i was wrong, art IS progress because you're improving your skill at making assets
Is this good lava my fellow artfag devs?
>>528485850you're right, I think I know just the game to make
I Was Groomed By The Inner Circle, Here Is My Story
>>528486048it's clearly a scrolling texture on top of the quilt design.
make the lava more alive or something
>>528486213For what? I don't participate in sales. It degrades the value of my game.
Created an itch project page for the next dd. Now I can continue with THE GAME.
It will be my first dd. Please let me know what to expect
>>528486048Yeah it works. Reads as lava.
Just keep in mind that most of the art advise from here doesn't come from artists.
>>528486363The inner circle will either promote you and hugbox you into a position where your game will be strictly kept at a low level of quality if they decide you are pathetic enough to be controlled and used. Otherwise you will be ignored and never acknowledged in any way
>>528486363mostly butt pats, occasionally the honest feedback
be sure to also crawl the thread, anons will give random game feedback here if they don't have an itch account, or want to be more brutal about it
>>52848636350% of the advice you get will be obvious stuff you already had planned. 25% will be completely useless suggestions that you don't think fit the game you're wanting to make. 25% will be things you hadn't thought of that you actually like. Be gracious and accept all of it.
I've learned that if you're a more experienced dev its better to wait until your vertical slice is basically done before getting feedback.
People get bored of your game the more times you post it to dday
>>528486363I may record a video of your game and share it itt so you can feel pain watching me fail to comprehend your game
Juan you didn't have to add photographs of your asshole to the README.md.. sigh..
Is Boku still the cutest /agdg/ member?
>>528487357he isn't even cuter than the ugliest bocchisis thoughbeit
I just came in godot and already have a game, why did you people lie and say making games is hard?
>>528487924How do you cum in a game engine

I could make like, $20.
stream... my.... game!!!!!!!!!
>>528487924Making a game is easy. After all, a game is just a set of mechanics in a pocket universe. The hard part is actually finishing and shipping a "quality" product.
For example, it's very easy to create a GTA clone with a guy and a vehicle to drive around. And it's technically a game. But it's not a product. You need story, missions, music, art, style, how does it interact with different hardware configuration, asset handling, debugging, etc
Uohhhhhhhh!! !! Godot erotic !!!!!! Godot editor and addons !!! Erotic .... ToT ToT ToT
>>528488004>I'm afraid of the inner circleYou shouldn't be. They are counting on the ignorance of the newcomers. Right now they are severely weakened so they don't hold that much power. The previous 12 months have been a turbulent period where they were completely humiliated and decimated after a streak of flops the like of which these threads hadn't seen in generations. Right now they are licking their wounds in the discord so they don't pose too much of a threat. Just don't fall for their bullshit when they start giving you 'feedback'. Any stream by osur/lafafa you can safely ignore. There's a few big streamers they have in their pocket. Brimstonewalker is also controlled by them.
Is inner circle a group of people? a metaphorical deity? Jungian shadow?
>>528488484I suppose that's right, I'll work on it a bit more before showing it off then.
>>528488607The cabal of big developers that controls the flop of information and the popularity contest of the /agdg/ threads so that they are always at the top. Some big developers refuse to join them. most of the small developers are their slaves and supporters but aren't part of the actual circle, much in the same way that leftists support corporations that pander to them but make their lives worse.
>>528488731>flop of informationflow of information
>>528488841>flop of informationthat's just called /agdg/
>>528488515>>528488731Why is it always the pedocord users?
>>528488515Thank you for your flop of information. I will prepare myself to resist the urge to fall to their hands
>want to see how other "Slay the Spire clones" try to change the formula
>look at "More like this" section
>fucking Balatro, Binding of Isaac, Darkest Dungeon and all popular games with the roguelite tag but not a single Slay the Spire clone even though it should be mechanically identical
Fucking useless algorithm, I bet if I look up actual Slay the Spire clones they'll all point towards Slay The Spire.
>>528488952Because they are the most oversocialized and deceitful creatures you can find in gamedev. Terminally being on discord usually means that a lot of your headspace is occupied with social dynamics and manipulation tactics/networking opportunism instead of technical interests relating to game development. That's the reason why the inner circle's games are all stagnant shovelware but they spread the echochamber narrative that their games are great through their propaganda network
>the game that people want me to make is not the game that I want to make
>>528489186It's simple. If you are poor utilize your talent to get money, otherwise make things that you want to make. Your talent/skill is a divine gift bestowed upon you to use as you see fit.
i hate having to make testing tools for every project
Being a gamedev in the current year is not unlike being a man dating women in the current year. And gamers are like women.
They keep demanding more and more while offering less and less.
They're spoiled for choice but bitch about how everything is shit now.
They keep going for the worst and most exploitative and then blaming everyone else for their own choices.

