It had a far better reception and higher numbers at launch. If you could vial cards without having an existing playset sure, but you can't. My total count from launch missing no rewards gets me 4 legends on this account.

And I'll stress it's not even a bad account. I can play Artifact and Forest just fine and I made both decks. The average player is at about 100 packs right now, which is about 13 legends on average. You might have like 7 more between legend packs, starter deck and chests. At a normal distribution it's actually more likely than not that you can't build one of the expensive decks even if you funnel all resources to one place. Portal is extremely realistic in this scenario even if you don't get a good seed for it but the odds of being able to complete Rune or Abyss is actually statistically unlikely

Shadow players are historical upplayers the same way Sword players were historical downplayers. When the deck sucks they try to rob you of vials, when the deck is good they insist it was always this good and the new legend that spawns 4/2 zombies with rush had nothing to do with it

Forest is genuinely Sword with skill. Sword gets free as buffs, great storms, better rushes and overall does what Forest tries to do in less cards. Only thing Sword doesn't have that Forest does is Roach OTK...and in return, Sword hard counters that particular deck type and mating presses any Forestfag for good measure.

To play Forest in a way that looks like Sword requires serious amounts of skill and forethought. Sword requires none of that. It plays itself.

The deck is not "just" hard to pilot.
It's hard to pilot and strictly weaker than every other class. Some of the best cards in the class punch you in the dick as a cost which just ends up making them liabilities because you have no vengeance or any kind of pay off for doing that despite being half vampire. Dealing with wide requires you to know the most optimal way to do it and you'll still end up blowing way more cards than they spent to set up in the first place. All of the little necromancy in the class just feels mediocre when other classes drop just as powerful effects with even less set up. Cerberus is a great card but requires set up to get any kind of actual value out of and often forces you to make the most suboptimal trades known to man if you are in a position where you had an established board and need to clear instead of hit face AND she forces you to just not have access to the already limited card pool because any bat card is just going to make her worse unless you're the luckiest person alive.

Let's not forget that rune can cocytus into dimension shift into drawing 5 apocalypse cards and having 10 pp potentially reducing your 20hp to 1hp with a single card and you can't heal up because it's a max hp reduction

Is the next set going to bring back the Resonance mechanic for Portal? I liked their gimmick of caring about how many cards you had in your deck and being able to add new cards to it, the current Portal just doesn't feel the same.
