the songs in th20 seem to be more compositionally complex than zuns other games, even ones as recent as th19, but the melodies feel really weak (stage 1 and its boss) or generic (egypt larper girl's theme, stage 2 theme). the main theme is one of the best renditions of theme of eastern story he's done and i like that zun is using strings more but i'd rather a compositionally basic song with a great melody like love coloured master spark to what he's doing now. at least he's not using elementic/electric drums this time.

I only intended to unlock stage 5 practice mode to join the score thing that anon is running but I ended up going on to 1cc on my first attempt. I don't think I understand the animal gimmick at all but it seems broken as hell. I'll see if I can get a half decent score to put up.

I think the difficulty of LoLK is higher than other games but definitely overblown, you're showered in resources to compensate for any extra challenge. I can't 1cc 11 no matter how many attempts I give it. It was the first 1cc I tried and now it's the last one I have left. I've only gotten to stage 6 twice. Stage 5 feels like an extra stage with what it throws at you. Even Parsee hits me sometimes and I usually can't get by Yuugi without a hit or two. Every run feels like stage 5 ruins me and Orin finishes me off. Any tips at all? I'm only on normal.

ReimuC has the best bomb in the game. If you don't know/don't want to learn how to deal with Orin, she's the shot type that'll bleed the least from her, be it the stage or Orin herself. Several stage sections from Stage 3 to 5 have enough enemies that you'll refill your lost P almost fully.
ReimuA is an old scam from Extra players and higher difficulty players to make you play a harder shot in the context of Survival Normal. The rest of the shots are too weak or have Satori fights that are too hard (ReimuC's has the easiest arguably).

I assume you've gotten the general idea of everything in stage 5 so me going over it wouldn't be much help, but in particular for those parts where you don't have to shoot consider actually killing some fairies because you can probably squeeze out enough power out of them for a bomb, could make the difference for Orin.
Also if you switch to ReimuC like that Anon said make sure to learn how to get past stage 6 without using the gaphag's ability so that you don't suffer a stupid death or start Okuu underpowered.

Okuu's final starts deceptively hard, its a bit of an unconventional final. The density at the beginning is such that, with the suction effect, it's easy to goof up & lose a life. Respect the early phase and you'll get it for sure.
If you're on a game to game marathon, do try to revisit SA eventually. They may be wrong in terms of difficulty, but there is some merit to playing SA as the other shots, makes the victory sweeter and makes you appreciate its stage design some more, plus Satori having different spells.

I’m thinking of developing some kind of 1cc score system to quantify an anon’s success through games. I could go basic and set 2 points for an easy 1cc, 7 for normal, 13 for hard, 20 for lunatic, and variable amounts in extra stages, with a double modifier for a bombless or deathless 1cc and a quadruple modifier for bombless and deathless 1ccs (80 on lunatic), but also I could alter the point system based on relative difficulty and shot types (the glitched Marisa in MoF and Aya on PoFV could be heavily reduced while SA and UFO have an increased set of values).

They're both subjective, but if you don't mind starting with a pc98 game pretty much everyone agrees touhou 4 is the easiest game of the series (although I can't tell about 16+ yet since I've still got to try those).
Otherwise 8 and 6 are both decent picks for starting out, but neither is particularly easy if you're new.

Regarding controllers, I've been using a dualshock 4 (with the ds4windows driver) for about three years and found it mostly fine, but after getting close to Hard-tier skills I've started to get annoyed by how sometimes you get diagonal inputs when just pressing one dpad button, if you press on the edge.
So I tried a few different ones and settled for the 8bitdo M30 (sega genesis style), which I find really good and comfortable. You could also try using an arcade stick, if you're willing to spend some money on a good one. And a few people play on keyboard, which I don't find comfortable but is in theory the ideal way to play thanks to the keys' responsiveness.

It is actually better to start playing without the focus hitbox, so you get used to "feeling" it and looking at the bullets around you instead of relying on it. Also, the characters' sprites already come with a detail on them (like the ribbon on the back for marisa) which lets you figure out where the hitbox is.

As long as you avoid popping it, it actually helps because you can try dodging stuff more boldly with the knowledge that it won't get you killed. The problem with PCB is the fact its patterns are much harder than usual, and for a newfag this isn't compensated enough by the border mechanic so it can make things frustrating. Some people tend to call it easy because sakuya gets 4 bombs and you can clear the game by spamming them, but that's not a great way to improve your skills.

I think LoLK is generally agreed to be the hardest game even if you use Legacy mode. The trio of 1cc hell is definitely 11, 12, 15.

The patterns on 13 are pretty easy, but it only gives you two or three extends during the whole run (depending on how much you manage to optimize the trance usage) so the game ends up about average difficulty overall. Still working through the series getting my normal 1ccs. Over the last three weeks I've nailed UFO, TD and just now DDC.
I practised Shinmy's spells a few times.
>Inchling's Path - Can make my way through about 70% and then usually bomb the rest
>Grow Bigger! - 50/50 on losing a life
>Shining Needle Sword - Kill this spell card with hammers. It took me 50 tries on practise mode to capture it.
>You Grow Bigger! - Can be iffy but 50/50 on losing a life
>Attack on Dwarf - It's sort of like Hoichi the Earless, so it's mainly no problem
>Hop-o'-My-Thumb Seven - This was fun to learn. I eventually learned to start really close to Shinmy and take her down a quarter, then do some green orb dodging before pulling back to do yellow orb dodging. Once the blue ones came in I just bombed it to hell. In practice I realized the arrival of yellow and blue orbs depends on damage done so I thought I could just time it out...until 25 seconds before the end when she got pissed and unleashed the whole thing on me.
I also finally captured Reverse Hierachy in this run.
And also fuck Benben and her stupid note swarm. I know where the hitboxes are but it still fucks me up.

Congrats, I had to sit down in practice to get the hang of Shimmy too before getting the 1ccs. It doesn't sound like you're doing every shot type but Marisa/Sakuya have a tougher you grow bigger and SakuyaB is just a miserable time in general. You also get a different stage 4 boss depending on if you're using the tool or not. Good luck with LoLK if you're just continuing on.

Thanks, I’m going through every game and simply defaulting to Reimu, and usually with the homing shot. Once I finally nail a normal 1cc on all windows games (I cannot be bothered to emulate the pc98 era, though someone on github has an emulated online HRtP which is a janky and painful game), I’ll go back and work on other shot types.
