Those are made specifically for upgrading gear.

Depends on the gear, just look at the stats.
Some gear gives purely defensive bonuses - you generally don't need to level this on specials at all.
Some gear gives purely offensive bonuses, you generally don't need to level this on buffers or healers and arguably tanks - but there is some benefit to this, Koharu can do a lot of damage in early game missions WHILE healing your tank up since her heal is an AOE heal + damage dealing grenade etc.

Rule of thumb is if you have a dps striker just level everything up and make sure your tanks are getting at least their HP gear upgraded, healers will want their healing item upgraded etc.
Don't worry too much about "wasting" gear upgrades though, ANY upgrade you do at lvl 20 isn't even going to move the bar at 50 let alone 90. You're fretting over (insert smallest currency in your country here). It's better to spend "bad" upgrades if it helps you clear the early content than to sit on them and find out you've saved 0.8% of a single levels worth of xp later on.

Gear is VERY impactful. One of the reasons it's advised to push main missions is to unlock the higher tiers asap.

Yes, you'll quickly realize that levelling up skill starts to escalate in cost which you won't be able to keep up with so it's unrealistic to skill up all students. General advice would be to invest in the students you like the most and the ones who are good for the upcoming content.

Grey and Blue books generally aren't that hard to get, don't waste gold and purple ones unless you're sure.
Some skills are also far less value, but it's not usually hard to figure out. Iori has an accuracy passive - accuracy is basicly a pvp stat, so no need to level that. Himari has damage dealing abilities, which aren't useless, but she's never going to deal amazing damage so slacking on those is fine etc.

That tiny sliver of a green bar on the right is how much the 40 grey reports it takes to level a student from 1-19 gets you.
Stop fretting over it. It's very hard to fuck yourself spending anything (bar eligma) in the early game because the scaling requirements make anything you spend a drop in the ocean, so easy to "recover" from a bad choice. More players will shoot themself in the foot at that level by trying to get by with garbage and failing than shoot themselves via over investment. You barely have anything TO invest.

Don't spend ligma.
The "face shards" are elephs, essentially character dupes that you can earn without rolling dupes and use to max out the characters as if you got a dupe. It's how you take a character from 1/2/3* to 5* and get their unique weapon.
Eligma is a joker currency that can be used for any character, hence why you shouldn't be spending it until you know what you're doing

If you put 200 rolls into a banner you can redeem one of the rate up characters, it's the games guarantee system.
It's generally advised not to roll on a banner unless you can afford the 200 rolls to spark, since they do NOT carry over between banners, but they also don't get wiped if you get lucky - so if you plan on sparking Rio's banner and get Rio on the 190th pull, if you put 10 more rolls in you still get your spark, so you can redeem either a Rio dupe OR you can spend it on one of the other rate up students, like jkNeru.
It's an incredibly good system, my favorite rendition of one in a gacha, but you really don't want to be throwing 40 pulls here and 40 pulls there etc, it's much better to just plan to roll to 200 on banners and skip ones you can't afford that on. Upcoming returning blufes character that's sparkable is sHanako, who is easily the most brokenass dps in the game if you want her.
My friend got 5 sHoshino's and a Mika, none of who were rated up on his first blufes, as well as a sHanako and sparked a Wakamo on his first blufes as well as a haul of random non-blufes students.

She's a healer that's a striker. A lot of the best buffers in the game are specials, of which you have two slots - the other early game healers you get like Serina are good but hog a special slot.

Kokona, Koharu and iMari are the 3 notable striker healers. Koharu has AOE heals but that's it, Kokona and iMari both have the ability to reduce the cost of your teams EX's and very strong ST heals.

You get the unit from the very first mission on the event iirc.
Even if you didn't, I'd still advise doing it - you can re-read the events whenever you want so you're not robbing yourself of the ability to read them later.
You could close your eyes and skip through the event if the student was at the end and then just go back and read it for free whenver you want, though I think the welfare students are from the first thing.
I would HIGHLY advise getting the welfare students and I'm someone that thinks the story is great, so I'm definitely not advocating skipping that, but the welfare students make getting through the game so much easier for new players.
