Not going along with meme whatever, it just felt odd to me that she’s been trapped for 40 years in a goddamn time loop and the only time she ever had a chance and someone that is a peer that can also recall routes, she’s an annoying tsundere about it. And the stupid servant thing too. She killed an entire timeline to hear him say he loves her. She certainly didn’t act like it in the one route they get to spend the entire time together!

Her only being able to be honest when there’s no hope is actually a negative for me, I dislike that. I would think someone seeing a one in a million chance would appreciate it. That doesn’t mean she has to be submissive to Takumi either, but just more like Sigma and Phi of being equals dealing with a situation.

In the past I saw someone compare her to Senjogahara, and I don’t think that’s accurate. Because for the readers and protagonist we get to see from the first book that she truly loves the protagonist. And even though she goes on to not show it, we at least get to know how she feels because she was open about it at the start so no matter how abusive she is afterwards we at least get to rest easy knowing she’s truly in love with the protagonist. Hiruko didn’t do that. She didn’t let Takumi in on that, which is weird it’s like her and Takumi pretend the goodbye kiss didn’t happen in the route >:(. If she’d done that at the beginning of SF and been honest with her romantic feelings I really would’ve been fine with how she acted throughout the whole thing.

Okay that is an approach I hadn’t considered. And might be better, I went for the Takumi reaching downwards approach as shitty as that sounds but during lunch or something spending time with his normie friends/Karua and he goes out of the classroom for something and he notices Darumi alone playing something on probably some old handheld and ends up striking up a conversation being curious about it. But also it being a sort of rare occurrence and Hiruko has like student council duties sometimes so Darumi is alone occasionally if she can’t harass Hiruko and Takumi ends up spending time with her in those opportunities. Then they could lead to hang outs with the 3 of them sometimes but then Darumi feeling guilty towards Hiruko since she’s been pretty open about flirting/being interested in her prior to spending time with Takumi.

outside of retsnom and that one scene in comedy, Darumi primarily seems to prefer woman, so I wonder if her hanging with Takumi makes her question her sexuality. Even the eroge we give to her in the giftomtic has 2 girls on it iirc, so did she even play any stuff that's boy love, or maybe her preference for women was shaped from her traumatic experiences from her part time job.

I wonder if growing up, she assumed she was bi or bi with girl preference from playing her VNs (assuming we take Kodaka's weibo response about her only being into 2d characters seriously prior to the game's events), but later decided she was exclusively into women from her traumatic work experience, but then Takumi makes her question herself again, and helps her open up more. I'm assuming that is a normal highschool AU where everyone relatively have the same backstories and established relationships ingame.

Darumi and Takumi would run in completely different circles, but they would still be in the same class. I like to think of Takumi as the class rep, mainly responsible for everyone in his class, while Hiruko is part of the student council and responsible for the school as a whole. Darumi always busies herself with lusting over Hiruko (who isn't amused, but knows there's something else going on behind the scenes but she won't pry) or she's alone and Takumi's busy with his normie friends (Karua, idk how Nozomi would fit into this, maybe Eito).

Takumi wouldn't really care about Darumi since they're acquaintances at most, but for them to get involved with each other I'd want him to walk in on something he shouldn't have seen. Something to do with Darumi's part-time job or her hurting herself, which makes Takumi's savior complex act up and he'd feel the need to protect her since he is partly responsible for her as the class rep. I want what he saw to always linger in his mind and he feels like he has to do something about it and makes an attempt to get closer to Darumi, but he would likely need Hiruko's help. She wouldn't mind bridging the gap if it means Darumi can get some help from someone who cares and feels responsible for her wellbeing.

Personally I think she's bi with a girl preference, but it would take Takumi or any other guy that actually treats her like a person to make her realize that. She's comfortable with saying raunchy things to guys to freak them out, but I don't think she'd take herself seriously when saying those things and if a guy were to reciprocate, she would get freaked out.

