The Wheel has turned once again
Carrion Woods edition
Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.
The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 3400 units, 1100 spells and 400 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them. It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.
Basically, it's an autistโs wet dream of a war game.

>>529091939Boots are worth 10 gems because you can use them to fly commanders between bases repeatedly. A shroud is permanently stuck to one commander.
When a flying unit attacks a mounted unit, does it still have to obey the standard reach formula to hit the rider?
>>529091939You use pearls for fucking everything, though. You need them for items, for rituals, for battle magic. Astral bias in this game is extremely real and one pearl is probably worth at least 2 of anything else for most nations.
>>529095394Astral is alright if you want to cast blink or forge thug items but water gems are the real ruler of this game.

https://beta.blitzserver.net/game/639#status
https://beta.blitzserver.net/game/639#status
>>529133657Are there nations that are stronger in vanilla than in sloops
>>529135308yes, relative to other nations, because the favoritism in slops is undeniable.
>>529135651What favoritism is there in sloops?
>>529135702He DARES to buff the worse nations in his balance mod
>>529133213fucking moose goblins
>>529135702to create a fair balance mod for dominions one must master all nations in the game and adjust them accordingly. fact. this is undeniable.
without this, an attempt at balancing the game is futile and when faced with the choice between a skewed unbalanced mod or unbalanced vanilla, the choice is obvious.
alas, slops doesnt even play the game to begin with.
>>529135895It mainly just touches on the vanilla spells tho
>>529135895Sloops might not balanced but vanilla sure as fuck isn't either, I just like that more tendies are useful and the starter armies are unshittified.
Keep in mind that this retard admitted he hates sloops because he "doesn't want to learn the game a second time"
>every antislop post is 1 person
the hubris to even think you could even remotely "balance" dominions when youre not even playing the game is most incredible
>>529136221Ah, but you see, I am a second antislopper and I attack it on eschatological grounds because I don't want to detract from true canonical ascension of my tendie
I'm anti sloop only because sometimes I actually want to play a bad nation.
Can't have slops tuning up my shitter nations like Jomon or Berytos
>>529137320How is Berytos bad? They have sailing and elephants
Since research happens before battles, does that mean a mage scripted to cast spells may use the newly researched spells?
>>529137804You can't script them obviously but they will cast them off script yes
>>529137465Their scales troops are garbage. Elephants have too many weaknesses to rely on in even a first war. but they can just about get you through expansion. Their sacreds are just ok. If they don't get a wasteland to make a lab on they never get access to their best feature the goat summons.
Sailing can make a difference on some maps, but they can't even sail with elephants or their sacreds anyway. Neither can their best mage sail. It's awkward as fuck to play.
>>529137979Oh they can actually sail with their sacred troops now at least in 6, assuming you don't take larger bless, which is actually pretty good for them otherwise. Brides in waiting still cant sail though
>>529137465>>529137320its striking how often the sloopsfag is the player who doesn't understand the game, truly it is the preferred way for /domg/ veterans to play
When 'advance and cast spells' says 'the front' does it mean dead center of the battle field, or the farthest forward you could place troops? (0 vs 13 in)
>>529135702Construction, earth path, forge bonus are blatant examples that have been brought up multiple times. Sloop has never addressed why an already strong school of magic needs shitloads of buffs in the area it's weak at while the area it's already strong gets no nerfs to keep it from being power creeped, despite being challenged on it multiple times.
He also terribly undercosts elemental damage blesses because he thinks dom6 is dom 5 and everyone is still running mass resist imprison rainbows, so when going into SCBM you have to make it a conscious point not to do any kind of strategy that struggles with magical sacreds because you have nonsensical stuff like non-incarnate death explosion in the mod.
What's the best unit that can come out of a Tartarian gate?
>>529136609if shitwinter is god
then the best one can hope for is nonexistence after death
imagine the afterlife being designed by illwinter...