>>528490171Nope. It just means you have to take control of your life, otherwise the elites will. Elites want you to feel helpless and blaming your own shortcomings on others takes away power from you.
There are 5'4" millionaires, if you get t-boned by a truck it's still your fault because you could have avoided it. And even if you died so what? It was a good run.
Never lose control over your life. Never blame others.
But this has to be accompanied with something that you want to "achieve".

so, on the subject of pokeclones, how do you develop an element system that's balanced? the official one is really intricate and I don't understand how (or even if) they intended to balance it
>>528491435> official one is really intricate> it's just rock-paper-scissor but with a different coat of paint
>>528491491it's intricate in the sense that there's a fuckton of different types, each with their own interactions, and the interaction chart isn't mirrored
>>528491491If you've never played Pokemon, just say so, anon.
>>528486171kek. he really should release, i think i know whats going on mentally.
>no idea what else to add, a feeling that the game needs more>fear of releasing>>528489650how's the job going? any plans with new games besides that other one you've posted?
>>528491670I am a compfag.
>>528491653> there's a fuckton of different typesAnd?
1. Create a different sets of rock-paper-scissor elements.
2. Pokemon can have two of those elements, and now you have a compound version of rock-paper-scissor
3. Use moves/abilities/stats (STUFF THAT IS NOT ELEMENTS) as a hack to balance out different rock-paper-scissor combinations.
>>528491435Do you really need an elemental system?
balancing a turn based game that isn't a deckbuilder is really really tough and it's all because of damage avoidance.
>>528491435The whole game is inherently unbalanced with legendary Pokes having a raw power advantage from stats alone and so on and so forth. There is not really a need to "balance" such a system, and I think later attempts (e.g. fairy type to weaken dragon) didnโt really do much good.
>>528491653Yeah they just went for what seemed cool/flavorful.
Of course you donโt want any single type to be "stronger than everything else" but that kinda comes naturally with enough types, there will be at least a small number of enemy types that can be categorized as a weakness, like dragon had ice weakness from the start.
And the moveset is another angle on top of this, iirc there was not really a very strong dragon move in gen1, "Dragon Rage" is kinda laughable in most situations. Originally the "super strong 5/5 move" was only in Fire/Water, I think? With Plant/Thunder having variations on it. But those four types otoh have very clear weaknesses. Later they gave the super strong move to more and more elements, another questionable decision.
>>528491491It is kind of true, if the RPS system is complex enough, it will seem intricate but it will also not be solvable, in the same way that RPS is not solvable, there is no perfect setup, there are only tradeoffs, and when the metagame moves to one specific composition being played a lot, there is always a counter-composition that can be designed specifically to beat it.
>>528492059put parries in it that negate all damage
>>528489650This sounds like a great video game premise
>>528485669 (OP)How many reviews (or copies sold) do you need from your game to quit waging? Not retirement tier, but enough to quit waging and give you plenty of time to attempt to make another successful game.

I have to choose between the prototype I did for a horror game with a cute anime girl with water guns that kills rainbow monsters at night time with water to save her older sister that I really want to make because it is single player or local co-op heavily inspired by something like crow country and other survival horror games iv played (But you go into first person aiming when you aim and not some kinda 3rd person top down aiming)
Or that online multiplayer co-op animal crossing survival horror crafting game prototype you may have seen me post before. (You can probably tell survival-horror is my favorite game genre to play personally other than from-software games)
I'm leaning more towards the anime girl with water guns game not because I dont love that online co-op prototype iv posted here from time to time but because since I have to choose one of these to do after bokube releases I really wanna prove to myself and a lot of haters that I can make a game in 1-2 years if I'm doing it full-time for the first time and not wageslaving anymore; so using all my new skills to make a single player game without networking limitations may be easier to finish in 1-2 years. I get the feeling if I do the online multiplayer game seriously even full-time id run into challenges that would extend the dev time on that project to 3-5 years regardless of what I want because the nature of networking and adding systems ontop that always break the networking logic until you patch them up; and then that patching up process adds time compared to a single player game.

