Medieval guy here, I tried to play with ranged and it seems to be working so far. Bows do jack shit against armor but by drawing aggro around the walls I'm able to pick off low armors and gang up on heavy armors.
I just think combat animals are bugged. Managed get the same pike the soldiers have been twoshotting me with but animals have a billion armor points and you have to get through most of it to actually damage them. I looked into their health tab and the boars had like 45 arrow bruises and lost maybe 5% hp and 50% armor durability. This isn't normal.
A pawn with a pike and one with a long hammer both beating the shit out of one boar and it took unironically 7 in-game hours. My direwolf pet lost both eyes tanking that dude.

I had a colonist give birth to triplets and now she's constantly at/near zero on food, sleep, and recreation due to constantly feeding her babies. For what reason? Are you saying so that it maximizes explorable land vs empty water? I don't think it will matter. The exploration landmark system likely just generates randomly over time like quest locations. Random event of "new landmark discovered!" that you fly to. So a planet with a lot of water will have a high density of landmarks, while a planet fully covered in land will have a low density of landmarks, but they will still have the same amount generated at once.

i have encountered the bug where a pawn would take forever cleaning a spot, not moving until a starvation warning hits, similar to that anon a while back. if i undraft them, another pawn would take their place trying to clean the animal filth.

i tried fixing it by dev tool destroying the filth tile and adjacent tiles, but soon another nearby tile would trigger the same bug.

then i used waterskip to drench the area and removed roofs (i temporarily roofed my grazing area due to toxic fallout). eventually it went away on its own.

i am using the common sense mod, among others.

That's the mod name, yes. The problem is the hulk/standard/fat body gene in the neanderthal xenotype, Rabbie clothes only support thin bodies. The problem stems from the mod not restricting the race into the baseliner xenotype. They already fixed this in a recent update by simply completely disabling genes on them. Rabbie is unfortunately abandonware.
You can fix it right now by changing the body type in the NL Facial Animation setting, click that face button on the bottom bar. You can also remove the body gene or apply the baseliner xenotype on them in devmode.

looking more closely, the narrow tunnels are only near where the rooms are. that's not the worst. if you move some shelves around to make sure there's 2 width everywhere inside the big room, it should be pretty comfy. there's a poker table that i'm guessing they like to play, but you have to squeeze through some shelves first, so i bet it can get pretty congested at rec time.
and the meals are pretty far from the tables, so i'd set a shelf with meals somewhere closer.

When you start a game tutorial and pick the default ideology (which basically gives every faction the same ideology)