>>529144928Just be buried with some AoE items
I just stole the Throne of Secrets from the Arco AI. Enjoy free graphs.
>>529140521>const>strong>death explosion>relevant everthis is what sets domg veterans apart
>>529156456Const is strong. Have you ever played a nation that didn't want it?
It's strong because its the tech/greed tree. Not because it wins you battles early on. Path and research boosters alone are huge in the long run. Just gotta know the right time to research it
>>529144507Guy who gives your provinces away to MA Ermor
>>529156456I get Death Explosion is a meme bless, but const contains so many goodies even if you're not thugging. Path boosters, mobility enhancers, spell penetration bonuses.
>>529159386Most paths get you some spells or another, and which ones you get depend on what spells you need. Unfortunately construction is the ONLY path that gives you items, so if you want to do any strategy that requires items; thugging, supercombating, path boosting mages without wasting their turns on empowerment, you NEED Construction
>>529159386>>529160056*spams eles and kills you year 1*
okay what's your const 5 answer?
>>529156456>construction>not strong>free non incarnate magic damage>irrelevantDiscord veteran detected.
>>529160937I guess hellbless is the only way to play the game because it'll reliably win its first war.
>>529160937I would just not research const until my position felt safe enough to do so. Like when I'm nearing the end of my first war maybe and my neighbours look busy. You should only rush const research if you have at least a defensive titan to kit out or maybe fat thugs like ma phlegra. Even then I'd probably want some alt first.
The one singular path in the game that literally every single nation must research by lategame is bad, guys.
>>529160937That's how the game works. You need to figure out what to research and when. Skip out on Evocation and you lack a reliable way to turn mages into killing power. Avoid Construction and your enemies will outscale you once they get their gem/blood economy running and the boosters start getting cranked out.
>strategy game player thinks the greed option is strong compared to the early game power option
true veterancy at play
>>529162475>A path is only good if you want to research it from turn 1What a shallow mind you have. Just tell us when was the last time you played mp and never researched const at all. Games where you went ai on turn 6 don't count.
>>529162728>path le OP because it has... eventual utility!this dude's dying to ulm
>>529162728He's being intentionally disingenuous because he also knows construction is overtuned in SCBM.
>>529162475>Research Alt 4>Well, time to declare war on the rest of the world.
>>529162979You gonna make an argument or is this going to be another episode of screaming fallacies for 2 hours straight like yesterday?
This guy really comes here and spams the dumbest takes while calling people domg veterans every time, huh?
when my nation has access to research boosters i immediately research construction to forge those to research everything else faster because the earlier you get those boosters the more powerful they are.
>>529164523If you can get away with it why not? Probably even ideal on some hellbless nations
>>529161250Vs domg vets this is 100% true.
>>529164523If you nation has some combination of air, death, fire, glamour, earth then construction research basically pays for itself with boosters. 5 owl quills replicate construction 3's research cost in 12 turns. 2 skull mentors (also const 3 in SCBM) replicate construction 3's research cost in 13 turns.
If your nation has blood or wants to bootstrap blood then you are required to research construction for your blood economy to be efficient.
If your nation does communions then master matrices are one of the best ways to plug new paths into your communions and immediately access high path spells from said path.
If your nation has water then construction is how you get your non-amphibious mages to go underwater or leave the underwater.
So construction is basically bad if... You're mono-nature, and don't want thistle maces and messenger boots for some retarded reason. Also, I don't know what people mean about research rushing construction being bad. Awake researcher rushing scarlet dowsing rods is the best way to play hellbless lanka.
>>529166527Soldiers of steel is pretty nice too
>>529167025Yeah I didn't even get into the construction rituals, combat magic, or wanting to meet any path requirement over 4 without needing your god to do it for you.
I think it's bullshit that indies get to ignore gem use conditions.
>>529167865Or temp gems, thugs, SCs, counter-thugs/SCs, assassins, reinvigoration, and mobility. Construction is meta-defining.
>I wonder what domg is up to today
>I hope it's more artposting
>it's samefag spam because someone doesn't like a mod
Bro, just host a vanilla game.
>>529169219Be the change you want to see
What is your favorite nation /domg/?
>>529171464LA Pyth, MA Xibalba, EA Therodos
>>529171852Good picks, all the different cults in LA Pyth really give it a lot of replayability, youโd have to be crazy to dislike the muuch, and Therodos has amazing theming.
Do you think archers need a buff?
>>529172168Only to their aiming vs moving targets
>>529172349>get a ton of xbows>on their 2nd attack, they fire at the enemy, predicting where they 'will' be, a good 10 tiles ahead>inadvertently obliterate your own army because it didn't take into account your own troops were literally two tiles away and would stop thembrilliant
Construction is strong because it lets you forge items, something no other path does
Same with blood for blood magic
>>529173456Well I see blood as a tradeoff between the pain of blood hunting and the ease of having all their spells in one research school, and blood is only useful for nations with access to that path. Construction is essential for EVERYONE.
>>529156456const 9 makes you basically unbeatable in a conventional battle if you get the horror harmonica first
>>529173721Yeah pretty much
Globals are kinda weird since they're spread all over
>>529173456Yep, it's basically a core game mechanic which is why it's fundamentally flawed for it to be one specific school. There should be rituals and combat spells to give yourself items in every school. Construction would just be the school that's the best at it. Imagine if every spell that kills enemies in the game were under evocations, and every spell that summons units in the game were in conjuration. That's the current state of Construction.
Pyrene here. I'm tired as shit after work and want to go to sleep. Blitzserver seems to be fucked though so I cant do my turn. I dont want to stale but it is what it is at this point.
Only thaumaturgy lets you do communions though :)
>>529177103>sabbaths>matrices>theurgs
>>529176825Thugs are shit enough compared to dom 5 without spreading all the items over multiple schools.
>>529177215How does an evo 3 air 1 combat spell to equip yourself with a thunder whip nerf thugs?
>>529177580Your plan is too vague, if you start splitting specific types of items into different research paths it makes it cost more research to adapt to situations.
Say the fire resist items are in enchant and cold res items are in alt. What happens if you need to adapt.
Now of course you'll say you wouldnt do that specifically, but if you move any items out of const you have to think about a shitload of balance implications.
Maybe you change it a different way where you just add basic items to other paths now the research opportunity cost of boosters becomes worse, and frankly boosters are fun so I dont want that either.
>>529178428You don't have to split them up. The design space for equipment is big enough that you can duplicate them, like longdead summoning, without chewing into the use case for manually constructed equipment. Especially with things like temporary conjured equipment, or caster-bound ritual summoned equipment.
The basic issue is it's impossible to both utilize the full potential of the equipment mechanic and also have equipment acquisition be construction-exclusive without construction becoming overpowered. For example, it can be fine if construction remains the exclusive method to manufacture permanent, transferable equipment, but if people want more equipment in the game overall then it needs to start being sourced from other schools or mechanics as well.
Hell, I wouldn't even be against there being an item shop the same way you can buy mercs. Or national gold-purchased commander equipment (which would need to be to a much lower efficiency standard, obviously).
I'm pretty sure illwinter doesn't want to expand item use any further simply because items are one of the worst UI nightmares in the game and the more relevant they are the more people will complain for it to be updated/reworked.
>>529179181Frankly I think youd end up doing more harm than good. You can dream I guess. I really don't have any major problems with how construction exists and its power levels anyway. It's not OP in a way that is grossly unfair to any particular nation that much imo.
>>529180078By "how it exists" do you mean vanilla, or do you mean SCBM? Because SCBM clearly does not think construction is fine as is.
>>529180417Always talkin bout vanil
>>529180830We're not really in disagreement then. My point is that construction is already strong in vanilla, so if mods like SCBM want to encourage more item and thug use then they need to do something other than buff construction to get it. The examples I gave on how to do that were just that.
How many gems does a fully searched province in EA typically have? Is it less than 1 per turn?
>>529182728Depends on the province type. I think even plains have more than 1 average in ea. Theres an info graph of all the prov types and their average income that gets posted here sometimes but I cant find it.
>>529178428I think maybe construction should be demolished and items taken out of the research system entirely, make them have their own system separate from research, still tiered and gated, but not competing with research.
>>529183549Making equipment its own tech tree would be justified but there's no way in hell Illwinter is doing that much work.
>>529182728Thrones->wastes andd swamps->forests/mountains/caves>plains>farms
>>529185009In a game now where I'm getting absolutely shafted and these may as well mean nothing.
Every mountain is somehow a farmland mountain mix that don't have E sites.
Every forest searched with Haruspex, nothing, somehow not single N site
But you know what, I have two Pestilence Wells literally adjacent to my cap that I had to spend 8 gems to even 'find' because I have no native D3 mages.
This may honestly be the most shafted I've ever been on gems in my life. Gonna do a big G search soon, and it better give me fuckin' SOMETHING. I BEG.
>>529182728It's a completely random diceroll on how many you can get. And depends on how wide your magic-searching ability is. You might get a lot of glamour and death sites, but you'll get nothing if you don't have those paths.
>>529183529>>529185009Don't listen to these chuds, if you can site-search everything you should. Plains sometimes has 4 or even 5 magic sites for no reason in MA. Awake rainbow chads know this. Also Wastelands and Swamps are always nearly empty in my experience, they have 1 or 2 sites at most. Thrones are a good solid pick for site search and usually yield a decent amount of magic sites.
>>529188589Bitter tears for those who lack awake rainbows.
>>529188589>>529189107That's just percentages of site generation bruh

