I like Marc Esserman, but I have a lot more fun playing the open sicilian than the smith-morra.
I wish he'd write a King's Gambit book, though.

Relax, it's not Magnus in the leaked pic. Magnus's purity and integrity is still intact.

From what I understand puzzle rating on chess.scam is meaningless because you don't loose points if you only get the first move right making it little more than a function of how many puzzles you did
Chess tempo is the best for online puzzles followed by lichess, tactics books are even better
Anonymous
7/3/2025, 8:40:02 PM No.529810065
>>529808856
How's your rapid rating? Probably not much better than your blitz (below 1500, let's say), which would indicate that you aren't calculating carefully in your games and are missing simple tactics.
Presumably your puzzle rush or puzzle storm (lichess) scores are low as well, which would mean that your recognition of tactical patterns (or ability to find ideas you haven't seen before and perform a basic calculation to verify them) is too weak/slow.

Generally, the archetype of the high puzzle rating, low elo player comes about because the player is afraid of playing/losing real chess games and just spends their time in the low-stress puzzle solving environment.
There is a lot to learn about chess and how to think about positions that you will not get from tactics puzzles, you need to play games.

I think on lichess I'm around 1300 blitz. I didn't play enough rapid but I guess I'm around 1400. I lose most of my games due to retarded midgame blunders or running out of time. You're right though I never enjoy playing vs people due to stress.

The teams aren't rigid. Whoever shows up will play for your team.
There also isn't a size requirement, anywhere from 1 to 1,000 could participate, but it's a promotion/relegation type of league.
So in the lowest league your top 4 performers count towards your team's point total and if the team finishes high enough in the standings, it gets promoted to the next highest league. As you rise through the leagues, more and more participants count towards the total until you get to the premier league and up to 14 players can count towards your point total there.
It's tough to get that high because some of those teams are very large and can field teams with many titled players.
As I remember, last time we got to about the 8th or 9th league before stalling out. I'm pretty low elo, so I wasn't much of a contributor, but it was fun playing with my /chess/ bros regardless.

I have started doing some puzzles again because I noticed some calculation and evaluation problems during games.

Things have been going better than I would have thought even on the higher rated puzzles (solving on the first try about a third), but the ones like this just make me mad:
https://lichess.org/training/ycpS7
I thought this puzzle was particularly simple, you know play Rh1 at some point, if the d file clears Qd5+ and I was thinking of a line where you could win the rook on c8 with Qb7+ or something like that, so after the d file was cleared I blitzed out Qd5+, which is wrong, and some of the engine lines after the correct move are just incomprehensible to me, for example:
32. ...Rf8, Qh5 Re8, Kh2 Qe6, Bh4 ...
and there a forced mate after 13 moves.

I mean like what the fuck?

The moves in the most accurate line I can understand better:
32. ...Be7, Kh2(???) Bf6, Qh3 Kf8, Rd7 Qg8

I just can't look that deep into the position, sorry? I am doubting anybody can, to be honest. Am I supposed to sit back at some point and evaluate the position for pressure/initiative chances? That doesn't come easily in a puzzle...

that's a 2900 level puzzle anon. Don't feel bad about about not getting its subtleties. This one is especially hard in that there are many plausible moves at each step.

I have good news for you, anon. Each match is only 100 minutes and you can join and leave at any point during the match. Your points will still count for the team total.

Shitters can participate too, there is no penalty for losing. You aren't dragging the team down by playing. Even one draw or win will earn points for the team and at the end the top X performers will count towards our score. It's more important that we get at least the minimum amount of participants to meet the cutoff than it is that we have one or two strong players participate and nobody else. We'll be competing against 9 other teams simultaneously within each league every match so there will be plenty of opportunities to match up against players around your level.

It's a chess league. You play blitz (rotates between 3|0, 3|2, and 5|0) against 9 other teams twice a week on thursdays and sundays and score points for your team. If the team does well, it gets promoted to the next league up. If it does middling, it stays in the same league. If it does poorly it gets demoted to the next league down.

the chess drama thing with cheating and so on is all a theater, no? so many people reacting to what everyone else says, navara talking about kramnik in a blog post, kramnik talking about him and DIRECTLY TO him in a video, then again in another video, aronian to kramnik, then kramnik writes his own open letter in response. everyone talking past each other, these guys are either retards or they can't read. they should just have a fucking conversation, and livestream it too it would get lots of views and be very interesting. this is getting as bad as when he went after naroditsky

there's a common narrative that the indian prodigies aren't very competitive in fast chess, so beating magnus in rapid is newsworthy. also gukesh beat magnus in classical like a week or two ago, and maggy punched the table lol

it was the same for me to avoid some of the more annoying lines I switched to playing 2nf3 followed by 3d4 almost no matter what (unless ofc they hit you with some weird gambit of their own like elephant latvian buschgass which aren't common nor that hard to learn a good line against)and I'm quite happy with it

