I know there's been a lot of back and forth about Bridget, and this post isn't for that. I want to talk about the fact that, whether you like it or not, Bridget is transgender, and how it's affected me.

I am transgender. However, I'm not the stereotype some people have in their minds about how a transgender person is, I'm moderate and level-headed and usually try to approach things from a realistic angle. For much of my time being a trans man, I didn't really think having representation mattered that much. I was the guy in college that rolled my eyes when my professors talked about how diversity is important in writing, the one who took things with a grain of salt while my peers were all-in supporting progressive topics. I thought it doesn't matter how a character looks or identifies and you should be able to relate with or like a character regardless of how similar they are to you. And I still believe it is perfectly fine and wonderful to like characters different than you!

But because of Bridget, it finally clicked for me why representation is important to so many people.The uncertainty Bridget had about accepting her feelings, especially because of the worry about how others would perceive her and whether it would ruin her relationship with her family, these are common struggles trans people have to face. It certainly was for me, becoming aware of my feelings during a time where society largely still thought trans people were freaks (imagine your own mother derogatorily calling you "butch" and shaming you just for wanting to dress like a boy!). And because trans people were still "freaks" around this time, I wasn't met with a whole lot of love and acceptance initially. My mother gave me the silent treatment for a week when I first came out. My family ultimately abandoned me.

Kids at school would blatantly ignore my name/pronoun preference. Even years after starting HRT, I had a job where the managers knew I was trans because of my then-legal birth name, and they went out of their way to call me "she" when I totally looked and sounded male.

So playing Strive, seeing Bridget go through this all-too-familiar struggle, and to not be met with doubt or disdain or prejudice, but warmth and acceptance from Goldlewis and Ky, it almost felt like by extension, I was experiencing the warmth and acceptance I needed when I was the little anxious person in Bridget's shoes. It especially hit close to home because I started really sinking my teeth into GG while I was in an abusive situation, and learning Ky was my cope. Hearing a character that is special to me saying such kind things that have applied to my specific situation, it made me realize that experiencing characters and stories that are different than your own is great, but experiencing characters and stories that are like you provides a feeling of unmatched understanding, something that makes you especially feel at peace when you've been living in a world that has rejected you and tries to deny you and your rights at any opportunity.

That said, please respect Daisuke's decision to make Bridget trans, even if you don't love it. And while you're at it, please respect trans people. The world could really use more kindness and tolerance.

Lol no, her options are actually really strong against most of the cast considering all she needs is a single stray hit, even if it's a trade. She can also just say fuck it we ball and transform against slower characters with not much fullscreen presence and ignore the whole game.
Another thing is, getting in and out of the stance has no risk. She does not have to give up some pressure if she's getting into JR through a hit, she can start the party then and there despite it being one of the single strongest win cons. It runs out? *sigh* Mirror matches are NOT always even- again, if you read Japanese BBS you'd know. In Japan, difficulty of mirror match is based on how differently you need to play the character during the mirror, and whether you gain or lose your main tools. For example, as a Ragna player, I don't have to adjust my playstyle for the mirror (just space my 5b)- I actually get new tools to use specifically for the match (double berial variation, dp clashing gimmicks, etc). Because of these factors, it's generally accepted here that Ragna has a relatively easy mirror, which acts as a 6-4 matchup when it comes to character ranking. On the other hand, Arakune mirrors cause the player to play a completely different style plus he loses a lot of his options (where's your curse pressure when you're cursed yourself?). Last I read, the Japanese said he has the hardest mirror and ranked it at 3-7 in terms of character ranking, but I haven't checked recently. And then finally, a lot of chars like Bang/Tsubaki/Hakumen have relatively plain mirrors which get 5-5 in terms of character ranking.

A matchup chart tells you which character is favored to win if both players know the matchup and are of equal skill, not which character needs the least homework to get to that point. While it is true that some mirrors are straightforward to learn and others are not, that's irrelevant to a matchup chart.

This was written back when games weren't "you need to play better to win this matchup" since characters did unique things and being at a disadvantage meant you needed to adapt your play and decision making to account for it instead of just guess the 50/50 correctly more often. Overcoming a disadvantaged matchup involved knowing how to play your character around what the other character was doing, while advantaged matchups were running your standard gameplan and walking over the other character since they can't do anything about it. Your basic oki doesn't work because they have a certain move that fucks it over or a different wakeup time or some hurtbox fuckery? You now have to use suboptimal okizeme to get any advantage off a knockdown. This is WHY the matchup is bad, not just "he have bigger neutral button and does more damage." You'd have a character whose strongest tools simply don't work in matchups and adapting to those disadvantages was 100% part of playing the matchup and something to be talked about.

If you have to work harder to win a matchup, it is a bad matchup, even if it is the same character as yourself. Imagine there is a game with 4 characters. Character A has a good matchup vs character B, an even matchup vs character C, and a bad matchup vs character D. Now, when A fights A, if they have to work harder than they do against character C, is it not a bad matchup? Would you not account for this when rating the character's power? We are not looking at the vacuum of the matchup alone but the overall matchup spread. While both character As have an equal opportunity of winning, when you look at it in the lens of "how many matchups can I encounter where I am forced to work hard" you have both character A and character D to think of. Thinking of only the matchup as an isolated space and not as part of the overall spread to consider when picking a character is the flaw in your logic.

That's not the purpose of a matchup chart. A matchup chart shows matchups, not the homework you need to learn the matchup.
If both players are working equally hard then it's an even matchup by definition.

It is not about knowledge but what actions the player is allowed to take. Matchups where actions are more limited are harder.

Both players may be working equally hard but from the perspective of one player, how hard are you working in that matchup compared to your other ones? For someone focused entirely on winning, ask yourself "would I rather be in the mirror match or a slightly losing matchup" and you will understand what is being factored in to this. When the players wish to avoid the matchup for actual gameplay reasons and not something as simple as "I do not like playing mirror matches"(a common thing I notice with american players) you will understand why one can consider a mirror match "bad" or "good" for analyzing the characters overall strength.