>>529191227>just searched a fort province>mage has 4 paths, one at 1, the rest all 2 or above>no sites found
>>529194168I have spoken the gospel of plains provinces. Search those above others because Plains provinces are the most numerous, therefore having the greatest chance of magic sites.
>>529194338>fort provinceMy bad. I meant THRONE province. Level 2.
>>529194168>all the magic sites present were outside the 4 magic paths you pickedGacha'd. Should've picked an awake rainbow.
>>529164523you should research something for your mages to cast in actual combat and also something for them to spend gems on you fucking nerd.
These mighty ai armies sure are mighty.
>>529201542>cast darkness>cast cat eyed warriors+damn that ai army sure was tough
>>529201638Well there are plenty of tools to deal with the blobs later on in the game but if you get rushed by multiple of them at once turn 15 you're in for a world of pain.
I don't like site searching with my rainbows because they're such good researchers.
>>529192314I think sparse line is better for naked back line archers to avoid arrows themselves. Either put all your guys in a box with the commanders on the inside, or split them up like the other anon said with the flanks set on hold attack cav orders. If your men are lance fodder then keep them in one big squad so they don't start routing once they get shishkebabbed.
If you don't think you have to worry about arrows and magic and think your men can manage without maximum magic buffs, you could try putting your box formation at the front of the map so that the formation is still together as possible when foot combat starts.
>>529192314>>529202871Also more squads is better if you can feasibly manage it because the AI randomly selects squads to attack. Horses could get all the way around your army but they could still decide to attack into the side of the army rather than commanders that are wide open. There's a balance between amount of squads and larger, tougher squads that won't route upon contact.

>>529228072I didn't have any S1 mages, just the two High Seraphines that managed to not instantly die to bad luck. That was pretty wild. I lost 3 of my heroes before they got to do anything to bad events/unlucky retreat.
As an aside, I'm pretty sad you won the game before I got to meme with the Eagle King. No idea if its been ported properly to 6 though.

The only thing moose riders every get used for seriously is as a bait unit to attract enemy spells with their high hp and low defenses.

But you see the dog costs 10 more recruitment points :)
>>529268198Dogs are borderline op, but the minotaur can't trample them, and thats what you are paying extra for with the unit. Just use crossbows instead
>>529268009they're stealthy, high map move and massable anyforests. they can be a serious pain in the ass to deal with before turn 15 or even 10
I have dealt with early camel riders raids by Na'Ba in a previous game here which are very similar units (excluding the bird) and they basically crippled my entire game by both raiding all my farmlands and diverting my attention, right at the moment I needed gold the most to setup scelerian infrastructure
>>529268821Yeah there's probably other good use cases for them, but frankly if Vaetti is putting that many gold/resources into moose over their other units I'd be happy. Their whole lineup is stealthy too anyway and the wolf riders have the same map move and more use cases imo.
>>529268198Dogs are the best nation in the game rn
>>529268198The senatorial guard is better but defining this through the two units' ability to trade blows is not the right way to look at it. The minotaur is a bruiser that tramples chaff and breaks high defense units, all of which will ideally struggle against 20 prot. Sending it against elite formation fighters with 2-handers and more gold cost per square is a predictable loss.
>>529267013based noob
learn from the elites, not from the sloptards
>>529269104I'm guessing the advantage is moose riders will not really take attrition when massed whereas wolf riders will. either way the right way to look at them imo is as a strategic tool rather than actual units
Do flying units have a greater chance to hit mounted units and not the mount when they are flying in for their first attack? I'm not sure if I dreamt up this fact or not.
>>529270703The moose also has the disadvantage of being harder to buff due to 1 per square, especially if you are doing archer buffs, so in a big battle your money would be better spent on unmounted archers/crossbows if you are going to do that.
Reminder to stay in peak physical condition for optimal dominions play.
>>529139734They will run forward while casting spells and stop about 5 tiles away from the target. They will never stop advancing. If they run out of spell targets, they'll start punching enemies. So yeah they'll go as far as the opposite edge of the battlefield

