Bottom line, FFXIV exploded in popularity because the story was engaging and everything around it sucked. Now the story is unengaging and when the MMO has to stand on its merits as a game we watch it fold like origami. SHB and Endwalker's success was more to do with what WoW and other competitors were doing wrong than what Square was ever doing right.

Between now and August, we have Occult and Forked Tower to keep us held over. Once 7.3 drops in August, barely anything sprinkles in from August to January. (They did confirm at the start of this year only having TWO MAJOR PATCHES of 7.2 and 7.3.) No ultimate and no variant dungeons to keep anyone latched on. Deep dungeons and an alliance raid isn't going to hold anyone's attention for 4 months minimum. We're basically on maintenance mode already.
7.4 might get a positive spike with players coming back for Savage, but that's if they're willing to tolerate Square Enix's bullshit anymore. If we have another Abyssos situation (where a mass exodus of players leave), then the Savage and Ultimate could be looking dreadful to recruit and plan around.
