Godot had two big innovations as a general purpose engine:
- gdscript being an interpreted, dynamically typed language that can call pre-compiled code
- the Node abstraction over the more complex, but still accessible, server functionality.
Most game engines two layers, a gory 'core' that's hyper-optimized and does the heavy processing like Rendering and Networking, and a softer 'shell' which allows you to write looser, easily changed scripts that call the gory core.
This is the reason Python was so successful, it provided the niceties of a programming language: complex data types, control flow, packaging, while still allowing you to call the pre-compiled Fortran or C code without having to do complex memory management or deal with pedantic type systems.
And per abstraction, many language libraries provide two interfaces: the meta-programming one that will generate boiler-plate code for you based on things like annotations and the more specific underlying code you can access if you need it. Godot Nodes and Servers are an example of this.
Unity fails in this regard by trying to use a statically-typed, 'compiled-ish' language that is C# for scripting and having an abstraction over core functionality that isn't immediately obvious. Unreal Blueprints are slightly better in this regard, but I think that visual scripting isn't expressive enough and is better suited for things like programming lab equipment rather then trying to make something so complex as a game, although a sprinkling of it in things like animation trees and state machines isn't so bad.

i think the only viable path as a solodev is to become a prototype dev. like, make something cool first and if it really hits the right spots, you absolutely need to make a kickstarter. and then, if the kickstarter is a success, you need to hire 1-2 artists fulltime.

Threadly reminder that even gamedev success can be a trap.
Imagine your game earns you 10 years of income. Would you quit your job and start making games full time? If so, you'd have fallen into the same trap I did.
The crux of the trap is the time you spend as a gamedev will count against you if ever need to get a job again. And the ironic thing is the more successful you are, the more dangerous the trap will be unless you earn enough money to never need a job again.
The only way full-time gamedev would be sustainable is if your games keep earning you at least a year of expenses for every year worked... until you're literally 75. And I do mean literally. When you're 72, you'll need to sit down and make a game that earns you 3 years of expenses. Anything short of that and you'll eventually run out of money. And when you do, you'd have been 10-15-20 years out of the job market and good luck getting a job with an employment gap that big.
When you run out of money, it can take as little as a couple of months for your life to be ruined. That's what happened to me. I found myself broke at 45 and no job for the past 15 years except making games. And I'm looking at 30 more years of having to survive. I can't get job interviews, I can't afford to keep working on games, and I'm too old to get into trades. My life is probably fucked because my first project earned me 10 years of income and I quit my job like a dumb ass.
Anyway, the point of this is to warn you: DO NOT QUIT YOUR JOBS UNLESS YOU EARNED ENOUGH MONEY TO NEVER NEED A JOB AGAIN. If my warning saves even a couple of you, it's worth it.

>>528410589Now, what you need to remember about this idea of a scripting language covering a gory core is that it's not exclusive to Godot, it exist in many other places, and you can take advantage of it.
Here are some examples of where else you can find the pattern:
- Your web browser using JavaScript
- Shell scripting that calls the operating system
- Supreme Commander used Lua scripting on top of their engine and is the RTS with the most units
- Halo 1 and 2 used a lisp-dialect called BlamScript
- Balatro and SNKRX both used Lua(a scripting language) and Love2D, a framework over an OpenGL backend
Looking back, Unreal and Unity are kind of anomalous and I think history will show it as great mistake that we tried to Frankenstein C# and C++ into game programming. Not a knock against any hard core Rust or C chads who know how hexagon arch. works and just prefer doing their own memory management at all times, but I think it's so much easier doing iterative game design with scripting languages
>>528411412This is also true. Not having to worry about other libraries while scripting is actually a huge relief and it integrating with the node system with things like @onready save a lot of time.
I hope we'll see more languages that are geared toward game dev in the future. I'm keeping an eye on Jank since Clojure has a history of replacing other frustrating languages: made by an irate Java programmer to replace enterprise Java, used by tired JavaScript developers who were sick of JS(ClojureScript), also used by shell programmers who were tired of writing in Shell(babashka)....
We'll see about Jai. Golang replaced Python in many instances by having lightning-fast compile times and being a very simple language(unlike C). I think Jai could do the same.

