>>530524469>does anyone remember the first time they got better at them and what the process was like?It's a long process and you'll learn the quickest and the relatively least painlessly if you do a mixture of matchmaking (play ranked if you want to fight other newbies; note that any players who have gotten to Master rank have all their characters auto-advanced to rank S+, so S rank and below is pretty much smurf free) and more importantly lobby matches with people you're in communication with. I don't have a specific recommendation but beginner Discord servers that run beginner tournaments can also help.
One nice thing about GBVSR is it has one-button specials so you don't have to remember or practice motion inputs if you don't want to. Simple bread-and-butter combos are very, very easy in this game, with the stronger saucy stuff not being required when you're learning. The most important things for a beginner in a fighting game to learn:
>learn your pokesYour character will have certain buttons you want to press at certain ranges. Being able to poke your opponent can win you matches on its own if they're as new as you. You can special cancel your pokes and most characters have a simple poke>special cancel that combos on hit for a knockdown and is safe or plus on block (plus means if the two of you press a button at the same time yours comes out first)
>anti-air2H is a universal anti-air in this game and a lot of characters also have specials designed to anti-air. 2H and some specials are air-unblockable, meaning you can always punish a jump if you react.
>frametrapA frametrap is when you do a sequence of moves that leaves a gap too small for the opponent to press anything without getting hit. If your opponent is mashing, frametraps will take care of them. Dash light (66L) is +2 on every character and close light is +4, so even without specials you can frametrap. Some characters have close heavies fast enough that c.L into c.H is a high-damage frametrap.

If PvP seems like a hurdle to you, you still have a singleplayer story mode that's fairly fun for what it is. But yeah, the content is limited. You might want to try Granblue Relink for a more suitable experience if that's the case.

>strike/throw/shimmyGBVSR doesn't have a lot of high/low mix and the block button gives players a way to always block left/right mix, so the main way to open up a turtling opponent is to perform the mixup of strike, throw and shimmy.
If the opponent is going to press a button, jump etc. then pressing your own button will beat them; they have to block it. If the opponent blocks everything, you can throw them, though they can tech it. There's a very easy and common option select (OS) where a player inputs a throw tech on a delay to block strikes and tech throws, so the third option is very important: walking out of the opponent's throw range is called a shimmy, and it will make them whiff a throw when they delay tech. When this happens you can hit them with a big button and do HUGE damage (if you know your combos). Some characters also have special moves that go over throws, such as Narmaya's flip, Beelzebub's divekick and more, and those can be used for the same result as a shimmy. Frametraps and strike/throw/shimmy will be how you open up your opponent on offense the majority of the time.
Don't get discouraged by losing, even as you get better. There will always be a bigger fish out there, and the journey is the important part. This community is largely very friendly, even here at /gbvsg/, and people are usually quick to answer any questions you have.
Lastly I just want to link a video I think is phenomenal at teaching fighting game fundamentals. It goes over everything I talked about and more, and it's very game-agnostic, talking about the concepts broadly.