>it's another "indie archers all fire rear on the priest expansion leader" episode
>and another "5 heavy inf rush to my priest after mostly wrapping around the sacreds" rerun after that
How do you anons reliably protect your expansion priests if they're just dudes in robes? I don't want to bring more sacreds than needed just to protect the priest, but it's annoyingly unreliable if the priest isn't as durable as the units they're leading.
does stuff like fires from afar work on armies inside castles? I know it says its used to "harass defenders of a castle" but idk if that means something like a patrolling force. I thought stuff inside forts was relatively safe
>>529286453This is probably a good situation for making a prophet of a commander with armor and shield (or whatever you have that is tankier than an old man in robes) and sending him out to lead your expansion party
>>529286453>put commander at the back>put troops at the frontArchers don't have enough range to snipe your commander.
As for the other issue, that only happens if you're heavily outnumbered. Use line formation, or bring some extra chaff to cover the flanks.
>>529268198domg veteran insights
>>529287313That's what they get for not putting the priest a single tile farther back.
Longdead have less HP, putting the priest in with the longdead bumps that squares hp to 20 instead of 15, and he's got no armour
instantly gets chosen as the tile to attack by an archer.
>>529287118That works for the first party. I'm worried about the next 4 expansion parties, which are 1 priest leading 6-12 sacreds.
>>529287160>Archers don't have enough range to snipe your commanderI've tried putting my priest and sacreds in the top back corner and these indies will still walk forward to target him over the troops when they feel like it.
>if you're heavily outnumberedBeing outnumbered is the ideal if 1-2 turns recruitment of my roided out sacreds can deal with 10 times their numbers. The problem is I'm not MA Mari or LA Ulm whose priest leaders are souped up heavy cav themselves, so it's harder to keep my priests reliably alive and untargeted than it is for my guys to actually kill the indies.
>>529287313And as you can see, either those troops aren't in the front, or that priest isn't in the back.
>>529288595at that point then it might be worth thinking about a bless like barkskin or a build to help research construction for shields

>>529465701The only non-incarnate magical damage bless in vanilla is Solar Weapons, and for good reason. Why not go ask Sloop to bring back dom5 Magic Weapons if you love unplayable ethereal and invulnerability so much.
>>529514027Withering weapons technically count as well.
>>529514027Wdym by unplayable
>>529472604The AI actually looks like a player and can be quite challenging for newbies. It'll definitely keep you busy for at least a few hours or even a few games, if you're particularly slow.
The problem is that the AI doesn't actually know how to play the game. It just presses buttons at random and mostly recruits hordes upon hordes of trash to throw at you. As soon as you learn how to use a few spells effectively or how to build a mildly effective thug, you'll wreck it and it'll never pose a challenge again, because it can't figure out what you're doing, let alone how to counter it.
Conquest of Elysium is a relatively much simpler game, so the same approach still lets the AI be a bit more of a fair opponent. Despite the tendency to get wrecked by deers turn 1.
>>529521574Play dom 5 and you can find out.

blood bond is nice cause it spreads the damage around for regeneration and i think it triggers berserk, but i think fortitude is proc before blood bond triggers.

I kind of went minor rainbow resist with blur instead of def buffs and relying on blood bond and righteous fury for attack and strength. >>529720931All your summons have spirit sight. I would try to never take imprisoned because you need to have 3E early and grab some hammers for your elementals to forge the sword and armor for cheap. Plus you need to do a lot of site searching for E early.

Sometimes it's something fancy that could justify a degree of that madness, but other times it's literally an old frail man claiming he's got the best ideas, the biggest plans.
The playable nations are fanatics who've gone off the deep end. They're the opposite of smart, rational, thinking people. Notice how every unit and commander has a shitload of stats, but no one has an Intelligence stat.

For me personally it's Thunder Strike. I don't know what it is about TS but it always feels like I'm starting to make shit happen when I hit Evo 4 and start casting it.
>>530008743It depends I guess. Getting Fireball/Thunderstrike to make mages actually matter in fights, then later the big battlefield enchantment(s) (foul vapors/rigor mortis/field of fire etc).
Really though, what makes me feel good is having over 1000 in income every turn while still recruiting a mage in every fort.

This is a betrayal of balance. A crime against symmetry. And now, youโve declared war on me, personally.
Do you understand what you've done? Youโve left a gaping, twitching hole in the heart of the mapโa lawless vacuum, a gift-wrapped power zone, and you expect me to sit quietly while someone else strolls in? No. No, no, no. I won't be complicit in this farce.
You have awoken something ancient. Something vile. Youโve broken the social contract. Youโve spat in the face of the sacred balance. And now I must become the consequence.
I am not a player anymore. I am the natural disaster the game forgot to code. I am the final win condition. I am every unclaimed province screaming in existential terror.
I will retaliate, not with rage, but with pure, surgical calculation. I will metastasize across the map like a beautiful plague. I will befriend my enemies, betray my allies, and sacrifice entire armies just to corner a single unit of yours. I will flood the chat with peace offers while simultaneously engineering seven layers of betrayal. You wonโt even realize youโve already lost until three turns after checkmate. And by then? Itโll be too late.
So go ahead. Donโt restart. Let this monstrosity play out. Let the lucky neighbor sip their free wine and expand like a bloated tick. Just know this:

Lads, I started the game three days ago and it rubs my autism just right. I played as the plant-zombies of Asphodel and only later realized they suck because they have bad forts; apparently you're supposed to use a spell to 'grow' forts instead... And I played as the bug guy, but he died a lot. I thought his death move would make him hard to kill in large-scale battles, but it seemed like the enemies just casted banishment spells on the summoned insects and got rid of him easily.
Anyway my question about that play-through; the black centaur guys are okay spellcasters but also good fighters. How do I know when I should tell them to cast spells and when to tell them to just fight? It looked like if they're on 'cast spells' mode they just pointlessly spam Blessing over and over. (It's probably my fault that my Blessing effects were kinda shit but I don't know what to pick). Isn't there a way to make them fight, but also cast spells when it's a critical moment?
And finally I'm used to Total War, where you throw away your weak undead guys to tire the enemies out, then fight them with your real troops. I thought that was what Asphodel's archetype was trying to do, but it didn't really work. If I put my black minotaurs at the back, they just rout once the chaff is all gone. If I put them toward the front, they run out ahead of everything and die. Do undead unit deaths count toward 'army loss' morale penalty for living units in this game?
>>530179289Undead leaders are notorious pussies and will run away when they see a good chunk of their undead die and leave the rest to desintegrate.
Man's one of those nations that's really good early game then shits itself late game, right?
>>530179289The thing about Dominions is combat and spells are relatively lethal so sustained battles aren't really a thing unless you're a nation that can shit out a ton of chaff continually like death or nature nations. Invest in dudes that can hit hard in the early game since you'll be mainly fighting indies and small armies rather than doomstacks during expansion
>>530179289>throw away your weak undead guys to tire the enemies outYeah you do this, but even on a greater scale. You bring 5 disposable manikins for any 1 unit the enemy has, maybe more if they are a known strong unit. That's what freespawn is all about. You add mages to your army and buff the weak troops so that they don't attrit too many. Then later on in the mid game you send single geared goats in to solo entire armies.
In total war terms, 4 shit 20 stack armies vs 1 army, and later on one man army.
>>530180514Mans just good all around IMO. Those knights of avalon don't really fall off and their path variety is pretty good.
>>530179289One thing worth noting about Asphodel, though you wouldn't realize since you are new, is that their grown fort strategy is probably the most effecient method of fortspam in the game, as you effectively build full labed, templed fortresses for 1 turn of casting time, 600 gold, and 45 nature gems, something Asphodel gets in spades since each temple is +1 nature gem. This, combined with Asphodel not paying salaries for the undead swarms and their best mage being offcap, means they can output a tremendous amount of mages, with the only restriction being money, and they can convert their best mages to undead later via twiceborn rituals.
Army wise Asphodel starts off just throwing massive hordes of chaff at everything that moves, and like most nations wants to evolve to more complex strategies in the midgame. Being almost entirely undead, a fully dead army of Asphodel can cast spells like Rigor Mortis or Foul Vapors without fearing it will kill their own units, while those spells will fully exterminate any non undead non poison resistant army they come across, allowing the chaff to just hold up the army until the enemy collapses. Asphodel also has great thugging potential (sending a single kitted hero unit to either solo clear provinces or help beef up an army. You want to use pans for this, use the living ones to avoid Dust to Dust spam. Overall though Asphodel is a fairly complicated nation to learn dominions on, since its a half living half dead nation with a ton of unique national spells and strategies. I'd recommend something simpler like Abyisa, Middle Age Ulm, or if you want to continue being undead, try Ermor.
>>530183316Yeah Rituals and kitting heroes are the parts I can't wrap my head around so far. I'd love to figure out how to expand more effectively without needing to bring a whole army.
So with these forts are you supposed to build them right by eachother, since the admin% is so low? In my first game I had spread them out, especially away from the capital.
I started playing LA Atlantis, it's really good. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with the Dom4 pretenders though? Like which rituals are good, which items to craft? I feel like the dom1 little guys are more my style.
>>530180514Say that to my Unicorns face
How do I get mileage out of my units as a giant nation in the late game?
>>530188892>late gameYou already lost, just get raped by human mages o algo
>>530182813I'd argue their base mages suck
>>530184316As someone who's also fairly new (completed 2 games so far - got raped lategame in one and rugpulled before I really got to fight anyone in the other - and am currently engaged in 4 more) seeing what other people are doing is probably the most helpful learning tool. In my limited experience to your question:
>forts are primarily for creating national units, their strategic value is mainly just to slow down/kill a doomstackIn other words you build forts to make more mages or otherwise strong units you can't recruit elsewhere. Since armies can just waltz right by them they aren't usually very effective roadblocks. Building more than you can recruit in is usually a waste of gold. Exceptions exist in situations where you want to constantly add units to one province.
>summoning line units via conjuration is done only in the early game to buff up weaker armies, to add army strength for busting forts/going underwater/going into caves or as an act of desperationPeople mostly save their gems for the big, expensive summons that give them a mage with paths they need.
>items are almost exclusively for path boosting and adding good defenses, like ethereal, to important units, although research boosters are also goodBasically you aim to make your thug unkillable or your mage able to cast a better spell/survive an arrow to the head. Some of the Const 9 items are bullshit game winners if you can make them.
>nobody really bothers with damage rituals that aren't Mind Hunt>"make units at enemy location" is useless>global enchantments that give more gems win you the gameGems are king. If you have the most gems you probably win.
Real /domg/ veterans are free to correct me if they haven't already gone AI.
>>530192217Well you got to have something good to buy with gems
>>530196317Yeah you also need the research. Really you need everything. I've played very few other games where I felt as constantly stressed about the shit I don't have that I feel like I should have. Still, it seems like the guy who gets Mother Oak and/or Astral Geyser up is also the guy who's probably going to roll over you with a 2000 strong army that has so much going on you don't even know how to begin countering it, most of the time.
>>530184316Forts draw resources from every neighboring tile, which generally means you don't want them to share the same circle around themselves if you can avoid it, as you lose production in the long run by doing that. Its better to spread out your forts unless your nation doesn't care about production, in which case fill your cap circle with them. I believe forts also increase income, so its worth building them on high population provinces, as that gives them more base recruitment points and gives a higher income bonus.
Rituals is just a matter of learning the magic, you won't understand it at first because theres a ton of it and most is fairly niche. What rituals are good varies depending both on national spells (like Asphodel's essential fort production one) and available paths. I'd recommend asking on a per-path basis.
As for expand effeciently, take a dom2 for really fast expansion. Some nations can expand fairly quick with small parties using a powerful bless, I'll point at MA Man and their Knights of Avalon or MA Marignon and their Chalice Knights (with a powerful bless) as examples. Others struggle more, which makes taking an awake expanding dom2 monster pretender better.
Dom4 pretenders are things you generally take for one of a few reasons. If you intend to do powerful incarnate blesses, they are often the most efficient chassis, if you don't care about not being able to move. They are fairly inexpensive for the magical abilities they have, so some nations who need a really strong bless favor dom4s. Dom4s are also pretty good ritual or research casters, since that doesn't require them to leave the capital. Lastly, a lot of dom4s, though not those with the unteleportable trait, can become late game death machines with the right paths. The Monolith, for example, can be used to teleport into enemy provinces and cast battlefield clearing magic, while being very difficult to kill due to being a fucking rock.
>>530192217Summoning line units, even for nations without good national summons, is often favored in the later stages of the game since a lot of those summons absolutely fuck when buffed, or at least fill holes your national troops cannot.
Items are great for pathboosting but there are plenty you just want for thugging, and thugging is an extremely efficient strategy.
Damage rituals again you are wrong, mind hunt is good but shit like seeking arrow, murdering winter, and flames from the sky are all good. Fires from afar sucks ass.
Make enemies at enemy location is good if they aren't religious about PD dumps, since you can spam it and take half their lands in the magic phase. You don't use it to kill armies, you use it to take undefended lands in the backline and rape their economy.
Piggybacking on the giant question
When playing Mekone or the Phlegras, do I just shit out forts to get as many Giant Hoplites that I can, while just bumrushing Gigantomachia?
Like fuck me man i think the nation is the dopest shit around but i am not understanding giant 101
>Join a discord game because I'm sick of stalers and noskill vets on /domg/
>Get 2v1'd turn 7 because I didn't diplomance.my neighbors
Why are the multiplayer communities so shit for this game? I'm in this eternal dilemma of swapping between here and discord because of aforementioned reasons.
>>530200053I get the idea of the summon units spells, but it seems like it just doesn't happen. They just teleport/fly/trapeze/etc a thug that doesn't care about PD instead.
I also haven't personally seen any of the damage rituals you mentioned get cast in any significant capacity, though massing seeking arrows seems like it should be good to murder mages.
>>530201886have you considered the possibility that instead of everyone else being shit, it is actually you whomst're shit?
join tournaments or something not my problem
>>530202067you're meant to use those summoned units in your actual armies and buff them up. even 20/30 can easily swing a battle for you
murdering winter gets cast almost every game to great effect, flames from the skies is rarer because you need actual powerhouses duking it out turn 70+ and most games end before then
>>530202479Considering that I've only won domg games, I fully agree that I might be shit. Dilemma still stands nonetheless.