>>528415094may these developers learn that mobile markets are absolutely brutal in terms of promotion algorithm engagement
your game will only be promoted if it has high download count, high retention, and with bonus points for high in-game purchases
otherwise, it will immediately stagnate
the key to success on mobile is to create hypercasual, hyperlinear incremental games with simple progression systems, pump them full of time gates and microtransactions (to bypass these time gates), a battle-pass system for character cosmetics, with daily rewards to increase progression for this battle pass
then you spend as much money as possible on advertisements, with "ragebait" footage, to bait people into downloading and playing the free game displayed in the ads
once you gain enough players through these ads who are
- daily users
- microtransaction purchasers
- positive reviewers
the mobile app platform will then promote your game, bringing in the revenue
otherwise, your game flops
it is an incredibly ruthless platform to find success on, and boils down almost entirely to promotion budget, and the conversion rate of your advertisements
if you don't want to optimize for marketing, just stick to steam, and rely on generic social media posts to build your userbase

is there a reason why isometric 2D is almost never used? i mean you can still mix it with low poly meshes for animated or freely rotated objects.

>>528413093This copypasta has been spammed quite a bit already, but no one ever seems to bother to add explicit information on what exactly qualifies as "never have to work again" money and why "10 years of income" is not enough.
In order to never have to work again, you need to be able to survive off interest alone. The "retirement rule" is 4%, but you can't actually use that because the rule was made up for 60 year old boomers planning on their last paycheck to bounce. You will be forced to draw down the principal and in danger of running out of money within 40 years if you use 4%. To never have to work again, you need to be more conservative and use 2%.
Let's be incredibly optimistic and say "10 years of income" comes out to about a million. 2% a year off a lump sum of a million in the bank is only 20k a year. Be a short sighed boomer wanting your money to run out and 4% is still only 40k a year. Not enough to sustain you. You'll still have to work.
2% a year of 10 million is 200k, which might be enough. So you'll need money in the tens of millions to quit your day job.

Your game doesn't have to appeal to as many people as possible to be good. Filtering people should be your goal. Easily filtered people in general should be aggressively kept away from your game because they are always going to cause problems later if you don't remove them early and often

