The easiest way is to swipe during race intro and see other uma's stats and copy them. You generally don't need high stats this early. Just make sure your stamina is adequate so your hors dont die mid race (200 for short, 300 for medium, 400-500 for long).

Sadly, late chasers are pretty hard to train because they WILL get easily stuck behind the pack. You need to have a lot of mainly int, some power, even skills, and some luck to really start preventing the death stack of mob umas from blocking you in.