>>530206114The armor design is awful (anime stylized cavalry samurai armor as generic infantry armor, shoulders and chest exposed, boob armor), but other than that it looks pretty nice.
>>530206338This looks quite uninspired, though. It's very noticeable that you just rotated the arms and it doesn't work. Suddenly her right arm is a lot shorter and her left arm is fucking long.
Together with the body position, it just doesn't look at all like she's attacking. And you should, at least, add the other side of the sword's guard.
>>530206114>>530206338Looks great and cummable, all that matters in the end
>>530206882I could have sworn I added the other side of the guard in. I guess I hit undo a few too many times at some point.
>>530202067Most summoned units suck ass, but a lot of them are absolutely game changing for an army. I'll give a few of my favorites here.
Wights: Hard to kill rapey undead with withering weapons inbuilt. Can make a powerful cold aura producing core to a larger force.
Lamias: Regenerating infantry which can hold a frontline shockingly well after buffs.
Spring Hawks: One of the best units in the game, an amazing counter to non lightning res thug, and a powerful tool if mixed with other flyers and dropped on a backline of mages.
Summer Lions: Ethereal lions with a heat aura which can easily take out mundane infantry en masse with minimal casualties.
Kydnids: Awe infantry with amphibious capabilities.
Most of these are conj 5 or below, and summoning them can really add a lot to your army that your opponent might not be ready to deal with yet. You don't need to make a full army of them, just a few casts can bulk up a force from a 50/50 to a stomp.
>>530209978I actually meant the "summon dudes into provinces" spells, but after two people misinterpreted it I must accept that I wasn't being clear. Thanks for the tip anyway - I'd been eyeballing all the ones you mentioned, actually.
Am I wrong to think that you generally use your "extra" gems on this kind of stuff? Like as a heavy D nation I'm probably going to be ejaculating my D on skull mentors and skull staffs and various other skull stuff, but I might have a bunch of N laying around to use on Lamias? Or should I be prioritizing the better units?
>>530210739They're still pretty decent. Either your opponent goes hard on PD, wasting a lot of money (in that case, just make a couple thugs to make him regret it), or they kept PD light and you can immediately steal a province. Then you can move the commander you get to take more provinces, or pillage the one you already took to get some extra money and deny gold and recruiting even after the province gets recaptured.
Sure they're rather useless for, say, Caelum, but if you're playing a rather slow moving faction that doesn't do raiding well, they're a great addition to your toolbox.
>>530209978How about anons, tarrasques, and ancient spirits?
>>530192217>engaged in 4 moreDid you have previous experience? You must be either very brave, very smart or very well-researched to be able to compete in these.
>make your thug unkillablecould you please explain on this?
>>530199697>nations who need a really strong blessWhat are the good blesses I should be looking out for? Just one or two examples would be good.
>battlefield clearing magicWhich spell/domain is this? Overall I'm trying to learn which domain levels are the 'break points' and how much I need in terms of research investments. Like, people are mentioning to empower up your mages to make them good; is it better to have several strong mages than one godlike mage?
>>530216397>You must be either very brave, very smart or very well-researched to be able to compete in these.I'm not any of these things. I read the two screenshot Dominions LPs on the SA archives, went "looks cool man," bought Dominions 4, played singleplayer for 300 hours, and then didn't touch the game again until about 3 months ago when I started joining every 4chan game that was not LA. I pick a new nation and build a new tendie for it for every game to see how I like it. People exaggerate how much you'll get fucked over in MP, at least in my experience. /domg/ has been pretty cool guys in-game. Give it a try the next time one gets posted, it'll be fine.
I'm kind of shit at thugs too, other than knowing that autocast spell item = good and that you want it to be a golem, ideally, because being mindless and inanimate while also casting spells and having full item slots is OP. You want a weapon that can kill more than one dude at a time and resistance/invulnerability (not literal invulnerability) against whatever spells the guy you're raiding is trying to kill you with.
>>530218192So can I assume this won't happen until you have like... Construction 5 at the very least? Those sound like powerful items
>>530219275Depends. Golems are expensive but are in the construction school. A lot of good thug chassis like oni shugo or ponies have magic paths built in
Hostfags try not setting cataclysm to turn 50
>>530221719what happens at the cataclysm? haven't made it to turn 91 in one of my game's yet.
>>530221796Thrones get eaten by doom horrors, all provinces get 60-150 unrest, horrors assassinate your commanders, heroes and God. And a sprinkle of misfortune.
Pyrene TC please take it I want a turn before work.
>>530221796>>530222624I don't know why people turn it on. Doesn't it work like arcane corruption? It seems like that'd just slow the game down even more.
>>530209978Pale riders gets an honorable mention, though now that wights are actually pretty good value I think they've fallen off a tad.
Reanimation is surprisingly good during expansion phase.
If you're counting batsums I don't see many people use lammashtas which surprises me since they're incredible (they might get a bad rep from the days when they spawned on top of your casting mage and caused him to route).
>>530202067>I also haven't personally seen any of the damage rituals you mentioned get cast in any significant capacityManifestation, ghost riders, and leprosy are all extremely good late game and I get a lot of work out of them. Arouse hunger is expensive, and can bounce off not that much PD, but being only alteration 4 makes it very valuable.
Keeping in mind this is all assuming SCBM, balance in vanilla is pretty awful. Some of this applies, some of it doesn't.
>>530225006Thrones get eaten by doom horrors = the game will end in a few turns at best. But yes, people just turtle with their armies trying to kill the horrors coming instead of actually playing and the winner is decided by rng

