So was Rouge just going to let eggman and shadow actually blow up earth? She talks to shadow in the control room before his last level, and then just kind of disappears when eggman goes back that to try and launch the cannon.

I really, genuinely was not baiting. I think the reaction this place had to Lettuce's innocuous statement was overblown and he made a solid point.
Let's take the Sonic movies for example. A lot of us fans, including me, do not like Sonic's character in those movies. It would be bad if 2 thirds into the second film, he suddenly started acting like Sega's Sonic.
You want to gradually push that. Develop into it.

I just don't think being in character is that intense of a priority. What is a priority is telling a good story and capturing the appeal of that character (Why else use them in the first place?). I am not going to defend all of Evan's decisions but I think it's fair to say that it's just her take on Silver.
I don't care about canon. In fact, I think IDW would be better off if it wasn't ever claimed to be canon. Then we could actually have this be IDW Silver. Have him develop into that sharp Silver the fans want so much. Now IDW just does not work. The character had a mental change between issues out of nowhere for a meta reason. That is bad. This is bad writing that is being applauded for giving the fans what they want.
It's hard to argue about this because people will think "Oh, you just want him to be a cute cinnamon baby". No. That's not the idea here.

Most of the characterfag autism in this general comes down to people being purists. Anything that goes against the perfect game canon is a direct insult to them personally.
This isn't specific to Sonic fans in any way. Sonic is just a unique case because the games are actually inconsistent with most other media.
You can find Satamnic in multiple different pieces of media. Prime and Movie Sonic are almost exactly the same. IDW Sonic is an evolution of Satam and Archie Sonic. The only media that directly reflects the game characterization are Sonic X, the OVA, and the manga.
Because of this, it's only natural that the majority of fans are not hyper critical about who Sonic is.
