Okay so i started and finished this game today.
I went in blind, other than hearing that this game has wincest and canibalism
I really liked it, i loved how shit got worse for the two over time, with canibalism for survival making sense giving their situation, then murder to escape captors and the hitman being a necessary evil. I was totally on board with it all, it was really engaging, humorous and I loved the writing and characters. Even with Andrew joining Ashley to get their parents sacrificed, it felt like a gradual increase to their crimes, and made sense as they wanted to survive after being abandoned by everybody and their mental state taking a heavy toll. Like it makes sense why they ended up getting so fucked up as they were a product of their own circumstances. The comedy was pretty decent too, even if it flip-flopped between disney-humor and adult-humor at times.
That said, episode 3 was bad.
It felt like they just killed and sacrificed souls for humor or edge. Like with the campers or the kid that wanted to pass his test. Rather than doing this shit for genuine reasons like survival.
The shit in the other world with the entity felt out of place and they're just solving puzzles for the sake of hearing some more backstory or lore. The puzzles aren't even hard or necessary like to do with the story, they're just there.
It loses that human connection that the first 2 chapters did; the relationships, urgency of being on the run, and emotional weight, it just feels lost. Yeah I know they can't stay in the spirit world forever, it's based off the decay route, there's bickering but it felt like a complete tonal dissonance from everything built up. I don't mind them becoming evil or expanding the lore more but, it's like somebody else wrote it and wanted to dump you with exposition with some easy puzzles to break it up.
Still I like the game.
I'd give the first 2 episodes an 8/10 and the third one a 6/10.

This isn't because plot is what made the game notable, but the situations it set up were fairly seemless and made for an intuitively smooth progression of their characters. Cannibalism followed by killing a guard, followed by an earnest attempt to escape, and all the crimes that follow felt so natural- as oppose to: almost getting caught at the gas station, then having a dream, then trying to sacrifice random campers, then followed by either working for a demon or their relationship cracking. It just felt so choppy, and was made really unbearable by the god-awful pacing besides SnS. the start of the chapter being an hour-long flashback with no connection to chapter 2's end, and Decaying Along having a mind-numbingly boring last hour or so. Solving puzzles that rarely connect to anything in the present, and flashbacks that are just uninteresting in comparison to what came before. The only truly great flashbacks were those about the incident and I guess Andy being in the demon realm. Everything else was such a brake on what has been a perpetually spiraling situation with demons- especially in the cliffhanger where the demons take center-stage. These issues were never a problem in chapter 1, and although there was probably a trace of them with chapter 2, it was easy to look past. Chapter 3 just felt so bloated.
I like how Andrew inherited Renee's cold heart and Douglas spineless tendencies while Ashley inherited Douglas' inner passion and Renee's manipulativeness

I don't know why people are complaining about the flashbacks. Sure the story already tells you some details but it's another thing to actually show you what it's like to really demonstrate it. You know show don't tell. Like how much of how neglectful and abusive parents the parents where shown in episodes 1 and 2 vs 3? Like before 3 it was like an optional scene that shown that no one visits Ashley's birthdays besides Andrew, some symbolism with the puzzles in Burial with Ashley, Renee being a cunt to her kids after they return to her house and a lot of evidence pointing to how the parents were complacent with sending their kids to die in the quarantine, but the latter two points aren't really related to how they were treated as kids.
Meanwhile episode 3 goes more in depth with how neglectful they were BEFORE the quarantine, like Renee being abusive to Andrew, Renee ignoring Ashley's attempt of attention with her confessing murder, Renee just letting Ashley throw her life away.

I haven't really experienced a lot of stories that made me feel the feelings it made me feel with how disturbing and depressing SnS was and the level of hopelessness it has. And I like the various characterization it further shown. Before chapter 3 I thought this game was just merely good and had neat writing but nothing too groundbreaking, but 3 reaches even higher highs than the previous episodes that it earned its spot on my most favourite game story imo. That's why I strongly disagree with the people that say 3 was inferior to the previous two chapters.

I think it's understandable that is by far the most dramatic turn that the game could have, after all, the siblings are confronting their own problems, at the same time that they conflict with each other, unable to trust or confide fully with one another. Maybe in Burial, where this trust is not severed as much, the sense of adventure from earlier chapters will be regained due to be more oriented to go places instead of the abstract realms. Decay seems like the dramatic, most emotional intense route, while Burial may be the most lighthearted, outgoing one, but it's just a guess.