I have refrained myself from having any heavy handed involvement in the team ever since I first created it. Even when there was the initial cheatmixer drama, I was very reluctant to ban him in order to not create the wrong precedent.
Recently I got really fed up with all his nonsense and alts, the team is pretty much the same and everyone with at least a 2 weeks old account can join without any issues. The only exception is that it will have a zero tolerance policy to anything catmixer related.
There is no begging going on nor do I intend to involve myself in any other type of janitorial duties other than this one

Gukesh is the classical world champion. He destroyed everyone in Rapid too. But speed chess is not his thing, he probably doesn't focus on it as much as longer time controls.

He lets the little kiddies play with blitz monkey chess, while king Gukesh dominates in real classical chess.

>Classical: calculation based, mechanistic, drone like, for stupid people
>Blitz: creativity, art, Mozart of chess, for real people

Of course that's bullshit. When you're older you have more exposure to patterns and their outcomes so you can choose instantly and your diminishing stamina and memory that can check long lines don't affect your play.
As he grows older and starts losing more he'll get saltier but I don't think he will descend to Kramnik levels

I'm not sure, I found this link on google. https://lichess.org/tournament/drJWFG4w when we were in tier 9.
We crushed it in that tournament and made it to tier 8 briefly https://lichess.org/tournament/WgMNkcyc
but then kept falling back to the 9-11 range. We gave up in early August https://lichess.org/tournament/VdFx1ILt

chest, czerka, getz, and lycan all played in the last team battle so there's a decent chance they might show up eventually

Every worldchamp played blitz and I mean a lot, Fischer, Kasparov, Karpov, Petrosian, Kramnik, Vishy, Magnus... all of them are/were really good at blitz, it's about intuition and it seems Gukesh doesn't have any yet, although he's still young and can develop it but is he willing to? It makes sense given the cultural context. The fianchetto is stronger when you can't move your pawns two squares and the double pawn move is an European invention, so Indians were playing chess/chaturanga with rules that favour fianchettos for a long time.

I got to 900 in 2023 but since then I stopped playing and now I'm trying to learn by playing bots but it's not working. My anxiety has gotten worst so I only have been playing against bots until today when I finally started jumping back into real games and I've been getting crushed, making mistakes I never would against a bot with more time to think. I fucking hate myself and feel subhuman about all this, since I should just be looking for fucking work anyway

It seems you can train puzzle calculation in such a way that you're able to know by instinct whether there is a complication to the tactic you saw on first glance. Like when I play easy puzzles in the first ~20 worth of puzzle storm, I know that I'm just supposed to play the tactic and don't worry about the resulting position. I guess there's a level where you can do that fairly reliably up to at least 2000 puzzle rating.

Yeah that's not a good idea. The difference is that when a human plays badly, he's still probably playing according to some plan or trying to set up tactics. Then it's up to you to find the refutation. When bots play badly, they just play nonsense moves. The closest you'll get to human-like bots are the maia bots on lichess, but even then it's better to play real players.

Not trying to sound like a cringelord but chess isn't something you can jump in and out of. If you want to get good, you have to study hard and treat it as a type of second job. That means you have to dedicate a certain amount of time out of your day everyday to doing tactics, endgame studies, etc.

after rook a7 h1=Q rh7 there is no way to avoid trading the queen for the rook, even if he doesn't promote you still play rh7 and then sack it for the pawn, you need the king on h8 instead of g8 so he can't move the bishop with check and give the queen squares to escape too

another thing is that there is a rewarding component to playing out 5 moves you calculated once at the beginning, instead of 5 times, so you avoid reviewing the position for changes (even the ones that seem insignificant).