#1: Generic "Giant" Bless: Fortitude + Regen. This is best on Giant sacreds, ideally ones with over 60 HP. Fortitude is Earth 7, Regen is nature 7. This is great on things like EA Niefel/Muspel Giants or MA Ashdod. This is a defensive bless, focused on utilizing Giants massive hitpools to make them extremely difficult to conventionally kill, especially when further buffed in battle with protection.
#2: Imprisoned hellbless. This focuses on making sacreds immune or resistant to midgame magic, and more difficult to kill generally. A favorite of mine is 1x point frost res, 1x point fire res, 1x point poison res, 2x lightning res, enchanted blood, and 5 stacks of undying, and blood surge. This makes your sacreds better once they get a kill, gives them a bonus 10 hitpoints, gives them slight regen and immunity to bleeding, and makes them highly resistant to most forms of battlefield evo. Nations I use this on would be LA Agartha and MA Marignon, both of whom need some scales but also have a recruit anywhere sacred with high base protection.
#3: Quickness killbless. This focuses on making a sacred which isn't innately survivable better and faster at killing, so that it spends less time getting killed and wipes an enemy faster. Quickness, 2x strength, lightning weapons, blood surge. This is something I'd consider on nations like Mictlan or Nazca.
Not all of these are true hellblesses, but they are examples I personally like. Not every nation needs a hellbless either.
That Morg Princess vs Malika fight was nuts
I'm workshopping a nation based on everything having promotions and want it's magic to focus on buffing the weaker troops to improve their survival. What paths do you think offer the best options?
Help, this is important. How do I expand into a swamp with 30~ longdead horsemen?
>>530243667Recruit a bunch of trash to eat the charge, then bring in your heavy hitters to sweep them up. What nation are you playing?
>scales cuck
uh...um...surely my +10% income will make a huge difference this game!!
>expanderchads
heh, looks like i'm taking ANOTHER capital
>>530250647Awake is good but it has limits. If you meet a dormant guardian waiting you are absolutely cucked when you can't blitzkrieg the enemy.
>>530250647>dude you don't understand, all the games I rage quit don't count
>>530243667Get some cheap mercenaries to stand in front
>>530253431what about imprisoned, is imprisoned playable?
>>530253431You gain an early gold advantage that lets you put up infrastructure faster, then you maintain that gold advantage with your larger prov count that lets you make use of that increased military production.
An awake expander (no hellbless) is actually the best position to be in vs a dormant defender unless your hellbless is capable of overwhelming it in its own dominion. The tier list vs a dormant defender is something like overwhelming hellbless > awake expander > scales and/or non-hell rainbow > your own dormant defender > countered hellbless (unless the hellbless is on a strong, teleporting immobile that you can ambush the enemy defender with).
do you guys gamble on your first time with the unscouted attack?
>>530254894Imprisoned is best with a bless of some kind, anything from medium to hell. Even on scales nation, pure imprisoned scales is almost never ideal.
>>530261034imprisoned prod/order scales should allow for a fuckton of recruitment and sacreds early on
with a strong bless they should hold the line
then again i play SP and dont know just how hard a hellbless legion hits
>>530253483NTA, but going AI when you've lost the momentum is simply logical. I play games for my enjoyment, and I don't particularly enjoy getting cucked. There is no ragequit involved, it's simply calculation of "can I recover from this with my momentum intact?", if not->go AI.
>>530256721Always. If it fizzles into heavy cavalry simply go AI.
>>530206882>it just doesn't look at all like she's attackingUhh, have you seen the vanilla sprites? Half of them just throw their arms up as an 'attack'.

>>530264632>competitiveIf I had played that long and I still haven't figured out how to have fun, I would quit
>>530262482It Depends heavily on the nation: how good the sacreds are, how good the non-sacreds are, how good the imprisoned bless choices are on those sacreds and how much order/prod come into play if at all (some nations are almost never rec capped on their best troops, fewer nations are almost never res capped).
>>530264632Just a joke, please don't give up on the thread now

you gotta admit that going AI on turn 10 because you lost 30 units is retarded. oh shit, youre gonna have 4 less provinces than you'd autistically mapped out on an excel sheet and now your timeline to cast astral geyser by turn 35 isn't gonna work and you won't be able to have enough golems on turn 70 to beat any theoretical force in the entire game, better just give up! suck it up and play the game BITCH.

