I liked it in the end but I had to try really hard to suspend my disbelief for a lot of it.

I say this as a day 1 player who loves the game to death, to all newfags: if you're not enjoying the story to the point it feels like a slog to even read it, and if you're not feeling attached to the characters, then this may not be the game for you. There's very little in the way of gameplay, it's a glorified VN that focuses on lighthearted narratives with rare moments of seriousness. If that's not your jam, then don't force yourself to keep playing. The ending of a story only has impact if you enjoy the beginning.

But BA kinda flies into the face of both of those many many times. It's bombastic, loud, and explicit in what it values, and what it values is stuff that's idealistic / feel-good.

Think back to Hifumi's speech as an example, an uncharitable view of the speech might say that it's stupid power of friendship anime bullshit instead of the usual Conflict Theory story that unravels a realistic, relatable tragedy, follows it to its logical conclusion, and extracts a thematic message from that instead.
An uncharitable view of hifumi's speech basically says it's Saturday morning cartoon writing.

That is, unless, if you're willing to suspend your disbelief more than most people would, and extract your own value from that instead.
This is just my own ramblings based on criticisms I've seen hurled against BA over the years from people calling its writing shit that wouldn't pass even entry level VN standards. I dunno just something to mull over

No, she's pretty niche. She is definitely a good unit and you should get her but she's not some sort of must have that you need to jump for or you'll brick. There's definitely alternatives whenever she's used too but she's for sure better than Asuna who is a one raid wonder and only useful in Geburah. Considering that we've only had like one main story update between Hoshino arc end and current JP, it's not really that out there that it does feel like they're lost on what to do or where to take the main story. Two if you count the Deca stuff and Millenium/Rio shilling.

Maybe the fes stream in a few days will make me believe they still got it by showing off more new characters instead of dumb alts or some much needed main story quest updates but right now I don't think this is it at all. I just finished the ASS club event, and it's my favorite now, it was... Sweet. It didn't lean a lot on comedy like the rest (hate Cherino), and it actually made me feel a little for the characters. I had read a few of Yoshimi, Natsu and Airi's momotalks before, so I already liked them a lot, but after this they're my second favorite club, behind PS68.
I love Natsu, she's unpredictable and her aloof personality continues to charm me. And that short skirt and soft thighs.. ahem. This was Kazusa's event, so it's no surprise that I fell for her, her design was my favorite before I started playing and I'm glad she's a great character, I hope I roll her soon. I'd argue the cost is even more important at lower levels - you're often wanting to cycle fast to get to the 1-2 good dps units ex's.
When I was new there were plenty of times where my dps weren't stellar for a map and cyclinc to the ones that were while trying to keep a tank up were what got me through a hard map.

I also think repositioning is massively undervalued - if you're pushing beyond your level (especially in any content where there's a boss mob / student that actually does an attack where baiting matters), getting your tank to actually tank is valuable when your backline is too weak to take the odd hit.
Chinatsu clogging up your EX rotation for a slightly larder heal just never felt worth it.
