Yes, gil actually has value. There are ways in the early game to get yourself pocket money to help start out but its just that, pocket money to help get low level gear and travel.

Casters can seem very intimidating with spells and spell training and such, but they are highly sought after and crucial to any encounter. If you wanna familiarize yourself with the games combat, any melee will do till you feel comfortable with picking a caster and diving in.

Main issue with casters is the cost of spells early on can really slow down progression before you have any real money making scheme. Melees still have to pay for gear but they can at least farm more quickly and can resell gear they no longer need.

Hows horizon doing? I stopped around 45 like a year ago cause it was too hard to find groups to grind anything, is it worse now or better?

Of the starting ones just take warrior up first. When you get to level 18 you'll take a quest to unlock your subjob which is required. Then you're going to want to get monk up to 17 so you can use it as a sub while you finish taking warrior to 37.
At level 30 you can begin unlocking advanced jobs too.
The caveat of all this is it's generally not easy for damage dealing jobs to find groups, but it's much easier to progress as them as a first job because it's easier to make money solo and they only have gear costs to worry about. Beastmaster is a great option to have for making money because you can bstburn a lot of the bcnm's which are arenas you access with the beastmen seals you get while levelling.

Haven't tried retail, but heard the main problem with retail is that it's an abysmal early game experience, 99% of the player base is doing endgame shit, you can do basically anything up until that point, but it will be with Trusts (bots) and not real players unless you manage to bring a group of friends in.

Retail has a ton of QoL things and all the content is there as you progress. But endgame, depending on your world, is either taken over by mercs and people who abuse mutli-box accounts or is very cliche based as you are someone from scratch who has yet to have proper gear and time and getting into groups is borderline impossible.
