Okay so i started and finished this game today.
I went in blind, other than hearing that this game has wincest and canibalism


I really liked it, i loved how shit got worse for the two over time, with canibalism for survival making sense giving their situation, then murder to escape captors and the hitman being a necessary evil. I was totally on board with it all, it was really engaging, humorous and I loved the writing and characters. Even with Andrew joining Ashley to get their parents sacrificed, it felt like a gradual increase to their crimes, and made sense as they wanted to survive after being abandoned by everybody and their mental state taking a heavy toll. Like it makes sense why they ended up getting so fucked up as they were a product of their own circumstances. The comedy was pretty decent too, even if it flip-flopped between disney-humor and adult-humor at times.

That said, episode 3 was bad.
It felt like they just killed and sacrificed souls for humor or edge. Like with the campers or the kid that wanted to pass his test. Rather than doing this shit for genuine reasons like survival.
The shit in the other world with the entity felt out of place and they're just solving puzzles for the sake of hearing some more backstory or lore. The puzzles aren't even hard or necessary like to do with the story, they're just there.

It loses that human connection that the first 2 chapters did; the relationships, urgency of being on the run, and emotional weight, it just feels lost. Yeah I know they can't stay in the spirit world forever, it's based off the decay route, there's bickering but it felt like a complete tonal dissonance from everything built up. I don't mind them becoming evil or expanding the lore more but, it's like somebody else wrote it and wanted to dump you with exposition with some easy puzzles to break it up.


Still I like the game.
I'd give the first 2 episodes an 8/10 and the third one a 6/10.

Glad I wasn't the only one, it really felt like it was spinning its wheels with regard to plot by chapter 3. Chapter 1 is an easy, sinple conflict of the quarantine and subsequent break-out. Chapter 2 is when demon shenanigans get really going, and the parent's getting sacrificied organically ties in when accounting for their character and motivations. Chapter 3 is just so disjointed, like I'm honestly shocked at how little people discuss how sloppily put together it is. I mean, is there even a plot in either SnS or Decaying Along? They just kind of fuck up at the campsite, and are constantly just reacting to each other, rarely to the outside world. This isn't because plot is what made the game notable, but the situations it set up were fairly seemless and made for an intuitively smooth progression of their characters. Cannibalism followed by killing a guard, followed by an earnest attempt to escape, and all the crimes that follow felt so natural- as oppose to: almost getting caught at the gas station, then having a dream, then trying to sacrifice random campers, then followed by either working for a demon or their relationship cracking. It just felt so choppy, and was made really unbearable by the god-awful pacing besides SnS. the start of the chapter being an hour-long flashback with no connection to chapter 2's end, and Decaying Along having a mind-numbingly boring last hour or so. Solving puzzles that rarely connect to anything in the present, and flashbacks that are just uninteresting in comparison to what came before. The only truly great flashbacks were those about the incident and I guess Andy being in the demon realm. Everything else was such a brake on what has been a perpetually spiraling situation with demons- especially in the cliffhanger where the demons take center-stage. These issues were never a problem in chapter 1, and although there was probably a trace of them with chapter 2, it was easy to look past. Chapter 3 just felt so bloated.

I kind of agree. For me Decaying Along feels almost like an interlude that contextualizes their character arcs and sets up all the payoffs that will come in Episode 4. The only thing that was resolved in DA was the phone call burning the bridge with Julia once and for all, and that was at the very beginning in an optional scene.

This is probably one of the worst takes I've seen because I feel like you actually believe that. The side routes take advantage of the medium by presenting "what-ifs" that are canon in the sense they're in-character explorations of different sides of their personalities. If it were a VN it would be "you made the wrong choices, you die loser." If it were a book it'd be one linear story. Nemlei is taking advantage of the medium to flesh out the characters further, and saying it's "bloat" is fucking heretical.
