Nowadays you can get normal characters with stuff in their kits that used to be novel and exclusive like Distributed Damage or Taunt/Shield/Invincibility. There are also regular units that are as powerful or better than pilgrims.
If you want to play in braindead retard mode then sure, the newest top of the line units are what you want, but ultimately not necessary to beat the game, there certainly are options.

There's an external site called Midasbuy that's officially endorsed and you can top up there instead of in the app store, possibly cheaper, but I think what they sell is mostly gem packs and the value can be bad, generally the in-game packs are better value.

It's not really a bug per se, it's more of an animation cancel like you see in fighting games. If they never removed fast shooting from Alice, they shouldn't remove it from SBS. Only the automating it part with a 3rd party software/peripheral is illegal.
