This is just the story with any lane that's autos vs spells. If you can push the lane with autos only, due to an attackspeed/base ad advantage you will just out resource the enemy, especially if they try and counter push. League is just in general a game of counter picking. Mid is significantly less bad for it than it use to be but in meta's like s8 it was pretty much impossible to even play if you got hard counterpicked, top is obviously the most notorious for it with lanes having like a 90/10 matchup, at least in the past. I can't comment on anything in the last 2 years but when i hit gm on sup/adc i'd literally just play any teamfighter or cc bot and go even with recall timings and win because of it. Diffusal is great against enemies who spam a lot of spells (e.g. Invoker) but not against enemies who are basically one spell wonders for teamfights so they'll get their shit off before your Diffusal will burn enough mana to shut them down so you want Orchid for people like that. Long term, if you live that long, Diffusal will be better than Orchid because having 0 mana is worse than a purgeable 5 second silence but again, it depends on whether you'll be able to get their mana down that much.

So if you want to stop Magnus from pressing blink RP Skewer into your team, and you can somehow manage to get him while he's hiding out of range, you want Orchid. If you want to take however long it takes to kill Magnus and make sure he can't brawl/fight afterwards, you get Diffusal.
If the enemy team has a support Silencer who presses R once a fight and dies, you want Orchid. If their Silencer is a core who wants to stick around and spam a lot of spells and right-clicks, you get Diffusal.

1v1, Diffusal will always look nicer but you have to think of the 5v5 teamfight implications. But IMO, the ratio is like 9:1 Diffusal to Orchid IMO.

And like any game of it's type mmo or moba if all your friends play one that's the one your playing.