Blitz aside, Gukesh decisively proved in this tournament that he is the strongest rapid player in the world. People doubted and called him a fluke after he won the WCC, but in every tournament after the WCC he has proven himself by finishing in the top half or better.
It's clear Gukesh is here to stay. Every "but" about him the old guard had is getting disproven in real time. In classical, he has a winning or equal head-to-head with all of the old guard. He is a mental monster who comes back from two losses in a row in Norway Chess and beats everyone. And now he has the intuition to sweep a field of the world's best rapid players. Gukesh's detractors started with "he was lucky to win the Candidates and face a weak Ding". Now their arguments have been reduced to blitz, which will come with time, and freestyle, lol, as their cope.
Gukesh's favorite player is the great Bobby Fischer. In 1972, people said, "It is hard to talk about Fischer. Since the time that he has been playing, miracles have begun." Today, Gukesh's opponents say that they don't understand his style of chess. They better understand it soon for their own sake, or in a year or two Gukesh will remind the world what a real chess genius looks like.

numerous other top gms think hes cheating though and hes terrible in faster time formats (very common sign of cheaters)
theres also his performance at chennai olympiad which is known to have been full of cheaters

The crux of nepo's accusation was that he had insanely low average centipawn loss in the second half of the candidates IIRC it was 7cpl over seven games against the best in the in the world and he was never worse not even for one move
Grischuk argued it was impossible to be that good at classical and that bad at blitz without something fishy going on
Then of course there is the deserved "racism" against indians, they are a nation of scammers who think cheating is a sign of intelligence and they are notorious for cheating at online chess at every level
It's worth noting that india is heavily investing in chess while no other country besides maybe uzbekistan gives a shit, so it's not inconceivable that they would help their top players cheat, it's not that easy to cheat at top level otb tournaments and you would need outside help to do it, although the risk/reward in terms of national reputation is dubious imo

not when people behind the scenes are working to prevent any mention of it. with all the cheating accusations being thrown around (in the professional scene not here) why is no one mentioning indians? why does fide go out of their way to pander to them on social media constantly? why does che$$com have tania on every fucking broadcast?
try finding info about cheating at that chennai olympiad now too - it wasnt even indians being the known cheaters (armenia) but it happened in india and casts suspicion on the event so poof all discussion disappears

That imo is a very good point desu. I understand blitz not being your thing, but he should be at least competitive.
But the guy is playing like an IM, I really don't understand how is that even possible.
He has the opening theory, he more than likely already has a good idea of the plans, he knows his endgames, he should have all he needs to at least put up good fights. But look at that game against Wesley So, he's playing at least 400 points lower than his classical strength. If I would have to play an indian online who is 400 points lower rated in blitz, I would just abort and think he's cheating

None of the young talent shows any indication of playing exclusively in open events or the skill to be completely dominant in women's events so it's anybody's guess.

Puzzles are overrated unless you study them. Just blitzing out puzzles doesn't tell you how to reach good positions that tactics flow from easily. Like I can solve puzzles way above my level because the board is set up that way. Whereas on my own I'm just clumsily fucking around move by move and leave myself with way fewer tactics.

There's no way a signal at important points would be enough to let him crush magnus in rapid if he wasn't legitimately super strong. I'm not sure, but I'd guess at least 2750 would be required.
If the signal gives a little detail (say 2 to 4 bits of information) then it would push the required rating down a lot, maybe below 2700

We only need top three which should be pretty much guaranteed. But imo we will most likely take first, one strong player isn't enough to win (especially since we will probably be able to break his streak)

Thatโ€™s a good question. I cannot truly love her as I donโ€™t know her personally. But also I believe you can tell a lot from a personโ€™s eyes even in pictures and she seems to me to have a lot of insight and understanding beyond chess. But from what I can glean from her chess, I can definitely tell she has a strong will, one only needs to look at her Olympiad games to tell that.

All of this I find attractive. But most importantly, Iโ€™m still trying to figure out how she can have such a petite and borderline frail upper body yet still be packing so much heat downstairs.

She handmakes them. She is into art, fashion, and design, as well as music, singing, and chess. She is a pure natural all-round talent from the days of Morphy before the autists took over everything.

My only problem with her currently is she has literally not played a man in 2025, only womenโ€™s tournaments. Sheโ€™s good enough to play Opens and she only needs 70 Elo to gain IM.

Itโ€™s not really sexism, it just seems like she has genuine other interests. Itโ€™s tough to compete when youโ€™re not an autist that has been whip-beaten to learn chess since 4 years old. And thatโ€™s why I root for her, because sheโ€™s a natural talent without having to do all that intense study.

And not to mention she has the best natural most well-rounded ass this side of the Ural Mountains.

I had the same thought as you but it was a team event and they were the last boards playing, and a draw for Alua would be an L for her team but a win wouldโ€™ve been an overall round win for her team. She had no other choice. You have to at least try in that scenario.

