An over-correction of attempting to get away from the stigma of the girl needing rescuing or not being as smart in other shows before this. There are exceptions to these but generally speaking.
So they see Amy fawning over Sonic and getting jealous and ... well, acting like a girl does (which is why Amy and Sailor Moon characters are popular within that demographic in Japan), over here it was seen as reductive.
