the knight is one of the ghosts, I'm not 100% sure which one but likely mad dummy. that's why the knight can fly. the actual body being possessed is something yanked out from the mayor's basement, which is why it has antlers.

To be honest, REDACTED is more Gaster than Gaster himself and I actually wished Mystery Man never existed. What makes Gaster "Gaster" is that he is a unfinished forgotten character that was never meant to exist. REDACTED looks like an actual glitch room you could find in a videogame by accident.
Gaster being able to talk and making up a videogame (project theory almost confirmed) where he specifically wrote furry gay fanservice kind of ruined his whole creepypasta atmosphere. This is like giving Herobrine a backstory and making him talk. It doesn't resemble the original character anymore.
Even so, Toby could have written Gaster similar to The Princess in IfYouSeeHeTurnOffTheGame. Gaster could have been a strange Slenderman that could appear ANYTIME when the screen transition to another room plays. The fun VALUE in Undertale was part of the same deal, you don't feel "safe" in the game, it's like you would encounter some shit like Farlands in any moment in old Minecraft.
That concept could also expand his "incomplete character" status even further, where he would try to reconstruct himself and make some kind of giygas monster for a final boss.
I can't pretend I'm not disappointed with canon Gaster. Windings don't even show up anymore.

I think this is what you WANT him to be, but the Gaster followers are pretty explicit that Gaster was a man who existed in Undertale, he was the royal scientist before Alphys, and he built the CORE. And we can guess that when he fell into his creation, it took his "memory" from the people of the world. Gaster is a very concrete character in Undertale, whether or not MysteryMan sprite is him.
I don't know about "unfinished", but "forgotten character that was never meant to exist" is the realm of Goner Kid. Who, we can guess is related to Gaster since he's black & white, based on FUN value, and asks you to forget about him.

I doubt it'll lock you out of the best ending or anything, but maybe it'll change dialogue and some events. Weird sprite Kris running around stabbing people seemed bad. But Seam seems good and pointed us in the direction of retrieving the mantle, so I can't see it be a totally bad choice.

Kinda hoping you get more than some praise from Seam for avoiding it though. I beat it without the mantle on my main save, hopefully I didn't just screw myself into making the final bosses way harder with no benefit.

I don't like how Susie's character development happened all at once. She want from wanting to beat the shit out of Kris to being their bestie over the course of a few hours.
