Millenials and the popularity of anime on Western tv sync up just enough that they'll like the shows that are on but hate uniquely Japanese tropes.
The Genki Girl that Amy embodies is nothing like the "model girl" that the West put onto every character (there are exceptions.)
Western cartoons with a girl lead usually had her be the sensible one who could kick ass and told all those boys off for goofing around. An over-correction of attempting to get away from the stigma of the girl needing rescuing or not being as smart in other shows before this. There are exceptions to these but generally speaking.
So they see Amy fawning over Sonic and getting jealous and ... well, acting like a girl does (which is why Amy and Sailor Moon characters are popular within that demographic in Japan), over here it was seen as reductive.

I get the writers wanted to have Shadow get infected at some point in the story, which I totally agree, it's an interesting story plot. Maybe people might have back when it was the latest issue but was drowned out due to Shadow getting turned.
