I mean that regardless of the morality, playing the "Right way" is the one that gets you a decent ending. and let's be honest, the neutral ending is a pretty bad ending to Undertale.
No game developer wants players to have a bad experience. That's why it was a good measure to have flowey point you to how to get the better ending, and have characters like Ralsei, and Seam guide you to presumably the better outcomes.
It doesn't have to be about morality, but just playing the way the game is guiding you to, even if it's harder. You're going to have an easier time if you grind enemies to get higher LV. but that's how you don't free the underground.
You don't want the player to finish a game and go "well that was underwhelming. on to the next game". If they get the bad ending, or even a less than perfect ending, you want them thinking "Okay, I know what went wrong. Let's do it again, but better."

Omega Flowey is fucking peak though, its the best boss Toby has ever made in terms of presentation. The choice of killing him or sparing him is the culmination of the entire game, and the ending is bittersweet.

Frankly I think True Pacifist is too sentimental and long, and I think Genocide is just a bad ending by design, its meant to be unsatisfying. Neutral wins baby.

I think that's actually a good thesis of my whole point.
I didn't leave satisfied on my first Undertale playthrough until I looked up how to get a better ending.
The only hints on how to get said ending needed Flowey to be spared, which I just didn't feel the need to do.
It's why I'm saying that there should be a bad ending, but with ample hints to finding a better one. The player should be motivated to try again after getting an unsatisfying ending, not confused or dismissive.
Deltarune doesn't really have an ending right now, which is kind of an issue, but it's being released in chapters. What'cha gonna do?

What you're describing is the central meta-conflict of Undertale. When you beat the game for the first time, you'll get a "neutral" ending and it's expected that you'll feel unsatisfied with it somehow, like you could have done better or done something different. Whether by your own volition or because Flowey tempted you, you'll start again and try to get a "better ending," until you eventually figure out what's best for everyone and achieve True Pacifist.
Maybe you're satisfied and stop playing there. But if you aren't, you'll boot up the game again, and find that the game is ready for you with a question. Are you really satisfied with the "best ending" when you know that the game isn't over and there's more to see and do? Are you really willing to undo all the work you've done just to see what happens if you do something different?
It's not a test, it's just a question. There's no right or wrong answer, it's just asking you to think about what you choose to do. No matter what happens, it's your choice.

What you're describing is exactly my point. The game under normal circumstances pushes you to see all it has to offer.
My issue is with how it guides you toward getting the pacifist ending. Even in most neutral ones, Sans isn't upset if you kill a few mooks along the way. (unless one of them is his brother.)
It's the fact that you only get some direction on how to get a better ending only if you spare the most evil being out there.
It's how easy it is for the player to miss this crucial bit of information that's the issue. Not the moral question involved with it.
A disinterested player just quits before getting to the real good stuff. That's why you need to keep them strung along on a carefully woven story, even if it's wholly one they make for themselves.
Like I said, if a player is confused about what they should have done, then that's a bad sign.

undertale's whole thing is about the relationship between the player and the game. everything about it makes sense through this lens.

Chara is, in essence, a representation of completionism for its own sake, stripping everything away from the game because you can't let it go.

the true lab and monsters not being able to handle determination is very very clearly referencing how monsters literally can't handle the way we interact with the game mechanics that build their world. hell, one tries to manifest as a save point. undyne melts when she tries to go against what we want too much, when she tries to eclipse our determination and fails. it's eldritch horror, to them. flowey, not having a monster soul, disconnected from his passion (you know, the way we disconnect and stop humanizing characters over repeat playthroughs) is also the only one disconnected enough from the world to be able to treat it like we do.

you can read literally every aspect of the game like this. the way characters treat each other and you as if it's reality, getting reasonably pissed off when you kill their friends and family.

fucking echo flowers can play into this if you stare at them long enough. they're a desperate implication that there is more going on than we can see. interacting with them shows us events that, physically, did not happen.

every single thing in the game makes sense with this reading.

i spared Flowey because I was under the impression that it was important to Spare enemies as a main game mechanic, and was rewarded with a hint. After completing Pacifist, and thinking "hey, I never met Shyren and had that interaction" i considered reseting the game and replaying it "perfectly" and when Flowey asked me to just let the characters live their lives, I felt the correct move was to move on and not reset. that's part of the game to me: living with my 2 Undertale clears.

The thing we fight in the actual Sword Route game is literally the Shadow Mantle being controlled by the voice talking to Kris. The sprite is just the mantle itself, the "ears" are the high collar on the cape.

It summons FRIENDs and the Shadow Mantle was in Seam's possession before someone took it. Both of which can tie back to The Knight/Dess.
There's text suggesting Seam may have belonged to Dess before. Asriel has a drawing of him, and Dess has "frayed yarn and buttons" in her room. FRIEND may in fact be styled after Seam. A form it took either to appeal to Dess or from her own subconcious desire to have something comforting in the Dark.

The voice in the Sword Route games acts very familiar with Kris. It is personal and implies it knows what Kris really is like. And when the fight ends, it specifically says "we BOTH have work to do!"
If it's just FRIEND or some new character, what is that work? If it's the Knight, the answer is obvious: the fake fight that's about to happen.
I haven't heard anything that could outright stop it from being the Knight. Everything about the situation can be explained as Dess/The Knight fucking with Kris then giving them a handicap for their next fight when they prove they still have passion for violent games. A handicap that makes you more likely to get to the point of the fight where the Shadow Crystal can be gotten, at which point the fight immediately ends.
