single rolls
pros: we can hit the character on the first roll and save the remaining jade.
cons: we lost 1x purple every 10 rolls we miss.

character drop rate is 5%, so the chance we find our character within the first 10 rolls is 41%, within the first 20 rolls: 65%, within the first 30 rolls: 79%, etc.
50th percentile of luck will find a gacha character on roll 13 or 14. saving on average 5 rolls compared a whale who has to roll 2x 9 rolls.
if you want a specific character on the rate up, it'll be double that, 26-28 rolls on average.
if you want 1x of any character, it is clearly better to roll 1 at a time (assuming your goal is to min max jade count). if you want the rate up, the numbers add up just right to make 9 rolls worth more for the 50th percentile lucklet. (3x 9 rolls are 27 rolls, exactly in the range for the 50% lucklet)
if youre even more unlucky, then you should just roll 9 rolls, and if you're lucky you can consider single rolls.
in the long term, the positive EV for rate ups is to 9 roll rather than to single roll, but in short term single rolls are preferable.

Overall, It was like trying to play a VN blind and you can't savescum or look up guides or use items/cheats to get them to stop being assholes. All for a shitty 4,095/4,096 chance to be disappointed in a worthless shiny legendary. Even just going for Pokedex completion is hell, let alone getting any perfects/shinies. Because those same casuals would get picky about what they would take for some regional shitmon.
