There was actually plenty of opportunity for DLC paypigging for the game but they fumbled the ball hard with the initial DLC and interest dried up.

They are all fun so pick whichever one is the coolest, get both dlcs though for all the units
Thorek and Grombindal are my personal favorites, Grombindal because he has a lot going for him in the early game and you can get out of control really fast in addition to fighting elves early on, and Thorek because he has a unique treasure-hunting mechanic and can craft more items in general

For most elector counts it's just Mixu's Legendary Lords, Marienburg like the hipster they're, is a separate one called SCM Marienburg which adds Jaan of Marienburg with a roster that's a bit of a spin on the usual Empire units but nothing too crazy, mostly just makes them more thematic. It also adds a Marienburg pirate faction to Lustria and a merchant expedition in Cathay.

You know how it usually goes as dwarfs, you gain a decent bit of territory, kill one or two bigger foes, and from there it's all smooth sailing with basically no threats. Well not this time. I realize now what makes dwarves so annoying to fight is there's no good way to fight them. Most factions can't beat them at ranged on higher diffs. You can't shut down their ranged with light cav or flyers because they're all hybrid units. They're crazy resistant to magic. They're clones of a badass amoral bounty hunter and are programmed to follow orders, they should have always had it in them to do the most horrific things if commanded, they probably even trained for it.
The chip making them do it is super lame and ruins the character development of some of the named clones, instead of some of the officers slowly becoming real human beans happenstance has their implants get removed or malfunction or whatever.

The date before it is the fight against Dong Zhou, there's a coalition of sorts semi-united against one big bad, whereas in the date afterwards, things are more centralized. The World Betrayed start date has the most starting lords I think and they're all kinda off on their own so it's my favourite one.
