Hi! I'm making this post because I’ve noticed that many in the community believe the Artifact Portal mirror match is entirely decided by external factors—like who gets the extra play point by going second, or who draws more Orchis cards after turn 8. In my opinion, this view is mistaken, and the importance of those factors is being heavily exaggerated.

I'm currently ranked B3 and playing in Diamond, with over 70% of my points earned at that level. Based on my experience in nearly 100 Diamond matches, most wins and losses are determined by player skill. Only a few games are truly decided by things outside your control—this is especially true in Portal mirrors.

More important than playing Aloutte on turn 5 or Orchis on turn 8 (which are undoubtedly strong plays) is being able to anticipate your opponent’s next 1–2 turns and act accordingly. Sometimes, the best play is the most unconventional: like using an evolve point on a 1/3 on turn 4 to force your opponent Aloutte to summon Gamma instead of Beta, holding onto Orchis on turn 8 and developing your hand’s artifact count instead, or even passing a turn entirely so you can outlast your opponent resources if things go to late game. I played a suboptimal list with only 2 Orchis and 2 Ralmia because I lacked a third copy and even then I found that most matchups came down on who played better (even now I'm still missing the third Ralmia).

Yes, it’s true that as MMR gets higher players might optimize their plays so well that external factors begin to matter more. But at least in my own experience so far, I can confidently say that over 70% of my losses came from not approaching the matchup in the most effective way or by directly misplaying a turn. And that’s because Shadowverse is a very unforgiving game when it comes to not making optimal plays; one error in the first 3 turns can be enough for you to lose the entire match if your opponent can capitalize.

I have been playing the game for over a week now on both PC and mobile. I am not F2P as I paid $200 for my first deck. Initially, the economy seems to be very bad (500 gold pack price, lower vial from liquefying silvers, and, critically, no liquefy first 3 copies). I thought it would sucks so bad as a F2P player or a low-spender. One week ahead, I changed my mind. The economy is fine and I can enjoy many good decks. In my current opinion, the only thing that need change is the no liquefy first 3 copies rule.

I am not the luckiest player (no 100 packs key jackpot) and neither I do any reroll. Just straight up normal player that buys all crystal package, plus battle pass. Currently, I have 2 top tier, pretty much fully upgraded decks (puppet portalcraft and artifact portalcraft, 3 if you include hybrid). I also have enough vials from extra cards to upgrade my half-baked decks into good viability (ramp dragon, midrange sword, aggro abyss). The only classes where I don't have enough resources to even make half-baked decks are runecraft and havencraft, in which both have very expensive top tier decks (I am absolutely fine with this, F2P players and low-spenders aren't supposed to have everything). Finally, I have around 7000 gold that I save for next expansion (that is still growing everyday) as I am satisfied enough with my current collection.

So far so good. I am having a blast with this game and I have variety of viable decks. So, what happens that suddenly change my mind and my perspective on the economy? It turns out that the economy is REALLY supported by the freebies that Cygames give (Daily packs, park keys, events, events, events (many of them), bonus packs from here and there, and recently, 3 free legendary packs). So, as long as Cygames keep pumping up these freebies, I think the economy is going to be fine.

As much as I hate the no liquefy first 3 copies rule (and expensive cosmetics lol), I can't give the game negative review anymore.

Honestly I’m just having a lot of fun with this game and wanted to post something positive about it after seeing all the negative reviews.

I’ll freely admit that I’m not a FTP player, but I haven’t spent a ton (only $200) and I’m really enjoying the fast-paced experience and play styles so far.

I’ve never played the original Shadowverse so I’m not doing a direct comparison here. I will say however that compared to the CCGs/TCGs I’m used to (Hearthstone, MTG including physical) the cost here really doesn’t seem out of line from what I’m accustomed to with this genre. Again, not comparing to the original, just the experience of a totally new player.

I was going to wait longer to write a post like this so I could speak with more gameplay experience, but I have a few decks built with reasonable success and am having a ton of fun, and because I almost didn’t start this game because of some of the negative posts I wanted to write from my experience to encourage other new players to try it out!

this game gave me all the abyss legos but i like hitting face, so i've been running a more aggro-focused abyss deck (+medu/cerb to help deal with bullshit and close games). i managed to get to dia with relative ease, but then i started getting matched with portal about 80% of the time and it's become unplayable, whether it's against puppet, arti or hybrid.
would switching to midrange or even control abyss give me an easier time against this broken craft?

How's the AI with custom decks?
Old AI was pretty competent in SV1 but I think that was due to them being given tailor made decks they could be programmed for.
The current hard mode decks don't quite have the same oomph.
SV1 AI even played around denying vengeance.

Generally it's better to specialize towards the match ups you expect to see than to be ready for everything. More specifically a good basic guideline is 3 copies of cards you want access to on curve or see two copies of during a game, 2 copies of useful cards you don't necessarily need all the time, 1 of silver bullets to prevent you from auto losing situations.

It's midrange. In every game, you have to figure out who's the beatdown. If you're the beatdown, you rush them to 0 HP like an aggro deck. If the enemy is the beatdown, you play like a control deck until you can burst them down from 10+ HP in one turn.
It can go both under and over enemy decks depending on what you are facing.

To expand on this: how you play entirely depends on the matchup. You pretty much need to separately learn how to pilot the deck against every other deck on the ladder. The learning period takes a while and the deck takes a lot of thought to pilot well, but once you manage it, you can get pretty solid win streaks with it. My biggest winstreak so far was 9x.

Rune is the worst craft to go against because you know that at literally any point of the game they can play Dimension Climb and win by pulling a whole another turn and hand out of their literal asses and that's the opposite of fun. There's no counterplay, there's no strategy, it's literally just gambling and thinking "WOW I SURE HOPE HE DOESN'T PLAY SHIFT THIS TURN OR ELSE IM FINISHED" because you're both at the mercy of the card draw RNG.

With every other craft, you can predict or have an idea of what they might do next turn but it's impossible to tell if the enemy rune bricked or is about to pull some OTK combo out of their asses then proceed to gloat about it.

You might be able to get away with cutting medusas, though they're very useful and it's ideal to have 3x of them. Cerberus is non-negotiable, though - that's by far the best card abyss has and it's your primary win condition. Anything less than 3x Cerberus and the deck doesn't work.