Day 23 on a Thread for Project C-Con โ "Wait, it was Sunday?" Edition
Journal logs are being posted into /agdg/ daily.
Could've honestly finished the animation basics tutorial but it was turning out a bit sloppy with the keyframes so I'll save myself to finish that tutorial tomorrow instead. Not that sloppy keyframes matter at this stage, just learning what they even are and and how to place them is what matters anyways. I'll probably be off work Tuesday so we'll be hitting our next big effort then really, till next time Anon.

>>528500024Maid Cafe Coop dev whomst I already believe will make it, really needs to lock in before Biteme potentially takes the majority of players for themselves. Maid Cafe Coop dev clearly doesn't have the art skills or coding skill to do this at a fast pace. He's basically on even footing if it was 1v1 against any of the Biteme members, except Marnix, Marnix would lose. However, it's a 1v3 and his minor upperhand on the art end is completely overshadowed by Biteme's coding skill. He doesn't seem to be bothered by it but I'd be in panic mode. I already get panicked when I see a game that's similar to mine but someone making the same thing? I don't understand how he comes off so calm.

After getting a demo out and listening to feedback I can't stop thinking about how many blindspots I have from lack of constitently playing games these last few years. 1. People will be overwhelmed with new stuff being introduced.

I don't know what concepts you need to teach the player since you haven't said anything about your game, but the way to go is to gently introduce the concept in a normal way, then place a hard filter that can be easily succeeded by doing the thing. Repeat the instructions next to it if needed.
I'm the first ever dev on here to successfully disassociate from /agdg/. Not just in the sense that I don't publicly proclaim my game as an /agdg/ game, but that even /agdg/ itself can't agree whether or not my game is an /agdg/ game, and mostly think's it's not.

On top of internal pressure, I discovered the concept of "momentum." I started thinking, "Instead of pushing this wheel all the time, I can just kick it and it's gonna roll on its own?" so the concept of momentum actually made me focus less on doing work, and more on getting started into work. So my focus was always on "kick the wheel" rather than "push it all the time".
The quote, "work smart not hard" also absolutely ties into this. It's super important that you put thought into being more efficient, ergonomic, having less friction to everything you're doing. The more friction the ground has, the less better the wheel will roll, and you'll need to go back to pushing it. Yes you will still have to do all the work, but the important part is your mentality and work ethic. Your mentality shifts from "ugh I have to do all this shit" to "alright, let me kick the wheel once more so it doesn't stop rolling." , but when you think of it as your momentum slowing down, you naturally, kinda primally want it to gain speed again. In any case, the point is to work smart and not hard, sliding across the floor is easier
than walking on it. Keep your momentum, and you'll keep sliding and eventually reach your destination, and when you lose your momentum, no problem, try to find what you bumped into, get it out of the way and
build it up again.
The point is keep the ball rolling, always be doing things even if they're little, and you'll pick up speed and can do even more, bigger things, quicker, I'm really stating the obvious but you have to intuitively understand it still.
>>528521597I also know C/C++, Rust, Python, JS/TS, C#, and Java, and I choose to use GDScript because it is the best option.

why do game directors/designers stagnate or fall off the older they get? does this have to do something with being out of touch or falling out of love with games? i want to do this for a long time but idk if I'll be able produce fun games once I get older. i see the fun in survivorlikes but can't understand the appeal of something like supermarket simulators.

If you're passively watching youtubes then spend 16 hours a day, it won't make a difference, you will come away empty-handed.
If you actively work on things that you're reading/watching, changing things to understand when they work and when they fail, etc. then some hours a day until you feel you aren't absorbing anymore.
Even more than "hours per day" is consistency and review. So every day/every other day. And going back to things from 2 weeks back, a month back. This reinforces and solidifies it in your brain.
If this is your first experience with programming, I'd suggest setting aside gamedev altogether and focusing down on the programming stuff because as far as topics in programming go, gamedev is a bit of a strange one. So you're jumping in the deep end without understanding what's beginner and what's advanced.
I also wouldn't start with C++. Programming knowledge translates laterally so if you instead pick up some scripting language like python or lua, it won't be completely unrelated to C++. In fact a large amount of it (at least through beginner levels) is almost exactly the same.
>>528526459Damn, I am actually the person in that picture.

>>528503109Git as in the software that lets you version your code, is good if you ever change things, and suddenly they dont work the way you want. This includes updating your engine, which may change how some things work. Or if you have some complex mechanic that you fine tune, like the way your car handles in a driving game, you change some tiny number because wtf what is this doing here and then month later youre like, wtf why does the car handle so weird. It wiil seem stupid until you actually fuck up and need it.
Git as in online service like gitlab or github, is very good as a backup, you can upload assets using git LFS, as well as your code. Useful if your pc dies or something.