Her line of work naturally puts her off from guys and it's easier and more comfortable to latch onto women. There's almost always guarenteed safety there compared to the nasty men she's been with.

While I wouldn’t want her to hurt herself, one instance I saw of Takumi reaching out was say in my instance of him initially approaching from seeing her play games by herself, they talk a few times after, and perhaps getting close to night walking home after getting busy with something he also sees her hanging out by herself and also strikes up a conversation. From that he picks up that she’s trying to avoid going home and ends up inviting her to his home, and if she doesn’t accept he still hangs out with her for awhile and walks her home himself. I feel like that sort of situation would be enough to linger in his mind about why she wouldn’t want to go home, and it may end up in nice situations with bringing her home for dinner and having fun.

I’m impressed how imaginative some people can be while still keeping the characters close to the same. Someone on here was nice enough to translate the text that was on top of the art and it goes like this:

Also might be an interpretation thing, since after doing Retsnom I came away feeling Darumi was a normal caring girl but has endured being deeply tortured and hurt. She still likes normal girly things and normie fun stories but acts otherwise to make people hate her and keep up her image. Haha true that.. I see things through a Darumi-lense because I'm also a girl, and a menhera, and I relate to a little too much of what she's said so it's easier for me to understand her mindset. It feels weird to me to paint her as a normal caring girl because I feel like it erases a lot of her. She's a lot of things at once and that's what makes her great.

I can see the facade she puts up as a default mood and it's hard to get out of, even around people she's comfortable with. Even if she promises to be herself around Takumi, which usually means being more subdued, that manic side is still a part of her. I can't see her letting her walls down unless she's under extreme distress, which was the entirety of Retsnom. She's emotionally intelligent but kind of retarded when it comes to anything else, so it's hard for me to see her adjust to a normal life when there's a lot wrong with her and she's fine with that. Even her emotional intelligence barely comes into play because of how.. superficial a lot of her relationships seem. It's her having mindless fun but never seeing the need to make a meaningful connection unless she sees someone going down the same road as her, someone she can relate to.

But that's just how I see things, from someone with the same relationship habits she seems to have (right down to lusting over girls I idolize and harassing guys because I don't think it's that serious)

I suppose you could chalk it up to the normal guy mindset like Takumi has that I mostly share. I was annoyed as hell by Darumi and was starting to hate her after KG but Retsnom made me fall in love with her. But I did also take her being honest and real with Takumi to mean that’s the real her and she’s just being an annoying shithead normally as an act and that’s not really her at all. At least it sounded that way when she said it was to make people hate her and he asked if it was an act and it was confirmed. Not actually a part of her, perhaps an exaggerated part of her. At least that’s how me normal guy and my other guy friend I roped into playing it also read into it but we very much more associate with the Takumi perspective than anything else.

One of the most interesting aspects of Retsnom to me though was that while it was the only route she reveals her true self to anyone, she wasn’t planning to either so it’d be extremely hard to get that out of her in an ordinary situation. The only reason she did reveal how she really is is due to Takumi finding her passed out on the floor and confronting her about it, otherwise she’d have continues to act the manic hyper girl until the end.

Yeahah, I thought the same! I'm the polar opposite because I loved her even before Retsnom because half the stuff she did or said was things that I've done or said before, so it was nice seeing a character just like me. Retsnom just made me love her even more because it gave me exactly what I expected from a character like her, someone like me.

She has morbid interests, loves talking aboutthat stuff and gets excited about them, but the alienation of herself only comes from her being super annoying about it. Hell, she could even act super normal and subdued but people who still get freaked out by her because of her interests, so I think she'd rather go all out and be proud about what she likes, since it would get her the same reaction anyway. The act Darumi puts on is an extension of herself, but then it makes me wonder if your personality is defined by how you act around other people or how you are when you're alone? It's weird, especially when it comes to Darumi because I can't imagine her as being only normal or weird, she's somewhere inbetween.