>>528431496my ide won't let me write quests like this
>>528436164I spend half my day on those sites. The bigger genres have overwhelming amounts of flops because they are full of monkey grifters trying to make a quick buck. The players are spoiled for choice so they stick to the top games, and even then they forget them after a week because they have new games to try. You don't understand how the mainstream economy works. Disposable. Highly-Competitive. Stale.
So I got a MIDI keyboard with knobs and now I think I wanna make the music myself too. Haha gonna be 10 more years at least but it will be fun.
not gonna make it to DD again bros
started this project at the beginning of the year haven't been able to submit a single time yet
>>528435252I try convincing people they don't even need to know how to code to make most indie games. If you aren't programming your own lighting logic, then wtf do you need to be smart for. Just learn what a dictionary is, a list, a foreach loop, and make your fucking game. "Muh design patterns" gtfo. The only "Pattern" I learned was a state system. That's it.
>>528415604Integration of the syntax to the engine, being able to directly used nodePath is by itself a fucking great thing.
>>528436083You have it backwards. You're supposed to get a girlfriend in order to make a better game. Making a good games is the end, not the means.
When are marnixdevs gonna fuck off and leave us alone?
Just like bake game lighting.
>>528436484In the exact same situation as you, hah. Maybe we can make it to dd64 at least?
>>528436380The only thing that matters is supply and demand. Bigger genres are bigger because they have higher demand, but some of them also have too much supply. For example, metroidvanias have high demand but also an oversupply, and are therefore ultra-competitive and require a very high quality entry in order to compete. However, farming sims have high demand but low supply, and so just about any mediocre entry will sell for millions. I don't think anyone in their right mind would consider farming games a small niche genre.
>>528436565System complexity grows exponentially with the addition of every system that can interreact with others. Complex systems have not survived the /agdg/ competency crisis.
>>528436993ahaha yea bro totallyyy im totally gonna have a demo with content and not just sit in my debug room all day feature creeping and stuff
I only shitpost when I'm compiling, so really the worse /agdg/ is, the more is getting done.
>>528437052Genres like farming sims and RTS games and open world RPGs, etc. might have a low supply but you have to ask yourself why that is. It's because those games are much harder and time-consuming to make than your average indie game in the usual indie genres. Sure, you have less competition, but these are genres that require your full commitment, and either a lot of money or a lot of time or both
>>528437253Refactoring code to reduce complexity is allowed. If you think the only way to handle complex systems, is complex design patterns that implement interfaces, or multiple levels of polymorphism and abstraction, then you are wrong.
That reminds me though, I do have a very simple save system on one my games. Basically a save, load, update UI method. Then I add this to everything that needs saving. And I just loop through every class that uses it. Very simple. It's ok to use "complex" features in straight forward, simple to read, simple to debug ways.
>>528437419Actually I take this back, I just had to compile twice because I spelled something wrong both times so that isn't really true all the time.
m*rnix and his consequences have been a disaster for /agdg/
>>528437670>Refactoring code to reduce complexity is allowedyeah, people that don't code don't even know what refactoring means
>>528437838Marnix's issue is not programming. It's art and knowing what game to make.
>>528437918It's just writing things in a way to get the same result, but simpler. A Mexican restaurant near me had a lunch menu that was literally 1-100. Where many identical items were on the list, but 1 came with beans, and 2 came with rice, and 3 came with both. It was a fucking mess. They refactored the menu and now it's far more easy for the user to engage with.
>>528437670That's fine for when you're working by yourself, but you can't just do major refactors when you collab, since you basically need to block everyone else out of those systems for however long it takes to do those refactors.
Think of it this way: how many /agdg/ "programmers" are capable of getting a PR accepted by a big repo like Godot or Blender? How many are capable of writing and maintaining a decently popular plugin/addon? Most self-taught devs have no clue what it takes to work with other software developers.
hot slime pussy in a neighborhood near you
>>528438282mu PRs get always accepted at my job
>>528438282You can do major refactors. And ya, it's like you said, you block people out or whatever you need to do. If it can be done for a corp with hundreds of programmers and dozens of teams, it can be done with a 2 person agdg team.
It's harder to update Blender safely and effectively than to make a game with 1 or 2 people, so idk what your point is there. I'm saying making an indie game is usually easy. Not that programming overall is easy.

slow and steady wins the race
>>528438659how does slime puss feel like?

Any tutorial on recreating HOMM3 in godot?
>>528442106wrong, if you are following a tutorial you should have the tut vid fullscreened on one monitor then your 3d editor fullscreened on the other so you can follow along
also godot editor needs more realestate than a single screen because once you have file browser and properities tab properly useuable the 3d editor region is too damn small, so you really want a super widescreen monitor for godot, the bezel between monitors would probably be a pain too there
and alt-tabbing between apps is slower than mousing over to a different monitor, so 3 monitors is peak, one for web browser one for blender one for game engine

You realize a real video game that is suppose to have a sense of adventure is going to have different themed zones with levels within that zone fit the theme?
You looked at the tutorial/first zone of the game and assumed every level in the game is suppose to have these colors and theme. Idk where that kind of autism comes from when many games from the fucking 80s even have different colors/themes for different zones of a game.
Does the modern western indie dev just assume a games assets in one area and its colors and themes just get repeated on every level and the game is like... a 2 hours long mini game? Why is it so HARD for you to concept in your brain what a 6 zone 6-9 hour game is like?

yo guys I made this I am le zoomer and liked quake and half life 2 grav gun I hope to make a big building u can shoot stuff in i dunno im just having some fun
On an architectural note, I have split every system into two subsystems, usually a renderedController and a systemManager they communicate with each other all routed through an event bus and load their settings from the ParameterManager.
Is that a bad idea? I have like a 100 signals being fired lmfao but to be fair I have built all the systems I wanted now
>>528471643Yes that's accurate to the world outside of /agdg/, reviewers can't criticize company games so the first, similar indie they see will receive all the ire that would have gone to the company game.

