FEH's biggest problem right now is that it's chained to a mainline series that is effectively dead in the eyes of the public. It's extremely hard to get new players in that situation.
What fans they did have left they've alienated extremely hard with Engage spam and cutting content for the franchise's most popular entry.
It's really hard to understate how badly they fumbled the IP with Engage. They basically killed the community in just one entry.
I wouldn't be surprised if the FE4 remake is real but just got shelved so they could work on a new standalone entry to revive the series. Any remake released right now is dead on arrival and they probably know it.

The game was dead before engage. I love engage and stopped playing during engage spam because FEH is horrible to play.

The game was more about broken unit's than strategy, but at least early years the game was more about strategy. Skill creep was slow and you could run perfectly serviceable F2P stuff and do well. Yea, broken shit exist, but it wasn't every week, it was maybe once every couple months. That broken shit also often had obvious flaws that could be exploited. It was bad, but totally playable.

Around year 5 it became a fucking shit show. Every skill does 5+ things, every character releases totally cracked and broken, team comp became "good stuff" piles, the math of the game was so convoluted you'd need a pen and paper to figure it out. Every release was some new must pull broken shit. The game became insanely stagnant with no new stuff, just the same old events with nothing new. All the new stuff fucking sucked and purposefully was made to either reward a pitiful number of orbs/rewards or if it did reward good shit, it was some awful PvP mode for the whales to indulge in. Gone were the days were a new event meant a massive chunk of orbs to roll on.

Characters get people to play the game, but they don't keep them playing. Yea, you can say "Hey Jim, did you know your favorite character Marth is FEH? You should play it", and he might, but he won't stick around when he gets bombarded by a text box the size of his screen for a SINGLE skill and his Marth he got gets fucking ripped to shreds by every insane unit released in the last 2 months and then he realizes he needs to dump 1000's of dollars to get skills that won't be relevant in 2 months.

Engage was meant to release in Book 4 of FEH, and Book 5 was the subsequent year that would have released Emblems. Canto was obviously meant to be a part of that with Emblem Sigurd, and Book 5 was when Canto debuted.

The problem is obviously the gameplay. New players see the new hero banner reveals and nope the fuck out instantly. Then they realize that of the 1000+ heroes only maybe 90% of them are any good, and to actually use 95% of the roster, they need to roll for like 4+ other unit's (that are much better than their favorite) just to make their favorite even marginally useful.

Old players just naturally leave and FEH hasn't had anything noteworthy to comeback to. No new major feature or crazy events. Only new characters with so many effects they can't even understand what they do. Even if they do want to comeback, the sheer difficulty in trying to relearn the learn new skills and mechanics and heroes is often enough to kill that interest.

So you just have this slow die off. Old players leaving and no new blood to replace them.

Just have them branch it. So like you start with something like FEH Book 1, then that unlocks a Path of Radiance map, a Blazing Blade map, and then also something like FEH Book 6. Then beating PoR gives you a RD map, beating the Blazing Blade map gives you a binding blade map, and beating Book 6 gives you Book 7.
Obviously toss more supports in there. Hopes stepped it up from Warriors, but because most characters already had supports in Houses, they were often only one or two talks. Have it so like each character supports 1/3rd of the overall cast. So like Lyn can support half the lords and then a few minor characters like Nino or Veronica.

Nothing. Games like this have a limited lifespan. They become too complex. Too overwhelming to start or come back to, because of the nature of its content. Some games manage to sustain themselves on having decent writing or interesting concepts/scenarios, but FEH has consistently dropped the ball on being a FE crossover fanservice game. It does nothing interesting with the franchise other than putting its characters in sexy outfits.
People will say oh, no one cares about banners for this or that game, guaranteed flop and whatnot, but that's just /feg/ continent wars shitposting. Truth it, the game was already starting to bleed players even before Engage released. Perhaps if it had been more successful, FEH would have gotten more of a boost from its release, but it's already at a point where EoS is becoming more and more likely in the foreseeable future and not just a meme.

Back a long time ago, we developed a game for the Super Famicom called Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. When you look at the story, the three characters were from a monastery - they were friends, they worked together - and then they have to go to battle against each other. That's almost the same plot as that older game, if you look at that. So we had the image of this old game in mind before - that's maybe our most significant influence on this project.
