I played PoE1 before it even appeared on steam(pre-support gems) and I truly believe that the game was never THAT good and only kicked off because D3 was, somehow, EVEN worse.
The underlying problem is same as in D2 - lack of reasons to fight for. For example Total War gives you diplomacy. Its shit and seems to be worthless since you'll declare war on everyone anyway BUT it motivates you and gives you reasons to keep on fighting battles.
PoE2 is better on all fronts but mostly because Witch is sexo and I'm a coomer.

The largest reason anyone plays SSF is not for the challenge, it's so they can avoid envy of better players.

There's a cluster mod 10% increased minion movement speed for each herald affecting you. You can get a ton of heralds with elementalist. You could reasonably hit 170% minion movement speed (with additional passives). This is totally unviable but hyperspeed minions sounds fun

I fumbled my way into a legitimate T17-viable elemental hit of the spectrum build in settlers with fucking quill rain as a weapon. It's honestly as simple as "wear lightning coil".

I was using Grace with Eternal Blessing, had 100% spell suppression, and immunity to stun, elemental ailments, hinder, maim, corrupted blood, all curses, and reflected damage. My recovery was almost entirely on-hit effects because lol quill rain, so no leech and no recovery maps weren't an issue. The ONLY thing that completely fucked me was "enemies have %chance to avoid elemental ailments".

Now, I could only do like 2m dps on a good day, and that required everything's ailment threshold to be low enough to shock. So ultra juiced shit was out of the question. But it's actually staggering the amount of bullshit i was just flat out immune to.