I am working on how to make a storage system within the world because I want to make a microwave that you can put things in and a fridge that keeps food from spoiling but you can pull it over and everything spills out of it
Another weird thing I have is making a heavy object feel heavy when I pull on my beautifully 3d modelled red barrel I flip some stuff in the locomotion statemachine and twist some knobs in the camera controller which slows the user down and drags the mouse towards the grab point BUT the barrel itself doesnt behave as heavy as id like I got no clue how to fix that!

>>528481814>best looking game ever made by codetardsPost game
>>528482276What challenge does a walking simulator present to the player? What does the player, play?
A spreadsheet simulator presents plenty of challenges.
The walking simulator is the worst slop genre in gaming. Almost as bad at those linear mobile games that cut things that you can't fail.
>>528482383If this game was made to look better, it could easily be the next portal.
>>528482464>nooo you HAVE to have challenge!! you HAVE to be progressing toward something!!I should not expect an autist who is making a game for other autists to understand a genre where you just walk around looking and interacting with stuff so lets just drop the convo here since it's pointless
>>528481883Caustic Cumsock
>>528482615that sounds like the most boring shit
>>528482464Well to be fair, the 'gameplay' of the walking simulator is choosing what to look at, and piecing together the narrative through both normal story and the surroundings. At least it's more than VN, which is the same thing but even more restrictive.
>>528481479GTA which? GTA1 (GameBoy) might be feasible.

>>528479887Hell yeah man it looks more interesting like this. I think maybe you should raise the red part and add some black underneath it like how you did with the cake.
You also don't need to take the feedback of people here so closely, I see you posting after changing the slightest of things. In the end it's your game, you don't need to make others happy.
>>528482971You're amazing. Have you disavowed the inner circle yet?

i shouldn't have done that
>>528483172good. now think of 3 additional parameters
>framerate>speed>how unity exactly processes collision
I fell in love with the habit of humiliating and keeping the inner circle in check
I resumed working on my model. I think this looks like a satisfactory torso area, what about you?
What I need to figure out is how to properly extrude his limbs and add clothes
>>528483274Depends on the game.
>SeperateSkyrim like where every thing can come on/off independently, but the con is that things don't fit as well and clip
>All in oneGood for when you only have one outfit for a character, or only a few variations.
>>528482971old version for comparison
>>528483104thats the primary inspiration. I was kind of in the high-end redstone world around 2018. In other factory games, you just plop down a "makes block X" machine. In minecraft you have to spend 100 hours messing with update order and monster spawning mechanics to design a machine
Roody:2d is supposed to be like that technical minecraft build-huge-auto-farms thing, but you aren't actively fighting against the game mechanics
since I started Roody:2d in 2019, the create mod released, minecraft added the autocrafter, zachtronics kind of disbanded?, and I've recently heard about the existence of sandustry
but I still think Roody:2d serves its niche.
unfortunately "aren't actively fighting against the game mechanics" means its has to be more or less perfect. fortunately in the past 2 years the todo list has been shrinking faster than it has been growing. I feel like i could finish it in 3 months if i quit my job.
>>528483067first time im hearing that i'm part of the inner circle. cool.
>>528483763He only has one outfit that changes depending on certain story things. Clothing damage n' shit.
>>528483785You're not part of it. I'm asking you what your position is in the revolution?
>>528483750Anon, I got rid of all the ngons and extruded a torso out. Now I need to figure out how to do shoulders
>>528483864Sounds like you can figure it from there then. Also consider a mix of the two, for example in my game the hats are separate from the model, so that they can be taken on/off.
>>528483912i've done a few minecraft mapmaker collabs
i think i have a few good ideas for making an agdg collab actually work, but they all take significant amount of effort for the "collab-organizer-anon".
Basically one guy has to make an entire working game in secret, then release a github and ask people to add levels. It only works with a few select genres.
but I'm very "just make (my) game pilled" so thats not going to happen