Seeing Darumi's true self resonated with me a lot. It made me so happy that she was able to open up to Takumi. He was able to accept her, hell, even love her, when all she did was make herself as unlikeable as possible. Even when she's like that, she's still capable of being loved.. Shot me right in the heart.

I love Darumi a lot. She's annoying on purpose and wants people to hate her, but she actually doesn't want to burden them. I think she wants her suffering to mean something. If people are going to treat her like shit, then why not go all out and give them a reason to? Give them an outlet and a stress reliever so she doesn't have to see them upset. And in Retsnom, she through all of that pain just for Takumi and everyone else because it would mean something. Everyone's happiness always matters more than her own in her eyes and aw.. It makes me sad. She deserves so much more than that

Like I said her “act” appears to be an exaggerated version of her worst traits but also what she likes, as she mentions in that she does still love killing games and feels uncomfortable when everyone is happy. So she does fall into a middle ground of not exactly normal but not actually crazy or disturbed like she makes herself out to be. Just a hurt and sad individual that masks it. Someone posted a comic earlier that I think is pretty much how I imagined how Darumi is in front of people and then in her room, I’ll attach it. Funny experience, mine is slightly similar but a bit jumbled. As a teenager me and my friend figured out how to make JP psn accounts and were super hyped getting to try all sorts of Japanese exclusive demos. One of those was Danganronpa but it let you do trial gameplay and it was all in Japanese so I had no idea what the fuck was going on. Still stuck with me though. Fast forward to when the anime is releasing, I watched it an episode or so and it jogged my memory and made me look into it and discovered it was based on a game! And wouldn’t you know it, an English patch had come out by then (I was in highschool, I think 3rd year?). So I played the fan patch on a real psp of Danganronpa 1 before they came out officially here! Loved it so much I ended up pre ordering the official 1 and 2 collectors edition when they did make it over here. A favorite memory of mine is in senior year I kept lending out 2 after it came out and I beat it to my friends so we could talk about it.

She's depressed for one second, then back to her 'normal' in the next but once you get her riled up it's impossible to make her back down. Well I wrote the main AU one I could think of, some alternate route type ones I thought of were like a Retsnom where they never find the books and then Takumi has to deal with his guilt over the other academy being dead and she’s there for him. Hmmhmm, sounds very interesting to me. I really liked Takumi having to face the consequences of his actions (everyone hating him and Nozomi scolding him made me also hang my head in shame while I was playing) and having no fix-all cure to his situation is great. He feels like shit, everything he's trying to protect has gone to shit and now there's a rift between anyone he can't fix because it's too awkward and too much work, but that's where Darumi comes in.

She has an aptitude when it comes to this type of stuff and with how she pep-talked Takumi about Nozomi and got them to make up, I'd want her to do the same with everyone else who was upset at him. Relationships are messy and a lot of work, and it would be fun to see Darumi play secret friendship wingwoman to fix the mood in the SDU without anyone knowing she has anything to do with it. Love seeing Takumi and Darumi work together for the betterment of everyone because it's a shared goal they have.

Ahah the SF offshoot.. I got so excited when Hiruko and Takumi hopped into the Retsnom verse and saw Takumi and Darumi hanging out. Maybe that could've been the start in him recalling past timelines and making an effort to bond with Darumi again and re-experience all those feelings without any of the lingering sadness. But then, Takumi felt very disconnected from the rest of the SDU in that route. Everyone else is having fun and the time of their lives while Takumi and Hiruko are going through the horrors. In this case, Darumi would definitely be offput by Takumi because why only now is he coming in? Can't exactly explain the alternate timeline stuff to her and even she'd think he's got a screw loose

The happy endings of SF didn't really pay off for me just because of how isolated Takumi was from everyone. Usually he's at the center of things and since we're playing from his POV, I care more about the SDU members when I see what they're up to so when we get a happy ending where everything works out but that personal connection isn't there, I didn't feel anything.
