sorryWell what you missed is I'm not seeing this as a 'make or break' scenario. You get to play forever and you are just put in the cuck form for messing up and then in that form you get your energy back to go to the effective form.
But yeah, in general everything has to be fun. there has to be satisfaction to be found in any part of the gameplay.
>>528294376I hate AI, it was predictably superficially helpful but contentless. The only thing it said that got me thinking was you could still die in Vamps form. I could do that without the blood energy if the NPCs got enough hits on Vamps or trapped her. Or I could have a line on the orb, so you have a transform line and then full depletion is dead?
>>528295502i make music for a decade and i made some instrumental music with ai (not the slop normies create) and it sounded better than everything i ever composed. it's kinda sad.
it's not even so much about the melody, it's that the sound-design of what ai generates is far more rich. it would take so much tweaking and automation with synthesizers to get that sound, it'd take months...

I do feel discovering realism, after almost 20 years of ignoring it, has been the biggest mental shift I've had in all my years of drawing and painting from anime.
It's like when bruce lee realized that all the eastern traditions are nothing more than BS when compared to western fighting traditions.
And I don't mean I never understood that I needed to learn realism, but I had the mistaken assumption that realism was nothing more than a slower version of photography.
And while It is a slower version of photography, is not just a mere xerox copy of nature.
Realism is not photorealism, like all the videos of faggots painting hyperrealistic portraits of will smith on youtube,

Then I might add a little bounce when she first hits the ground.
I'm thinking the humans will use this as their time to fight back, so they'll all run over to where she fell and try to kick her while she's down.
It will all hopefully come off as slapstick and funny

if the game protagonist looks like this - i don't want to play it
why people suddenly making lots of games where protagonist is a young girl wearing robe/poncho/cape with some tribal stuff?
also it's isometric and she teleporting. there is a rock-magic or stuff like that

i feel like i'm falling in love with isometric 2D. it's like 3D, but you don't have to care about triangle count or anti-aliasing or texturing or any of that stuff. also it's easier on the eyes than 3D.
the only thing scaring me about isometric 2D is technical difficulties like depth sorting.

>>528296858Every game needs yuri.
you aren't into gamedev because you want to make it. you are into gamedev because it's so hard to make it that you have an infinite challenge. it's like a hardcore game with infinite replayability. that's why you are into gamedev.
you enjoy complaining every day about how hard it is. just like league of legends players love to complain about the game every day and they still keep playing. you do not actually want to reach the goal, you love the constant tension and drama around it.

>>528304598It takes a lot of time to make 25 hours of content.
If your goal is something like FFI you could finish that in a year.
>>528304781Making games is easy though?
>>528304598You need a significant amount of content, writing and there's a lot of system design work to do, even when you're retooling stuff that comes with RPG maker. That's excluding the asset work.
A short action game clocks in at less than 10 hours of content, a short RPG clocks in at 30.
