Super C (nes) was one of the first games I ever played and I replay it every now and then

I'm actually playing vita games tonight!
Started 999 right before going to bed yesterday.
Been looking forward to this game for a long while now but never felt in quite the right mood.
So far i'm not really sure about the reason for the two modes (adv/nvl). Doesn't look like there's any benefit to adv, you miss a lot of text toggling between the two. Game seems to force you into adv mode between scenes meaning you have to toggle modes and read the log to catch everything.
Other than that. Let's enjoy this!

The dual screen is better for that story.
But it's not like the Vita version is strictly worse, though. It's got voice-acting and you don't have to redo escape rooms when going for repeated playthroughs (which you will need to do for the True Ending). The DS version is definitely more tedious in that regard.

I played a DS game recently. I was tethered to the wall the entire time because the battery life shrunk so much (again. I replaced the battery once). Meanwhile my vita battery still lasts 5 hours despite being used much more than my DS.

Nice. I played 999 years ago and my 1st ending was a different one. Submarine is much spookier though.
Since you're playing the Vita version, you'll be able to finish the routes much quicker since there's no need to replay entire routes now including the escape rooms. It actually took me a long time to get 999's true ending the first time around.

I'm starting Ciel Nosurge Offline which I've heard should be similar enough to the original Ciel Nosurge but without all of the online functionalities, or at least replaced with something such that you won't need to be online. What exactly does that entail? Does that mean I'll be able to read through the story and keep playing it for hours at a time, or would I still have to wait some time (or at least modify my date&time)? I read there's also a mechanic that needed the camera to scan something to connect online to acquire something, but I'm not sure which exactly is the replacement for that mechanic. I've played visual novels and dating simulator games before, but never one that has mechanics bound to real time like Love Plus (or so I've heard), so I'm not sure how to proceed with this game. Do I just play (i.e. talk to Ion and ask her to do things) it for 5 to 15 minutes every day and slowly but organically progress?

I was talking about missions where you need to protect NPCs, not story deaths. I don't mind that kind of mission in some games but I don't think it works well in this one. But maybe I just haven't got the hang of the gameplay yet.

I played the game on hard and you can save most npcs. There is one lategame fight(I think in truth) where I was annoyed that it was scripted - I saved npcs, killed the enemies, and then the cutscene played like I didn't(similar to forced loss fights).
Sometimes however it's luck based, like the enemy has to fail their roll? miss attack? or get staggered by something.
The actually hard fights are in "postgame", those are actual fucking challenges both mentally/strategically and skill based.

Meruru is a fun game to plat except for the fact that you can only reach the bonus dungeon on new game plus. So if he has a completed save file from years ago then that's perfect.

I miss my Vitacore games. There have been several threads on /v/ talking about Neps and all that stuff, and it has been full of Complie Heart slander and it has made me very sad. They are nowhere near as bad as so many people claim them to be. I'm not saying Neps are some absolute master class of games, because they really aren't, but they were NEAT and FUN. I want my cutesy Japanese console-tans with their hijinks and all the stuff on the side, too, fanservice included. It's been super sad to see all that go.

On the other hand, it really makes me remember the good days even more fondly because it felt like this weird little time frame when the state of things was actually moving forward, Japanese weeb stuff was being released more and more leniently as they were, not with ridiculous content edits and such. Then the whole OLZ thing happened and everything was downhill from there.

The great thing about "vitacore" games is the sincerity. I'm a bit more forgiving of their shortcomings when I can see the developers are trying to make the same kind of games they they personally enjoy and are genuinely passionate about it. Not specifically limited to ecchi games but that naturally comes with the territory, because everyone likes cute girls.

"Vitacore" is such an apt term to describe low and mid-budget Japanese games of the 2010s. It's a specific flavour that started in the late 90s but only truly blossomed during the PS3 to mid-PS4 era.
I'm very fond of those times, and I'm at least glad I got to experience it. My only regret is not learning JP sooner so I could play those games untranslated back then. Now I can understand JP but it's past the prime era of "vitacore", but at least I'll still have my games with me.

Even though they're not my favourite, I do respect Compile Heart for trying different styles for all their games. Like, you can criticise their execution, but they always have neat ideas for their games and include some weird subsystems. The only people who accuse CH of being "generic" have never actually played much CH games.
