Look at Elites in general from CE to 2. They go from aggressive pursuit and fast strafing to retreating to cover and trying to sneak around you - only being directly aggressive if you get close or unshield them.

So, I've been playing Halo for years and decided to play FPS games that came before it on PC and N64, during it on PC, GameCube, and Wii, played Doom 2016 on Switch and Steam Deck along with some modern boomer shooters and a lot of people here isn't going to like what I say. I kind of don't like Halo anymore. I kind of like Infinite's campaign because it has some elements from those past shooters but I feel with UE, Halo Studios and the third party should take a lot from classic FPS games while keeping it Halo to make it good and unique. Halo's on Microsoft's hit list and keeping it the way it currently is would lead to it getting the Perfect Dark treatment. I don't think Halo 1-5's gameplays can survive in the modern era of FPS. There needs to be changes which will be hard to accept.

A lot of people categorize the quality of something based on their experiences with it. And sure that makes sense, what else do you have to go on? But it can be tricky. Case in point, I've played hundreds of hours in both Infinite and 5. I can say pretty reliably that Infiiite is a better Halo game in a vacuum, but I have so many more fond memories of 5 because the community was still so much more alive at the time. It was so much easier to find matches with no problem or hop into a fun custom game night. At the end of the day our experiences dictate our enjoyment.

But I think I get it now. It's just that during most of the game's showcase/trailers, they didn't go over this, it just looked like normal DOOM gameplay with some new weapons/abilities, they should have done more to show how much they changed the formula.

Just found out that Halo Studios isn't finished with its 2023 downsizing. Microsoft is doing what they did to Turn 10 on Halo Studios. The entire Halo Infinite team is about to be fully axe. Halo Studios will be a team leading development of all future Halo games but those games whether they're remakes, mainline games, spin-offs, the mp-only game will be developed by third party developing studios here in the US and in the EU. This is how Halo Studios is working on multiple projects. Halo Studios will never develop a Halo game themselves again. Seems like Halo was one of the games chosen to stay like Gears, Forza Horizon, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Call of Duty, some Kings games, and Blizzard's games along with Minecraft. Halo Infinite is most likely going to be having a winding down.

Removing sprint from H4 after launch would've hurt the game because all the maps were built around it. Halo 4 not having any good 4v4 maps was the major issue. Killstreaks needed to be removed because they undermined the on-map weapons. Loadouts were fine to remove but post-patch loadouts were relatively balanced anyway.
The goal for the flagnum was probably to give more individual power and encourage players to play the objective more but they gave the carrier a weaker weapon. Felt like a compromise between two visions.
343 made Assault and Infection much more rigid so less freedom for custom modes.
Oddball throwing was cool and that eventually led to Ricochet.
Halo 4 is a mess.

The maps actually (mostly) play fine if you take the time to set up a regular game mode. I actually think they are better designed than Reach's.

Add on 4 and 5's creative missteps, a severe lack of content at launch for 5 and Inf, and you get a wildfire.
Like if I gave this franchise to normies that don't have an attachment to nostalgia and they don't reject it altogether for Fortnite or CoD, I can imagine they wouldn't hate 343's games like we do because they don't have the context of how badly handled these games were.
reach is such an ugly game. it exists as this weird transitionary product between classic halo and modern shooters where they have sprint, but it's an equipment loadout you have to choose and it's very limited so it just feels jank and awkward. jetpacks fucking suck. the bloom is overbearing. it's got this ugly tacticool aesthetic. it's just an ugly gremlin. the campaign story is pretty good, I'll give it that, but everything else about the game is awful.