>>530201886>Get 2v1'd turn 7 because I didn't diplomance.my neighbors/domg/ doesn't diplo because it's a bunch of extra spergy and hostile anons who can only use the annoying and delayed in-game messaging for diplo, but it makes perfect sense why a dominions community with instant messaging that gives slightly more of a fuck about their turns would work out NAPs. NAPs are how you know it's "safe" to wage a war.
Being the one neighbor who doesn't call to settle a border and NAP is like dropping the soap, telling everyone to file out and having one guy who stays in the shower staring at your ass. You think he's gonna rape you if you attack anyone else, so you rape him first, preferably after recruiting someone else to hold him down.
>>530263448cucked mentality
>>530263448>>530281825It's a question of willpower, anons. You just have to take that one loss and ignore the bad feeling deep down. Once you shift gears, even a losing game is fun.
>>530279256/domg/ vets are a special breed of diplo.
Ask a normal person a question over discord, they'll usually respond with a yes, no, or be way too wordy.
You can spot the vet because instead of responding in discord, they instead send a paragraph calling you a discord tranny in game while also having not answered whatever you asked in the first place.
Funny, but makes them a 'kill me first' liability because they lack basic social skills.

>>530293180Honestly some of the most fun I have are siege defense battles.
As an AoEII Black Forest map enjoyer, nothing makes me happier.
>>530279256NAPs are a shit mechanic because they are based on out-of-game reputation. All the discord people openly threaten to take notes on who NAP breaks them and remember that in future games. Binding NAPs are even worse because they are full of loopholes and you can't "break" the nap in retaliation for someone exploiting them.
>>530287942Least passive aggressive discord sister.
>>530295608They're fun if you're on equal footing or the guy stomping the other one not so fun otherwise
>>530295608Winning a game is obviously great, but being the reason somebody else loses because you went down swinging is pretty great too.
>>530296765>NAPs are a shit mechanic because they are based on out-of-game reputation.I mean not entirely, it's usually pretty easy to tell in game when somebody has a good reason to NAP break you without knowing anything about the players, and pretty much every game has a "diplomacy not binding" rule on it even in discord. You wont become a pariah for nap breaking unless you are doing it literally every time and you constantly brag about it, which wouldnt even make sense to do from an in game strategic perspective.
No trying to write off all the discord bullshit that comes with the game, it definitely exists to varying degrees depending on the server, but I feel like you have to play so many games and break so many naps before you are ever at a community based disadvantage because of it. I play here and on discord and I don't think I've ended up playing against the same player more twice ever anyway.
Saying that I almost never ask for NAPS unless its extremely advantageous for me and the other guy seems dumb enough to accept it. I usually only accept them when the guy offering was somebody I never intended to fight anyway too and theres almost no chance I'd need to NAP break to win the game anyway.
Also nap breaks for throne rushes/defenses are pretty much always accepted as moral no matter where you play.
I sincerely hope this end of the game play works
>>530296765>Least passive aggressive discord sister.Listen up libtard, this is TRUMPs America now. In this country we look our neighbors square in the eye, give'm a firm handshake, and call them an informative slur to make our diplomatic intentions known.

>>530282546>Once you shift gears, even a losing game is fun.crushing a hubristic asshole that thought he beat you after one big battle is what this game is about
>>530306269You can use transform to (probably) remove upkeep from high upkeep mages.
You can also twiceborn them and suicide them to remove upkeep.
You could also put a shroud on a mage to make it sacred to reduce its upkeep but this probably isn't worth doing unless you need that mage to be sacred for something else.

>>530311671the consequences of your actions should be limited to the game, not carry over to others. and if you can get away with being a nigger and win the game like that, props to you. nothing wrong with that, you played the ascension war as intended in the lore
>>530316556>the consequences of your actions should be limited to the game, not carry over to othersWhile I agree, you have to really play a shitload of games on just 1 discord for that to even statistically happen. 98% of the time you aren't replaying anybody unless you go out of your way too
>>530316979I don't think this game has enough of a playerbase for that to be true. How many games do we have running here right now?
Even assuming every player is only in a single game, which is very obviously not the case, we're probably like 200 people here tops. More likely something like 50-100
>>530318043I've played mp since dom 5 launched. I only know of 2 people I've played against more than once. I'm not sure how many games I've played tbf, but I play about half my games here and half on whatever discord has a ruleset I want to play looking for players.

>>530356663Literally useless. Yomi has a lot of good sacred units, amazing thugs, and terrible scalestroops, you want to be dumping scales to get those sacred thugs as powerful as they can be. My favorite Yomi build dumps every scale except magic, on a dom1, in exchange for fortitude, regen, 1 point lightning res, and unholy weapons. Fortitude + Regen makes Dai Oni basically immortal early game, lightning res gives them full boat resistances, and unholy weapons means that your shikome summons can kill anything that Dai Oni struggle against.

Expansion in both my games is stalling. Got blown out a couple times on indies, one on turn one blind invasion and another when i routed at like 75% strength.
I'm really glad I didn't tank my production scales on Rus, should have a couple of castles ready soon between Rus and Tien-Chi.

Gotta say, I don't like being capped at 2 on scales. New bless system is interesting, kinna sucks you lose a point for each path, but being able to put points in whatever you want is killer. Some of the requirements seem a lot steeper now and stuff like barkskin, ironskin, stoneskin seems to have been nerfed a bit, but at least there is a mass stoneskin spell now.
Its harder to do rainbow blesses and get big blesses now because of incarnate and losing a point for every path, feel like i'm waiting on sloop or someone to add more pretenders cause there don't seem to be that many.
