People think knuckles is black because he was allegedly inspired by jamaican/rastafarian aesthetics, which might have some truth to it. Either way, he's a red echidna with light skin. Rouge is a white bat with olive skin. If you make human versions of these characters and aggressively alter physical characteristics like that, such as making knuckles or rouge black, it has the same effect as giving them green or blue hair. It's alienating.