Those are Rapid ratings she is 2336 Classical at the moment. Like I said she needs to play an Open tournament against stable rated men to gain rating. Year to date she has mainly played similarly underrated Kazakh/Central Asian girls, which are not easy pickings to say the least. She has been slacking this year, I assume she has been busy being hot, but she is easily a 2400 strength lifetime player. Itโ€™s not even a question. Let her finish college first.

Bots. Before I deleted my account I'd get random ass bot accounts with weird names. Usually like random nonwords and numbers. Shit no human uses as a username. They tend to show up during win streaks, will never speak, etc. And no matter what you do you will never beat these bots. It can be like 900 rated and effortlessly stomp you leaving you wondering what the hell just happened. Just playing unrated as a guest on other sites works better to avoid cheating and bots. I think chesscom does it to frustrate you and try to incentivize you to buy the premium and shit.

Dominant error looks like any of a handful of attempts to try to secure control of the back rank to deliver mate with Qg8. Maybe blindspot about c4 so instead go with idea of e5 etc. Other ideas that sort of look like they probably work without doing any detailed calculation are the main reason some easy puzzles have high ratings. For the opposite issue, some fairly hard puzzles with low ratings wind up that way because the resulting position is not clearly winning. You think 'well there's obviously this sack and discovered check to win exchange, however that looks like even material and messy so it can't be that..." people go looking for other more complicated ideas that don't work for reasons that punch a ways above the current rating of the puzzle.

Daniel was caught red handed using engine as a lazy crutch to assist him in creation of "educational" streams. He then lashed out in a variety of ways entirely iut of proportion with the accusation. He could have admitted he did it, apologized, put up the one fair play requested, and that would have been the end of it. Instead his behaviour came off to me as though he had a lot more to hide, that he felt like the walls were closing in causing him to panic. any good books on beating the French Defense? I hate faggots who spam that shit, I never have fun when people play 1...e6. I hate it so much I always go for the exchange variation because i'd rather accept that dead draw than randomly be on the back foot after black completely seizes the initiative and puts enormous pressure on my center in what's supposed to be a "defensive, solid" opening.
i neglected opening theory for too long because my coach despises opening theory and trained me incorrectly, i guess i'll have to bite that bullet now

Yeah it's very easy, I just found it a bit fun and aestheticall pleasing.

Why praise chesstempo? Its puzzles tend to be high quality and I think many people do find the comment section useful or at least interesting.
Sure, I won't read the comments on every problem, but when I see some particularly interesting line or I don't understand an idea in the puzzle, there's usually someone pointing it out (along with other sidelines I might have missed), and the discussion can be interesting and illuminating

A funny chesstempo problem https://chesstempo.com/chess-tactics/152616
It's notable because its standard rating is 950 and its blitz rating is around 2075. Even factoring in the fact that blitz mode has a time limit, that's an insane gap. And the time taken per solve is similar between the time controls in this case.

And the 2000 rated blitz players getting it wrong are *way* stronger than the 1000 rated standard players who don't overcomplicate it and calculate mating lines which don't work (and would be totally incapable of realistically attempting such calculations)

Your post-game analysis is just going over your game a second time but with the benefit of hindsight.
Analysis didn't make a whole lot of sense to me either until I started taking notes.
If you aren't spitting out opening theory or making obvious captures/recaptures, make a note of what you are thinking. If you see an unusual move from your opponent, write it down. If you have multiple candidate moves, write down the pros/cons of the candidates and why you decided on the move you played. If the game starts to shift your way or to the opponent, make a note of at what move you began to feel this way. If you hung a piece, write it down. If your opponent found a defense to a tactic you set up, write it down.
What does this move do?
What did I miss?
Where is the threat?
Why did my position feel uncomfortable?
And so on.

Don't worry about getting everything right. The goal is to get you thinking about the things you are learning from books, coaches, and/or engines. Your analysis will evolve along with your chess play and knowledge.

Well that was a less than spectacular showing by Oberschlumpf, he drew one game and skedaddled to go eat some tofu
Perhaps it should be unsurprising that the vegan team declined to participate in a slaughter

Actual games going on over in Liga 17A https://lichess.org/tournament/ncZNmVeo
We should be able to get some games for Liga 16, but top 3 will still be very easy imo

it depends how you look at it yes their top players are better than ours by a lot they even have some im and gm posting but for every titled player they have thousands of 3digit tards and for every 3 digit tard they now have one or two indiands that don't even play chess at all, the average rating of /chess/ is way way waaaay higher than the average rating of r/chess
